Thinking of y'all...

The rainy weather cannot dampen our pure, unadulterated hotness...or, for that matter, our fabulously clean laundry...

Jeff...get a pic of everyone standing by their 'stang!

I had mine for 8 days...would be a nice "cruisin" car for the weekend trolling...hehe ;-)

I ran mine with heat full blast when it was cold..I mean, what is the point of having a convertible if you don't use it?

They are gas guzzelers tho, esp when you want to open them up and see how fast they go, which I did *ahem* alot!

Keep the pics coming...wished there was a way to get live feed going, that would be so cool!

Post to fix and update number of responses in thread index..

Had a BLAST at Ross's last night, and burned up 2 30-minute mini DVD-Rs. Took quite a few pictures as well, but my 5-year-old Sony won't work with Vista and I'll have to find a card reader to post pics. The Thor is an incredible machine (that has pretty good water extraction), and so is the new 1-18 Ross found. It's in fantastic shape, with the rare control panel.

The festivities at Roger's house have been moved to today, and it's fabulous outside which is great. Let's hope it stays that way! We have some new surprises that we will be working on as well. YAY for good old-fashioned fix-ins!

Hopefully the guys that found them will reveal what they are :)

Great pictures, I wish I was there. I hope soon to be able to get to at least a local one on the east coast. Working on making some job changes again.

Austin, I worked on my first Vista machine last week. I like it but opted not to get it on my new PC. I will upgrade maybe in the fall. By then I can be sure all my custom applications and all the equipment I have connected to my PC has the right drivers and software upgrades so it will run.

Can't wait to see everyones pictures and videos.

Wow! You guys look like you are having a great time. I really like the Hoover twin tub with the auto rinse feature. That was very big for the Hoover Company when they introduced the one piece molded plastic tubs. Those were done right up the street from me! Beautiful old vacs too. I really liked the amount of old Hoover cleaners that I see. Thanks Jeff for posting the pictures. I for one don't care about any surprise...the pictures speak for themselves!

Home safe and sound

We're home now after another day at the mercy of American Airlines. Today's drama was getting to the airport in Tucson and learning I had a seat, but Michael had been cancelled!
In any case, the snafu was quickly fixed, and we had a nice, if a bit bumpy, non-stop flight home.
It was an awesome weekend! So many friends, new and old, gathered in one place to celebrate this amazing hobby.

To Ross, Roger and Nate:
You guys are amazing, thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all you three did this weekend! From the open homes to the wonderful machines to the great food to the warm welcomes, you three are amazing hosts!
Roger I am serious when I say too that I have never seen so many absolutely pristine Convertibles too!
Michael said he would put his own post up later, so I will let him speak for himself, however I know I am safe in saying he had as much fun as I did!
It was a fun, exciting, action filled weekend, I am pretty wiped out tonight, but wanted to say thanks to all.
I can't wait for next year!

I’m sitting in the airport just exhausted and my flight home to Minnie is right on time with no drama to report, I had absolutely no problem getting down here on Thursday as well, my flight was 10 minutes early. I guess I’m just drama free.

Anyway I just wanted to give Roger, Nate and Ross a big huge thank you! You guys were so nice to organize and have a wash-in for us. Your machines are all beautiful and the company was wonderful! It was so nice to see everyone again and to meet some new friends as well. I will definitely make the trek again another time.

A big Three-Ring Agitator hug to all you guys.

friends

First....Jeff, thank you for inviting me to go with you to this wash in. You are a wonderful man!!! Our travel was NOT pleasant to say the least and yet.....it was still enjoyable because of you!!

To Ross, Roger, Nate......THANK YOU!!!! I know that it is a lot of work opening your home to a group of people and I appreciate ALL that you did to prepare for it.

I met some very interesting people, people that made me laugh my A-- off!!! Rodney you are HYSTERICAL!! It was also nice to see people that I have previously met. Everyone is SO nice.
I also want to thank everyone who excepted me....I am an outsider but I enjoyed myself very much. I learned a lot this weekend. As I don't collect Vaccums or Washer and Dryers myself, I find it very interesting and I can see why you guys do it. After seeing the unimatic and the 1 18....i WANT ONE!!...(insert joke here)....

