I saw a compact washer and dryer listed on Craigs. I was first to call and we just got home.

Locked, Loaded and Agitated

I need to run to the hardware and pick up a quick connect for the water supply. I was too anxious to wait so I filled it with a stock pot and did the first load of mixed colored on the heavy duty cycle.

Run of the Mill Shredmore

It is the same machine as the bottom half of the compact stacked unit, but on wheels. Two speed motor with split agitation speeds on Heavy Duty and Permanent Press cycle. It has Gentle Cycle and an agitated Soak cycle, three water levels and the option for warm or cold rinse. Dual Action Agitator, neutral drain, standard drill and worth $50.00 to me.

Hi Kelly,
Best Of Luck with this nice Kenmore. Many years ago I had a simular model. I didn't have the dual action agitator. They are small but do a good job. Keep us posted.

Kellly, VERY NICE!!! That's a later than 1986 DD portable. I'd call it LK (for portable) feature wise. And I love the hih & low speed agitation for the regular (they had to call it heavy duty) and PP cycles. And a soack cycle too. It's the beez kneez. And pics of the dryer pleez? Happy ya now have a washe & dryer again. Self-cleaning or ercirculating filter? Bob

Those little DD portables are very cute machines, especially with the miniaturized version of the DA agitator. I've seen the Whirlpool version with the Surgilator as well. They are definitely better than the later Sears servo-motor-controlled portables or Whirlpool "World Washers". Once you get the faucet connector, watch how they fill up, it's interesting.

Kelly, Congrats.

That washer was/is what I was looking for last year, but they don't show up too often. I ended up with a MontgomeryWard portable that I found at a used appliance shop. It's a Frigidaire design from about '88. I think Austin said that he had used one while on vacation one time.

The one thing that I changed was the quick disconnect hoses. Mine was like that from a port dishwasher, yours may be the same. It would sometimes come off the faucet while in use. I found a low profile adaptor at Lowes that fit the faucet and has two sets of threads, one for the aerator and one for a standard hose fitting. This allowed me to put a standard washing machine fill hose and a standard size drain hose on the machine. You just unscrew the aerator from the faucet and screw on the hose. It now drains a lot faster since it's a spin/drain design machine. The one thing you have to watch though is the drain hose, since it's no longer attached with the fill hose, it can come flying out of the sink when draining(yeah, it happened). I just tape it down to the counter when I use it.

I still look for one like you found though. Good luck with it!
Bill

How about a Quickie?

I have a quick connect that is attached to the cold water supply and the hot is capped. The temp is controlled with the faucet. I used to let the front loader drain into the toilet but the Kenmore has to have a standpipe height of 34" or more. I have a piece of PVC pipe that will rest on the vanity and hold the drain which will empty into the tub. I heard a story of a portable washer draining into the kitchen sink in a multi level apartment. The backflow came up in the sinks down the stack causing a flood and suds to foam up in the lower units. The bathtub feels safer. The washer was plumbed into normal fixtures before I got it. It sat under a GE wall mount dryer. When it was time to do laundry the washer was pulled out from under the dryer.

Mixed Marriage

The dryer is much older than the washer. I dried the maiden load from the Kenmore which consisted of two pair of jeans, two long sleeved knit shirts, 2 pair of socks, 2 pair of boxers and 4 hand towels. It dried in 40 minutes, was cooled and relatively wrinkle free. It is a treat to have soft laundry again. The combo cooked them and then they needed to be placed on hangers to finish so they had the feel of being line dried.

Haier Today Goon Tomorrow

I have been in a quandry since my Equator quit, trying to find a portable, locally. Nothing, new, is stocked in the metro area so I bought a Haier from a dealer on ebay. The price was 340.00 but included shipping. I was told to expect 20 days for delivery. On Monday, I saw a matched Whirlpool set on Spokane's craiglist for 300.oo that are in Pullman Washington, a 7 hour drive, each way. The next day this set came up in Seattle so I bought them for the interim. There is a newer GE portable dryer on Craigs that matches the look of the Kenmore, but its pretty beat up. The washer stays inside and the dryer is on the deck so matching isn't a priority and this was a one stop shop. The agitator and basket on the Haier remind me of Fisher Paykel and it will be fun to experience something new and different that I have never seen before.

WOW! I used to have a similar washer and matching dryer something like the one shown when I lived in a townhome In Manassas,Va near Wash DC.It was older, belt drive and had a straight blade agitator.I modified a DA agitator and it worked better. That little machine could wash like the bigger brother-but held less. Most of the townhome units in that complex had those-some apartments in the DC area had those too. When I moved from that house I put the orig straight blade agiator back. That washer ran just fine when I moved-figure it was original to that house.Had the matching dryer.-It ran from 220V.the washer was plumbed in like a regular one-no faucet hose or adaptor.

Congrats, Kelly! How fast does it spin? The older belt drive portables hit 1000 rpms, I think.

very convenient

Kelly,

I love those portable washers on wheels. The one piece stack units are pretty heavy and cumbersome. The units like this can be easily moved from a storage area to the use area possibly your kitchen or bathroom.

One place I lived I was remodeling the kitchen, had no sink for a while. But I had my Kenmore portable dishwasher which I used in the bathroom, just washed all the dishes and pots and pans in it. Later, because it was convertible, I installed it in the new kitchen!

Tolivac, I was born and raised in Manassas. When did you live there? I lived in the City of Manassas, and it was mostly Kenmore country, although there were a few Whirlpools and even some Maytags too. Monkey Wards was unpopular and I saw almost no Westinghouse or Frigidaire.

Glad to be out of the generic suburban sprawl,
Dave

Hey, if he's willing to live in the bathroom and do laundry, I'd say he's a keeper, Kelly! Appears to be in great shape; very cute, also.

Kelly, congrats on two dependable pieces of equipment. That dryer is the stack model because the one that sits on the floor has the controls on the slanted area above the door. It has a large capacity so you should get nice wrinkle-free laundry out of it.

The top collar of the tub has all of these diagonal slits and the water from the fill flume sprayed water down onto the tub collar, actually pulling water in during the spin spray rinse so really, the machine fills into the outer tub.

Volvoguy87-I lived in Manassas,Va for about 4 yrs before I retransferred to Greenville NC.I worked in downtown DC.I am trying to remember the street I lived off of-beleive it was Sudly-Rt#235-the main street that goes thru Manassas. The street I lived on was Sudley Manor Road-the townhome complex all the way at the end-there is a waterpark that operated during the summer behind the Townhouse complex. So metimes the traffic going to and from that park was something elese.I also frequented Manassas Vacuum-knew Leu who ran the place. That was a regular stop on my weekends. Also a very good freind and work mate lived in Manassas for a year-he lived in downtown,Manassas.I helped him a lot in remodeling the house he was in.Was kinda fun.I was close to the entrance to Rt#66.The Manassas Mall was only a couple miles from my house. One of those "sniper" shootings was only a mile or two from where I lived-the shooting took place near the Home Depot shopping center that also has a Wal-Mart.I liked the Manassas area.Used to commute on the VRE train from Manassas park or the Downtown Manassas VRE stops.Other shifts-like my mids-used the Veinna, Va Metro subway stop-free overnight parking!
