On your new find.

What is the dial on the upper right hand corner of the backsplash?

Good luck doing your laundry the 'Maytag' way.

upper right dial

Gary that dial is for rinse temperature, either warm or cold rinse.
That looks very similar to the first Maytag my mom had, replaced in 1977 by an A608/DE608 set. I still have the control panel from that old Maytag!

Post# 208933 , Reply# 8   5/8/2007 at 09:12 (6,198 days old) by geoffdelp (SAUK RAPIDS)

Jeff is right; that is the rinse selector. If you leave it on "automatic", you will receive a warm rinse for both the hot and warm washes; cold for the cold wash.

And, of course, Good Housekeeping recommended a cold water rinse for all of the "new" fabrics that were "wash and wear"!

On the 900/900S, the dial was for Save/Drain suds. Unique!!

Here she is paired up with my Model N2LP.

This automatic was made in February 1964 and my Model N2LP was made in January 1963.

I also received the N2LP in brand new, never used condition.

They now have 4 coats of wax on them; two were hand buffed, two were machine buffed.

It will be fun to have them together in the laundry room!

Ben ... I have "lightly" tried to remove that pesky sales sticker; it's going to be a stinker to get off! I want to preserve it; it may not be possible. I'm still working on that!

Here's a good interior shot of that "new agitator smell"!!

Great looking machine Geoff! You have it looking minty fresh out of the box. Sure looks much better than the original photos did. Glad to see that the tape on the front of the cabinet came off without damage to the paint. I thought this cabinet would require refinishing.

Congrats!

Thanks, guys!

Don't be jealous; you'll all be sharing in the "fun" with the maiden wash! It will have to wait, however, until mid-June or so as I am reorganizing and changing my laundry room around a bit to accomodate this beauty!

I have waited a long time to find a machine like this; I couldn't pass up the opportunity when it came around.

In the fall of 1964, I was a 1/2 day Kindergartner! My Mom's original Maytag from the 1950's (sorry; can't figure out what model) gave up the ghost and my parents purchased a brand new Model A502S that fall. So, this machine "fits" in the era (actually, it's nicer than what Mom's "Super Highlander" was).

My Grandma B. (Mom's Mom) had a Model N just like the one I have (probably from the late 1950's).

So, naturally, I'm thinking of calling these Mom and Mama B.

Not sure what Mom will think ... she already thinks my collection is ... well ... "unique"!

Geoff----

The photo of both the automatic and the wringer together is great! Classic Maytag! Congratulations!

The best thing to get that sticker off with is a really wide razor-blade like you can get from the paint department at Lowes or HD.
And be ready, when you peel it off it will want to roll up.
A brand-new blade will peel that sticker off like 'buttah! Just have something handy to mount the sticker on so you will have it to frame.

Post# 209016 , Reply# 26   5/8/2007 at 17:04 (6,197 days old) by geoffdelp (SAUK RAPIDS)

Thanks for the advice, Steve; it's well taken! I have a package of those really wide razor blades used in painting; I will try it out! I really don't want to wreck it and I will have a sheet of legal-sized paper standing by.

The automatic and wringer are CLASSIC Maytag; aren't they? I think they go so well together; can't wait to get them downstairs to see.

I LOVE their styling. Very clean looking. :-)

Post# 209020 , Reply# 27   5/8/2007 at 17:23 (6,197 days old) by volvoguy87 (Cincinnati, OH)
The Sticker:

volvoguy87's profile picture
To best preserve the sticker, have some acid-free/lignin-free paper handy to put it on. That way, the acid in the paper won't eat the sticker or its printing over time. If you frame it, use UV filtering glass to protect it from fading too. It truely is the little things that make all the difference.

This is a dream machine of mine, so care for it well and enjoy,
Dave

Please tell me the "S" means suds-return and that the beautiful tubulation Jon refers to is that coil of hoses next to the machine..

If so, this is a high speed Maytag pump we're talking about which you know only too well from your Model XXX's etc. What fun you'll have with that.