One last thank you to Terry.....YOU MAKE G R E A T COFFEE!! And it was really nice of you to make sure that everyone was eating and drinking and having a good time. You are the hostess with the mostest!!!

Greg........I'll be waiting for my Dual 50 !!! LOL...THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

Take care guys!! (and gal...Venus)

Finally home...

After going through two airports, a bumpy ride on a CRJ200 (the Corolla of airliners, no joke), and one FANTASTIC fun-filled weekend. Ross, Roger, Nate, and Nate & Melissa, I can't thank you all enough for inviting us into your homes and letting us play with your machines. Everything turned out perfectly, and the best part was that after Friday it stayed nice and enjoyable all weekend...the back of my neck shows it too, LOL! It was especially great seeing everyone again, and meeting new faces as well!

Now that most of you who attended found out about the little shipping disaster, I can say that the "surprise" was going to be one of the first Dyson DC21 canisters to hit the US market, serial number 36. I ordered it Wednesday and had it shipped UPS Next Day Air so we could play with it. It made it all the way to Tucson without any trouble, and then on the truck to Roger's house, something apparently fell on it and it was damaged. Greeeaaaaat, but worse things happen. I was mad, but UPS will be giving me a refund in full, and I'll just get another one. At least it was damaged and no one took it. That would have been worse. But there were still many fun machines to play with...namely the Hoover Convertible 65 and 67, Model 27, 28, 305, Eureka widetrack ESP self-propelled, Kirby 518, Eureka upright with the "touch-power" grip, and the most interesting of all, the Cordaway "canned ham" canister with the Vibra-Beat nozzle! I had never seen one of those before, so it was very interesting (and ineffective). It made an otherwise quiet machine put out one hell of a racket!

Thanks to Roger, I now have 4 excellent new additions to my vacuum collection. A Hoover model 634 (rare promotional version of the 63 in turquoise), 334 (the first lightweight commercial Convertible), 62 (unlike others, this one has chrome lettering on the hood), and a dual-voltage UK Powerplus. I also grabbed an older two-tone Quadraflex Powermatic nozzle, for experimentation with otherwise straight-suction machines. Now I just need to get another adapter cord for it!

I will hopefully be posting pictures and giving a more detailed synopsis of the washer-related festivities shortly. Right now I'm beat, and it's back to the daily routine starting tomorrow.

--Austin

Someone made a post earlier about how they were glad to be accepted within the group. In my opinion, that's what Applianceville is all about!!! No one is (or should be in ANY club for that matter; of course I'm using the term "club" very loosely) considered an "outsider", made to feel unwelcome, or looked down upon because they were either new, a significant other of someone attending that hadn't previously met anyone, or didn't yet have a collection. Everyone is treated equally. That's the beauty of cameraderie, and why I enjoy events like these. The machines are fun, but without the great people and the positive energy, it would just be like watching your own machines in your laundry room...pretty dull and boring if you ask me.

In Tucson, everyone talked to (and got along with) each other, not just any particular person or group. There were no "cliques". No one bragged about what machines they had in their collection that most others didn't have. No one argued over which vacuums they wanted from Roger's "to go" stash. No one was so head-over-heels for a particular brand or type of machine that they attacked anyone who disagreed with its design or performance or who didn't really care for the action it had. Speaking of that, not ONE negative comment was made...it was ALL positive the whole time. Last year, this was the best weekend of my life, and I have to say this year was even better. We tinkered with machines, talked for hours, enjoyed delicious meals, and of course washed and washed and washed. MUCH knowledge was shared, and many questions were answered. Like other events, I learned quite a bit of information from this one as well. It was great.

I hope to have the many pictures I took up later today on Imperial, so everyone can see. And I'm now in the process of sorting through the DVDs, and after I watch all of them, I will start on the music video :)

Hi all - just made it back to the "Big O" a while ago. Not a hitch, everything went just perfectly - just like on the way out last Wednesday. I had an earlier flight out of Omaha to Minneapolis so I took the Lightrail downtown and met Don (jetaction) for dinner and then we rode the train back to the airport for the flight down to Tucson. Everyone had a great time even with a little chilly rain, but the weather turned out perfectly and it was so fun seeing everyone and meeting so many new faces. I forgot my camera but the pictures so far have been really great - thanks everyone for posting them!

