If only it was wood, this is faux wood panelling with an imitation plastic finish on hard board (thin flexible wood panels probably made of sawdust or even paper pulp) Or thin ply at best.
Normally used as a quick and reasonably cheap solution for damp walls and flaking plaster Ian, you have been in my living room so you know it is quite a dark room. Can you imagine what it must of been like with "panelling" like this all across the chimney breast and along the side up to where my stereo is. And this when the bay window at the side would have been about half the height it is now and not a bay window. All it needed was some typically 1970s swirly carpet and three piece suite to complete the picture. I know they had it because, at some point when it was all removed, a former owner tacked it to the walls of the garage and you could see the slot that had been cut in it for the Baxi Bermuda gas fire/central heating boiler.