Good luck, Buddy. What a great day?

Are the wringers showing any jealousy or are they welcoming their new sibling with open tubs?

What an AMAZING FIND!!! That machine is incredible!!

My parents had a Maytag similar to this one (almost EXACTLY the same) but was PINK and (from what I can remember) only had two buttons for the speed control to the left of the dial. Is that possible and does anyone know what model that would have been???

THANKS!!

Hi Everyone ...

WOW ... your responses are great; thank you! :-)

Yes; this is a suds saver model. The buttons to the left are ... "Gentle Action, Regular Action, Save Suds, Drain Suds". The next set of buttons are "Cold, Warm, Hot" and then "Low, Medium, Full".

The hoses you see next to the pallet were in the tub; the drain and suds saver hoses. Incredible; they are totally pliable and BRAND NEW from 1964! The bleach measuring cup and some Maytag info were also in the tub. I have some photos I can post.

Dave ... this has been a dream machine of mine, too! Trust me, I will take excellent care of it. It should have a good life with me. :-)

Eugene ... Good heavens! Did you get your 30th high school reunion info yet? Mine came a couple of weeks ago; it will be in late June. I'm going; reluctantly!

Mike ... The wringers welcomed her with open arms! :-) Actually, they (wringers) will all be getting a break after this one is installed. I plan to detail each wringer washer out; complete with new gaskets. We're starting to get a few oil dribbles and need a little Rustoleum on the right angle drives. I want to get all of this done this summer while parts (gaskets and hoses) are still available from Maytag.

Alr2093 ... only one that I know of! I would have snagged up the second, too, if it were there!! :-) I was kind of hoping for the matching dryer; no mention of it being there. This lady was a really "die-hard" wringer washer user.

Peter ... isn't that rinse switch, cool?

Kevin ... sounds like your folks had the A700, no "S" for suds saver and yes, there would have been only 2 buttons for the speed.

Brian ... thank you; I'll try that, too! I use the hair dryer on the decal from the car dealership when I get a new car. I tell them not to put it on (not into free advertising for them) but they do it anyway ... every time! Hair dryer works great on that; should work on this, too.

Austin ... No maiden load until mid June. I'm doing some changes to my laundry room to accomodate this machine and YES; I'm keeping my double tubs!! :-)

Greg ... has that new agitator smell!! :-) Actually, I can't WAIT to run HOT WATER and some Tide through her; there's a "musty-ness" from being in a basement, unused, for 43 years. Something that a little Tide and some Hi-Lex could easily remedy. I bought a new polypropylene agitator to use in her when I use chemicals; bleach, over time, was very hard on the bakelite. I try not to bleach when I use that 1963 Model N2LP; I want to keep that agitator looking new.

Scott ... Yes; that's a 1970's Whirlpool fridge that was in my house when I bought it 9 years ago. We replaced it with a bottom load Amana about 4 years ago and retired this one to the garage for summer beverages!

Steve ... Don't faint yet; we haven't even put water in her!! What if she's not "water worthy"; then we'll faint!! :-)

Ken ... all appliances in my laundry room are ALL Maytag; even my little Porta-Washer ... does that make me a "Tag Hag", too? :-) The only appliance that won't be Maytag is my freezer; that's an "Estate" upright that I bought at Sam's Club about 12 years ago. Works great!

Don ... you flatter me!! I've enjoyed our friendship, too!

fa_f3_f20 ... yes; it was sitting in someone's basement for 43 years.

Apparently, the original owner's husband purchased this for his wife brand new in February 1964 and had it delivered.

She was a "die hard" Maytag wringer washer user and "refused" to hook up the automatic. She had two Maytag wringer washers she used every wash day.

The people who purchased this house from the original owners last year decided this machine needed to go somewhere where it would be appreciated.

It sat, still on the original Maytag pallet (which I've kept) until it was shipped to me a couple of weeks ago.

I was the first one to remove it from the pallet, open the back access panel and remove the power cord and water hoses since the machine came from Maytag.