Just to clear my name I have never sent You any nasty emails at all, I'm not that kind of Guy. You for one have no business saying that on this forum, You are the one airing dirty laundry not me, I have never aired anything here at this site about anything outside of here. Yes I did sent You some emails but never nasty ones. Tom the only thing I asked You and I have asked You nicely that from now on don't make any negative comments about what I say that's all I have asked. I have never brought up the past because I live for the future not the past. So let's make a deal here I don't and won't respond to any of your comments and You do the same for me.

Thanks Skip...

agreed

Skip you and one other have been lurking about the Tucson threads just waiting for something to happen, like the "surprise" was supposed to hurt someone, or cause some sort of reaction that would have ruined the events in Tucson.
Maybe its time you just let it go. What you were hoping would happen did not, so leave it go.
I've already called Tom and told him to drop it, now YOU do the same.
Enough is enough.

Skip...agreed...I will more than happily leave you be...it was not an attack upon you at all. Like I said I do not know you! I only know you from some emails...(and they were bad!). I am more than happy to let anything go. I am a very reasonable person. If you wish and you can be nice about it...email me and maybe we can work this "problem" out over private email. I will take you off of my blocked list. I would even be more than happy to email you my phone number and get to know you and find out what has you so angry. I do appologize for my outburst. I just felt that I needed to defend myself. So lets have some cake and enjoy this thread. I have really enjoyed reading it until today!

Just a quick post to thank all of our gracious and generous hosts for everything they did to make us feel welcomed. I'm sure that to have such an event run so smoothly there was tons of behind-the-scenes work involved.

The memories, the bonds, the comraderie, the laughs and the love were tangible and could be sliced with a knife. I know that this event will stay with me for decades. There simply is nothing else quite like it.

Attached is a self-pic of some of the goodies that came home with me. For those responsible, consider yourselves hugged.

Will post more later! I have made my (very late) 2007 new-years-resolution to stay more in touch and be thankful for such good people in my life and around me.

Thanks Venus!

I'm not doing too well tonight, that scratchy voice you heard Sunday morning has gotten worse, and now includes a cough and a fever.
I think its all finally caught up with me and I am down for the count tonight.
My mood is less than pleasant, and I have zero tolerance for BS.

I'll pass your message on to Michael when I talk to him later. We both enjoyed meeting you very much, I just wish we'd had more time to visit!
I guess there will be next year!

Chad, I am sorry you could not make it, I hope it all gets better soon. I look forward to meeting you one of these days!

Oh my goodness!!! Never again will I miss a wash-in if I can help it. This was my (and my partner Tony's) first wash-in ever and it was amazing. I don't think I have ever met a nicer group of folks. FYI...I'm the washer lover here, but Tony having no interest in appliances still had so much fun. It was all that awesome company!

Thanks so much to Ross, Roger, and Nate and friends for putting together this event. Your open invitation to us has truely changed me and has deeply stengthened my love for vintage appliances. I will always be thankful for that. I feel like I have so many new friends now too. My door will always be open to you as well.

I would post some pictures I took, but I think I left my camera on the porch swing at Nate's house so unfortunately I don't have them. Hopefully I'll retrieve them soon though.

Thanks again for a life-changing experience. I love you all!

Wow guys - it sure looks like you all had a blast over the weekend. Thanks to everyone for posting pictures - even though pictures can only tell the tale so many frames at a time - it is enough for those of us who weren't able to make it feel right at home in those backyards. Terry - are you ever NOT doing dishes when you visit someone? If you come to Iowa, I am not going let you anywhere near the spin tube Frigidaire!

So glad to see that everyone had fun, and as always, the machines looked like they were so much fun. I'm glad to see everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend - less Jeff coming up with a cold. And Steve - please tell me you traveled back home in your getup? ;-)

Launderess -- Yes, the Ecolab detergent made it, and you are fabulous. Thank you so much!!! Please let me know if there is ever anything I may send you!