When I plugged it in last weekend; it was the first time it had been turned on since it left Quality Control in Newton over 43 years ago! :-)

I still can't believe this woman didn't want to use it. It has a suds saver on it and it could have been used "sort of" like her wringers.

She was a "die hard" Maytag wringer washer user an

Geoff that lady sounds like my mom!
My parent's moved into their first house in January of 1964, a brand new house they had built in a little town called Monroe Center Illinois.
My mom was expecting me when they moved in, and in anticipation of a baby and diapers and stuff, my dad wanted to buy my mom an automatic set(Dad was always trying to spoil mom with stuff, she was not then and still is not a gadget-y person) Mom would have no part of that, she'd never used an automatic before, so that was that. Instead she got a new Maytag wringer, pretty well identical to the one pictured above. Mom used the wringer for two years, they moved from that house in 1966 to where they still live today. Their current house had an A702(?) and once mom got used to using that, she forgot her wringer totally...the A702 lasted til 1977, and was replaced with an A608 set, which were replaced by a dependable care set in 1996.
I still have the control panel from the A702!
Thats a beautiful washer you have!

Cantankerous parents/grandparents

hoover1060, your mom sounds just like my maternal grandmother. She wouldn't have any of those "new fangled contraptions" in the house. (She wouldn't have air conditioning either, which made the un-insulated house a miserable experience in the summer in central Alabama!) My parents were always trying to buy her an automatic washer, but she wouldn't use it. And of course no dryer. When weather was good, clothes were hung on the line in the back yard. When weather was bad, they were hung in the laundry room, which resulted in the floors eventually rotting out.

The only appliances she had, other than heat and a water heater, were that Maytag wringer, a Roper gas stove, and a Servel gas fridge. She eventually did consent to allowing my mom to buy her a mixer.

Robert ... We're looking forward to seeing you, too!! :-)

Jeff ... My parents were "sort of" that way, too. My Mom and Dad went to the local Maytag dealership after they were married in the mid 1950's and Mom picked out a wringer; Dad said, "NO; you're getting an automatic." Mom did not argue!! :-) She was "very lucky", she said. My Mom had only two Maytag's in all her years of homemaking; she reluctantly let her 502S go after my Dad died and it was time to "move on". She LOVES my 1997 LAT that I bought new.

Bobby ... did your Mom keep her dryer, or is it long gone now?

fa_f3 ... my grandmother (my Dad's Mom) was like that. She had no running water (didn't want it) and LOVED living like that. She was in her early 80's when she passed away in 1967. I must say, however, I remember her coming to our house at Christmas vacation (Grandma was a school teacher in a one-room house)and loved our running water and loved it when Mom would do her laundry for her!! :-)

decapitated

I think this was an A702... it was in the house when my parent's bought it in 1966. I've been saving this panel since 1977, hoping to make a lamp out of it.

My mom was never much for appliances, she was/is a great cook, but never really embraced the modern stuff. She grew to love her automatic washer and dryer, and today loves the microwave. The rest od the stuff(dishwasher, disposal, mixer, blender, electric can opener ect...) she could probably do without.

Jeff ... YES; I believe that's a 702. It has the pre-wash and soak period, right? Also, is the "Maytag" written in gold and there are gold dots on the glass?

The 702 was introduced in mid 1964 and those were the 2 features that made it more unique to the 700.

It's funny; but they didn't incorporate the cold rinse dial onto the control panel until they introduced the 06 line.

OH BOY ... save that; that would make a great lamp!! :-)

Oh, Jeff; NICE!

You want to hear a "horror" story? Well ... when I was cleaning the control panel on my A700S, I "lightly" took a damp paper towel and wiped it across the back of the glass; look what happened to the "Maytag" isgnia when I did that.

Needless to say, I'm sick about that.

So ... be careful if you clean the back of your glass!!

Jeff ... here's my timer dial; no pre-wash or soak and the features were "round".

Your timer dial looks like they were designing the dial for the "06" machines.