Jon -- Got the camera safe and sound :-) We'll coordinate so I can get it back to you.

To everyone -- I don't know what to say. Thank you for an amazing time, comprised wholly and entirely of you.

Thank you for your kindness, your wonderful personalities, your energy, and your exuberance.

Thank you for taking three average days in March and turning them into something we won't forget.

I could be tired, or disappointed now that everyone has left, but all I can think of is the fact that I'm so privileged to know all of you--to be a part of this community--to be a part of something so fantastic.

Yes, it's a lot of fun on the surface, but really, when you think about it, how many people go through life and can say that they've done or experienced anything like this?

You all have my sincere thanks, and equally sincere hope that we'll see each other again very soon--here, there, anywhere. :-)

--Nate

Finished uploading the pictures I took to my album, which I posted in Imperial. I still can't believe how fast this weekend flew by.

Ross's Thor was a very interesting machine. Due to the clothes-guard bars at the top, the tub was quite small, but still held a decent amount. The agitator stroke was more of a "dragging" type (a few believed it wasn't going as fast as it should), but it had good action. When it goes into spin, stand back! Water flies EVERYWHERE, and will soak whoever is standing in front of it! The same goes with a spray rinse while the cover is off!

The bolt-down Kenmore is another great one. Since it's early, the agitator stroke is considerably faster than the later models, and it is quite splashy! Of course the wash action is very effective as well. No 'drip-coffee' neutral drain either like the others...the strong pump makes short work of the water!

Of course the Blackstone is always fun. The agitator is very deceiving as the vanes appear small...but the action is great! When loaded with non-bulky items, it has great turnover. One thing I did not realize was that the Autotrol CAN be advanced manually through each step of the cycle like any other machine...neutral drain, spin, agitation, you name it! And if the water pressure drops, all you have to do is unplug it during fill until the desired level is reached! Another one on my "dream list".

The Bendix PowerSurge is TRES awesome, as well as watching Greg and Robert work on it. Very fascinating...of course last year I looked at it but we never took it apart! What an interesting design, and it worked after the cord was changed, on both nutation and spin! Unfortunately due to a problem with one of the boots (and further disassembly to adapt a different sized part), it wasn't able to be used, but at least we were able to see it run!

After the PowerSurge was reassembled and moved out, the beautiful 1955 Frigidaire WV-65 Unimatic that Steven (Wigwag) had was brought out front and center. It ran beautifully, but had a fan rattle and a small water leak. Robert determined that it was coming from the top seal, which was promptly replaced. At first, it was filling rather erratically, spraying into the tub rather than the cascade that these early Frigidaires are known for. Taking off the back panel, it was discovered that the fill hose was shoved down into the flume, presumably due to excess splashing. Robert corrected that problem and it was filling beautifully again. A good-sized load of towels was done to show how much the tub could really hold, and it still turned over constantly!

The avocado Kenmore 900 was definitely a favorite on many levels. The flow-thru detergent dispenser, Vari-Flex agitator, and selective dialing were fun, but it was also THE quietest Kenmore I have ever heard. During agitation, it was nearly silent, and more than once I asked "Is it running?"

The 80's Hoover Deluxe twin-tub was brought out early on, and we saw the adjustable fill flume as well as the interesting plastic spin basket. The impeller was turned on with a low water level and did a little splash dance for us. After the wash tub was filled up, towels were added. 2 bath towels turned over fine, but 3 brought it almost to a standstill. The auto-rinse was very interesting. I then grabbed the dolly and headed to the carport for the Bradford twinnie, made by Panasonic. While it doesn't auto rinse, it is much different (and better in some ways) than the Hoover. The small appearance is quite deceiving! The reversing impeller is on the bottom of the tub, but set at a slight angle, which provides better action. It can wash 3 bath towels with ease. What's most interesting about it, though, is the snorkel tube in the washtub, hidden behind a filter, for overflow rinse capabilities. When the diverter valve is set to "rinse", the drain pump comes on (it has 3 motors!) and pumps the water out through the tube. You can overflow for as long as you want, and do either a static Kelvinator-style overflow or overflow and impellerate at the same time! Very flexible. Since it has a separate drain pump, the spinner was much quieter than the Hoover, although I didn't get to see how it compared to extraction. It appeared to be the same speed, though.