You have a great looking control panel AND the machine was in "Coppertone" no less!!!! :-)

Post# 209528 , Reply# 65   5/11/2007 at 09:04 (6,195 days old) by hoover1060 ()
yes coppertone...

That A702 was a snappy looking machine, I STILL like coppertone to this day!

Sadly the A702 didn't have a very long life. Mom kinda treated it like it was a wringer(she could never just put clothes in it and leave it go thru a cycle) so it died young from LOTS of use!
In addition to the control panel, I also have the chrome lint filter and black fabric softner cup, as well as the "M" emblem off the front of the machine.

I see what you mean about the letters, I will be very careful handling mine!

Jeff ... Ooooh ... you've got the stainless steel lint filter and black dispenser cup along with the "M"; very nice!!

I bought a new polypropylene agitator and they "threw in" a turquoise lint filter/dispense cup. Looks a little different; but will work.

Not sure how I can fix that gold lettering; probably can't! BUT I will make sure I don't do that again!! :-) All I used was water on a paper towel; strange ... you'd think it'd be stronger than that.

How did your Mom use it like a wringer? Did she take the clothes out before it spun to reuse the wash water?

Gold Lettering

Take a look at some of these gilding products. I have not had any actual experience with them but it might work !

she was always messing with it...

Maybe things have changed, but I doubt it. Mom never could leave the washer do its thing by itself.

The lid switch on the A702 was disabled. She was always opening/closing the lid checking to see if there was enough detergent, or stopping it to soak(the A702 washed the tail end of diapers for me, and all of them for my sister) or she was taking something out if she'd felt it washed enough or adding more stuff... She was always afraid of overloading, and most of the time washed 1/2 loads using the full water setting...
She always felt she had to watch it for something!
A couple of times our A608 went off balance and didn't shut off, instead it came walking out of its place right into the middle of the kitchen, the fill and drain hoses stretched tight...
Maybe thats what she was afraid of?

David ... Thank you!! I jumped on their website; their product might be a possibility. I know I don't want to touch it any more than I have to!!

Jeff ... well; it sounds like your Mom is like us!! :-) Lids up!! :-) I don't pull any clothing out, however, and I let everything go the full cycle.

That's the "wringer" user talking! :-) That's the "neat" thing about wringer washing; you judge amount of water, length of wash time, etc. It's all the rinsing that's the killer!! I now "cheat" and use the automatic for the deep, final rinse; so much easier.

The 608 didn't shut itself off? Oh boy; I bet that scared everyone; it would me!! When my LAT is out of balance; you know it ... I'm usually right there before it even shuts off.

A608 and shutting off...

Geoff,
our A608 didn't always stop when it went off balance, I think maybe because it was off balance alot, and towards the end of its life it had a very difficult time balancing. I always thought there was something that could have been tweaked in the suspension that may have helped it. The off balance switch was also probably worn out.
Of course mom's washing habits probably caused the issue in the first place. She'd fill the tub 2/3 full of clothes, and use the "extra large" water level. When the washer would spin, all the clothes would pile up, causing it to go off balance and sometimes walking across the floor.
I've had my A608 for just over a year now, and never had it go off balance once.
I'm still amazed that mom's A608 survived 19 years with her!

Jeff ... My mom, too, has a thing about overloading the machine. The LAT capacity is (I think) about 20 gallons on the "Super" setting. She uses that setting a lot but I never hear the machine go out of balance when she uses it. She'll check out the machine when I'm using it sometimes and if I've got my queen-sized flannel sheets and king pillow cases in the LAT for a rinse she'll say, "That's a lot of clothes in there; don't wreck the machine!" :-)

I'm the one who takes care of all the throw rugs from the breezeway and bathrooms. I now use one of the wringer washers for that and deep rinse with the wringer, too, because I "might damage the automatic."

I do, on ocassion, use the final spin on the LAT for squeezing out the rest of the water from the rugs but now that spring/summer is here, I can just throw them out on the clothesline instead of the dryer.