After a delicious meal of many varieties of pasta, the dinner dishes were run in Nate's GE vertical spin-tube dishwasher. What a cool machine that was, and effective too. All that was left after 1 cycle and no pre-rinsing were a few tiny specks on one plate.

Sunday, we had a great breakfast of waffles, bacon, eggs, and sausage. A load of jeans was ran in the '63 potato-pulley Laundromat, and the White-Westy TL was brought outside as well to play with. The machine I really enjoyed this time, though, was the Norge. I had only had limited experience with one before then, and I have to say, it is one hell of a machine...loud, aggressive, splashy, and VERY fun to watch. I stuck my hand down at the bottom of the tub to feel the action of the TurboSweep agitator on high speed, and the currents were so strong it felt very much like a Frigidaire by the vanes. With a medium-sized load, the turnover was impressive, and the burpalator filter added more drama. Now I want one!

To all of the gracious hosts and people who attended, thank you for a FUN, exciting weekend. I'm ready to go back!

Austin

Bob, I am so GLAD you beat the odds for once on the way home! Jeff, I hope you feel better soon! I've know so many people including yours truly that has been down with that in the last month or so.

Thanks everyone for the great pictures and Austin for your great play by play, and to our hosts for making this wonderful event possible.

I know a few other people were staying til Monday, but I kind of lost track of a number of people after leaving to take Allen to the airport Sunday afternoon, so if I didn't get a chance to say goodbye or talk to you, it was great fun and I look forward to seeing you again soon!

You guys looked like you had so much fun. I know that "high" feeling of wash-ins and I miss it greatly! Thanks for all the great pictures. I would love to know who all of the people are. I know a couple of you but without knowing who is who, it just is a bunch of pictures of people! Perhaps you could use their "site names" since "Dave", "Jim", "Bob" mean nothing if we don't have a way of connecting them to who we correspond with on this site.

It sounds like some great frienships have begun. YAY!! I've made some of my most treasured frienships through this site and wash-ins!!

disappearing pants

Now Terry, you'd be the last person I'd ever expect to lose his pants! It was fun to see you work the room with "Has anyone seen my pants?"

I'll agree with the other too, I was talking to Steve Toggle on my way to work this morning, and the comment was made that we wished it was last week so we could do it again!
It was all over much too fast!

Thank you!!

I have to say what a great time I had at the wash-in!! It was a remarkable weekend. I admit I was a bit apprehensive at coming since I don't have the collections or knowledge of many of the great memebers here. However all my fears were quickly put to rest when I arrived. EVERYONE was so nice, willing to share information - and so much of it. I felt very welcome and learned a lot. I fear I might have really caught the bug to start a collection. Best wishes to everyone and again thank you to our gracious hosts for the hospitality, great food and great conversation.

Thanks again and I'm glad everyone made it home safely. I look forward to seeing everyone again at another wash-in. Who's knows, with a little luck, I might find my pink GE Mobile Maid by then and bring it along for show and tell!!

Best wishes
Scott Wilson aka phxbear

Thanks Nate for the great step by step driving directions, cooking us breakfast, sharing your machines and letting us drag the Frigidaire out of the shed. My favorite was the Norge.

Thanks Roger for sharing your home, the food, the drinks, and letting us play with your collection. My favorites were the 1970 Kenmore and the Blackstone.

Jeff & Michael you guys are such a cute couple that it’s sickening (In a good way). Would you please e-mail me instructions like you did Steve so I can post my pictures?

Terry thanks for all of the behind the scenes work. You made sure everyone was fed & happy. I felt so bad for you when you lost your shorts. I’m so glad they turned up in a logical and respectable place.

Steve Toggle you are truly a gentleman and a scholar. It was wonderful to meet you and Gary. Thanks for keeping us all in stitches.

Thanks Greg for the Maytag cloth souvenir and inviting me to go to the Meile showroom with you guys and thanks Scott for driving us.

Al you’re and ocean of information; you knew more about the Meiles than the sales lady.

Thanks Austin for taking the lead and filming the DVDs of the washin and for being so thoughtful and planning the surprise.

Venus it was great to see you again. Thanks for the detergent. You always have many nice things to say and you’re the most supportive and patient mom I know. And you can eat and eat, but never gain an ounce.

Mike I enjoyed hearing about your stories of fixing appliances for Sears. Thanks for sharing your wealth of information about washers.

Steven it was fantastic to meet you. Thanks for bringing your machines, and good luck with the 1970 Kenmore.

Bob it’s always a treat to get to see you.

Robert thanks for the site and your words of encouragement about getting the top down on the rental. I did finally get it. Who would have thought that one had to have his foot on the brake to put a top down? Modern equipment…Give me the vintage stuff any day.

Scott W., Steve R., and Rich it was nice to meet you. I always enjoy reading your posts.

Jamie you remind me of myself at your age in the way that you just couldn’t keep your hands off the agitators. Good to meet you and Alex. I wish you all the luck with your long distance relationship.

Jon it was excellent meeting you and Tony. I’m glad Tony had a good time. That was sweet of him to come out and support you. Good luck with your Kenmore Elite Appliances.

Glenn, Jason, David, Carol, and Steve 1 – 18 we missed you, but there’s always next time.

A special thank you to Ross for not only sharing his home, food, hospitality, and machines; but also for letting Mike, Steven, and I come back Sunday night after it was all over and do it one more time!

Thanks again,
Jeff

But my credibility, alas, has been taken down yet another notch. There is a picture of me (and as we all know it's ALL about me. *LOL*) in 029 doing something I said I don't do. I am firm in my resolve that the OTHER thing I declared I don't do will remain that way. *LOL* What can I say; Ross invited me to do it and I could not resist him.

Mike in PA: The McMansion is actually a lovely house on the way to the Church of the Holy Cross that is on higher ground. (Yes I walked in and the earth did not shake nor did lightning stike! *LOL* Actually, I lit a candle for those who had and or have cancer.) Aa far as the sculptures go, there was a store in an outdoor mall in Sedona, AZ. If you look closely, methinks Gary is posing by a gas meter near the side of a buidlng. There may be a store name on a plaque there. Will research.

Mike in UK: Strike a pose...I am actually left handed, which they say makes one a cunning linguist. There is a disproportionate number of comics who are left-handed. A starcher-presser type? The Celebrations of The Ages

I enjoyed being quiet and surveying the crowd at the Wash-in. The most senior members were glad to rekindle the shared experiences with the alumni of Washing, the newbies like myself were slack jawed at the quick trip back to adololescent washers of our past and the young ones were testing the tolerences of the various machines making sudscake, testing the rollover quotient and filled with the exuberence of youth, leaping from load to load.
It is an expensive and arduous undertaking by Roger, Ross, Terry and Nate. I was given three distinctly different and equally wonderful insights into the archives of washing.
Tucson did not fail to impress us all with it's display of grandeur, wind, torrential rain, hail, thunder and blistering sun.
I am back and ready to learn the "rest of the story". I am grateful to everyone who shared memeories to bank in the archives of life.

Love cures people...the ones who give it and the one who receives it. There was an abundance of love in Tucson.

Kelly

Steve,

If I missed this in another post I apologize for asking again but what kind of dishwasher is that in one of your photos? It is the one with the clear panel so we can see it wash. It looks like it has a stationary tube that goes up the entire middle of the dishwasher.

I don't think I have ever seen one like that. From the photo it looks like the racks have huge cut outs for this monster "wash tube".

This GE plastic tub thingie was intended to be retrofitted to be like a Frigidaire spin-tube DW, with a horizontal wash tube in the center between the racks. Logistically, that did not work out. So, ultimely it became a horizontal spin-tube Youngstown-ish machine.

You go Nate!

Do I forsee a career for you as a mechanical engineer?

Post# 200797 , Reply# 136   4/2/2007 at 10:36 (6,255 days old) by hoover1060 ()
that DW was cool

Nate's DW was awesome, and the first time I've ever seen a DW run thru a clear plexi-glass front. It seemed to wash pretty well, and I loved the little thingy on top that Nate gave a spin to, helping to get things started.