Does your mom still have the A608?

Question?????

gadgetgary's profile picture
If you defeat the 'lid switch', don't you also affect the off-balance switch?

I believe that one has an affect on the other.

Gary ... I bet on the 806 you do bypass the off-balance switch; guess that's why it wouldn't shut off!

You know what? On the A700, you can lift the lid and pull the dial back out and you have then "bypassed" the switch! Also, when you lift the lid with the machine running, it pops the little switch back in which activates an arm and it actually pushes the timer dial back in.

On the 700, the switch has to be "out" instead of "in". There's an indentation in the lid instead of the little bump! I was so surprised. When I took the control panel off, I can see the the arm that pushes back on the timer dial.

I wonder how many homemakers figured that one out?

I only discovered it because I was trying to use the "clothespin trick" on the lid and it kept shutting off the machine. Of course, the clothespin would push the switch in thus pushing the dial in.

I guess, in this instance with the 700, the unbalance switch would still work with the lid up; it would push the dial in.

Geoff, my A700 was the same way - lift the lid while holding the dial out and it would bypass the switch. My grandmother would have loved that - her Highlander switch had to be held with one hand while feeding clothes in with the other. (or playing in the water as I did) She used her automatic like a wringer to save the wash-water again and again.

Mom's A608's

lasted til 1996 and were replaced with a dependable care set.
The DE608 dryer was working fine, but the washer had some issues, the previously mention balance problems, as well as a sticky timer.
The set was not junked, but sold to someone I was working with at a summer job(I was in college at the time)

Sigh of relief from LA that the double tubs are staying! You may be my only chance to once again do a wringer washing the way the good Lord intended!

Greg ... I was reading the Helical Drive service manual this weekend and it made no mention about bypassing the safety switch with the dial; I thought that was strange. I guess Maytag didn't want anyone to know that it could easily be done! Safety First ... for both the homemaker and those inquisitive children! :-)

Jeff ... is your Mom still using her dependable care set? That's what I have; they are very nice and the tub on the washer is really big.

Scott ... yes; there will be double tubs. I just can't get rid of them; I use them for a lot of other things, too. They are perfect at Thanksgiving and Christmas for the roasting pans, etc. Also, for cleaning and rinsing mops; so much easier to use two tubs.

It will be a little ingenious to use them with the A700S next to them; I think I've got it figured out though.

1996 Dependable care

Geoff,
Yes, mom is still using her 1996 set, which to my knowledge have never had any repairs. I do know that the washer is exhibiting the same spin/balance issues as the A608 and the A702 before it, namely too many washings of too few clothes and too much water, so mom has to watch it carefully when it starts to spin(so she says) I think she just likes to fuss with it.
We'll see how long this set lasts!

Jeff ... here's what's funny. In one of the service manuals I have, Maytag actually told the dealer to let the homemaker know that "full" water levels are better than not full!

They also made it a point to tell them when in doubt, always run on a "full" cycle.

Maybe that's where your Mom got that; from a dealer.

Washing habits can be hard to break! :-)

water levels

Geoff, the only thing I can think of is mom was used to using a wringer, which she probably filled full and washed multiple loads of clothes in.
As you say some habits are very hard to break, and my mom is definately one creature of habit!

Jeff ... yes; probably from your mom's years of wringer washer use.

The wringer washer instructions actually tell Mrs. Homemaker to fill her Maytag wringer washer to the water line, no matter how much clothing is to be washed.

Geoff, Congratulations of this treasure. You will be amazed at the wash action you will see when you use the Poly Power Fin agitator in this machine. That wide "blind" area of the tub between the last row of holes on the side and the single ring of holes in the bottom of the tub really catches and magnifies the water currents generated by the fins.

This is the model that had tinted sleeves for the fluorescent tube in the control panel so that if, for example, you had a pink washer, the control panel light would be pink also. You can see the sleeve colors in old parts lists.

Maytag's high spin speed was 618 rpm from the start and did not change.