Oops, sorry for wandering off :-) I'll have to post a vid of the FrankenGE spin-tube. :-) Scott from Phx made a good one.

It's a BOL Perma-Tuf GE dishwasher that's had all the wash mechanics removed, except for the bottom wash-arm support.

Onto that, we built a vertical spray tower a-la Youngstown Kitchens, and drilled a helix of spray holes.

After reaming the inside of that tube with a piece of KitchenAid metal trim (good stuff, I tell you) to rid it of PVC yiblets that would otherwise recirculate and plug the holes in the filterless GE, we attached metal deflectors at about silverware-basket level. The deflectors are angled so that the tube receives some accelerating "oomph" from them, to help it spin, since controlling the directionality of the spray holes in PVC is kind of tough.

This design worked well, but tended to transfer food particles from the fronts of the dishes to the back in the top rack, so we added a constant rinse made from a screw, nylon nut, nylon washer, and a formed sheet-metal wash arm. This resolved the food crud issue, and made the machine quite functional in terms of washability.

The current sticking-points (aside from a lack of a door, because it was in the way...and thus, no mechanical detergent dispenser) really revolve around crappy racking (a circular design would really help, since everything must face the center) and the fact that the top-bearing for the spray tower (really, just a lag bolt and a flat washer) tends to stick, thus frequently necessitating the gentle nudge at the beginning of the cycle to set the spin-tube a'spinning.

I'm hoping to start work on a new design that incorporates Frigidaire's horizontal spin-tube, as it gives you vastly more flexible racking, but I still need to research a way to get a good, relatively frictionless bearing going for a horizontal tube that still seals well so that the water being funneled into it doesn't just spray out the fitting that connects it.

R&D is on it. :-)

But no, no patents or big surprises here. As Robert noted, the Youngstown Kitchens rates pretty low on washability, and so does the infamous plastic spin-tube...

That Franken-GE was too cool, but the best part was that it actually worked! After the main dinner load was done, there were only a few tiny specks on one plate, and that was it. No pre-rinsing either!

hey!

Don't be dissin' GE dishwashers, boi!!!! *LOL*

I have a MOL GE (en plastique) in the basment kitchen; bought it because it was a scratch-and-dent for $75. Loved to hate that machine, but guess what? Being that it is a water-hog, it is fast and good. No pre-rinsing.

My fancy, expensive KitcheAid with a SS interior (by Whirlpool (talltub model)) can't wash a dish for beans.

Ou est la justice en la vie?

I like any GE that's the Potscrubber III or newer, and with the corresponding multi-orbit arm. The old big-hole wash arm with simple tower and no constant rinse sucks.

And just think, Togs, you can write KitchenAid now and tell them that a couple o' boys in AZ with a drill and some PVC just out-engineered their tall-tub :-)

Tucson 2007.....the infamous sheet

We actually had prepared test swatches (white cotton sheets, with ketchup, mustard, red wine, turmeric, coffee, chocolate, and soy sauce) that people could play with to choose their detergent and machine combination to defeat the stains.

Unfortunately, we forgot to set them out, but Greg, Bob, Roger, Don, Terry, Scott, and Nate rose to the challenge to wash the (then five-day old--ew!) swatches.

In particular, we had a sheet for Toggleswitch that we had used while icing doughnuts with a turkey baster. Gosh, that one was a mess!

The FrigiKnot!

Loading all those dishtowel-sized white swatches in with the black sheet produced marginal results, even with the Live Water action. Between the fugitive dyes from the black sheet and the yellow of the turmeric and mustard, the Frigidaire produced results that would have pissed off Miss Joy Weis.

As a bonus, it tied the whole thing into a giant rope. We could have, if the swatches had been clean, gone straight to the dryer with it.

The white swatches are re-washed in the Blackstone, with a little chlorine bleach to help rid the yellowness.

Austin - that model 66 was Terry's, we were getting ready to go to FedEx - you can't see my "pile" of vacuums & parts on the other side of the patio. Terry had two or three boxes and I had seven! Save me a bed in the booby-hatch, Rosie, I'm coming!

Cleaning Up in Tucson

I was looking at the sweet and innocent side of the wash-in and reflecting on Tucson, such a short time ago.

Something to Ponder

It does seem to me that Bobload arrived late and was unusually "mum". Could it be there is more to a "Bobload" than we all thought?

I've been very busy lately and can hardly keep up with the interesting threads on this site. I'm glad I found the time now to watch the pictures and read the comments. What a wonderful event and what beautiful pictures. Thank you all for sharing. Tucson is so far away from here, but you really made it a bit closer with sharing the pictures. Yay for wash-ins!

Mmmm...donuts!

So all of that white flaky mess on the black sheet came from just 3 people decorating? Somehow I find that hard to believe and that there were MANY more involved...LOL. David, your Bob-load comment had me ROARING! I guess with the sheer volume, it could be considered a 'Bob-load' in these circumstances.

On a more serious note, it's interesting how the Unimatic which cleans amazingly under normal circumstances (only machine that could remove those strange dark spots I had on my shirts a while back), loses its effectiveness immediately after the load becomes tangled. I'm assuming the sheet(s) were loaded correctly? I still think it's strange because I've done sheets all the time in my machine without any problem, and they come clean. Well, at least I *think* they come clean. Then again, I've never dealt with the 'donut icing' problem either, ha!

Maybe you guys would have had better luck with the Unimatic by pre-treating with

this
?

Austin

Is this what you guys do when I'm not watching???

The lessons to be learned are:

If you're going to be loose with the icing in your baster, don't own black sheets.

Frigidaire jet action can tangle a sheet faster than the characters in a blue movie! The aggressive shredding of a Kenmore is much more acceptable! ;-)

I've been far too "spent" the last several days to muster up the strength to get to check this out. Now I must crawl back between the sheets, no more energy. And see, I began the tangled web I weave all the way back to 1947. I sure looked good back in 1950 didn't I. And considering my age now 50+ years, I look down right hot! lol

Nope, you guys are exactly right. Early Frigidaire washers were the worst, terrible machines. I think each and every one of you should simply get rid of that machine and give it to me. No need to keep such a horror, so I will be more than glad to take it off your hands. I'll make a deal with you, for every early Frigidaire that arrives I will trade you a refurbished direct drive Whirlpool or Kenmore, I think that would be more than fair and everyone would get exactly what they deserve.

You're not getting 'em! I just spent the morning working on the 57 Control Tower (perfectly level) and the timer of the '49... Next is the water valve and a new cord for the 49 and then it's washday, it's piled up to the dusty rafters!

Post# 203447 , Reply# 199   4/12/2007 at 16:58 (6,245 days old) by roto204 (Tucson, AZ)
A direct-drive Kenmore?

roto204's profile picture
Roger and I were commenting how, after using the Unimatic, everything else just kind of, well, pales in comparison.

And as for THAT model, Greg...

Post# 203448 , Reply# 200   4/12/2007 at 17:06 (6,245 days old) by westytoploader ()

That's a belt-drive in Greg's picture...at least it's not a total loss as I would take that one over a DD! I saw that exact model on eBay a while back, around the time I bought my 1981 24-incher, which thankfully is a few models above that one!

Nate, I know what the problem is...why your links in the other thread didn't work and why the GIF here isn't displaying. While Robert fixed the glitch with quotes in the subject drift header, the message body itself still doesn't like them when it comes to inserting HTML links or images in the text. Just remove the quotes from your img src or a href tags and it should work fine...it did for me all the times I've done this.

Post# 203449 , Reply# 201   4/12/2007 at 17:08 (6,245 days old) by westytoploader ()
YAY

And that pushes this thread beyond 200 responses. We have to let this live a while longer, at least until we can all save this on our hard drive before it gets "hard deleted" with the rest of 'em.

Now if it ends up getting "soft deleted" by Robert, that's our own doing, tee hee ;-)

Interesting

roto204's profile picture
The pics and stuff appear here fine...maybe the problem's been fixed? I've tried it on a few different computers.

I did notice the glitch a few weeks ago, but I think it's been resolved since.

And yes, I 'd probably go for that belt-drive, too, to be honest. The straight-vanes were pretty good agitators...
