In the 1980s, I built a new St. Charles kitchen equipped with a Modern Maid drop-in range and one of their dishwashers, too. Both were very troublesome. The basic problem seemed to be cheap materials; I had a lot of problems with rust on the brushed-chrome range top. The dishwasher ate timers for lunch.

Wish I still had that kitchen (St. Charles metal cabinets are great!), but with different appliances.

Wow.. Would they have had late 60's models? Grams swears she had a modern maid dishwasher that caught fire during my aunts wedding in 1875... She replaced it with a Frigidaire and that was there when she moved in 1893...

These were D&M produced dishwashers. I think Sears always got the very best D&M could offer.

The disposers

Are Anaheim/Tappan made and were all over the place in the 70's under names like Whirlaway, Tappan, and Sinkmaster, as well as major appliance names like Caloric, Roper, and Modern Maid.
I have a never used Caloric version of the top model, and a Tappan version of the bottom model.
They were decent disposals!

IIRC D&M was like run-around Sue

Sears,
Modern Maid,
Caloric,
Amana,
Magic Chef,

(and who else?)

in short anyone who wanted a DW under their own badge went to D&M for it.

Kewl, you found "the range that washes dishes" lol.

I remember seeing that in an older bound house and garden magazine from the library in like 1982.

they were all metal back then.

"...fiberglas insulation makes you think your dishwasher isn't working until you see the sparkling results."

And then you pull out the top rack...

If you're talking to me, my Modern Maids were 1981 models. I lived in that house until 1990. In that time, the dishwasher ate two timers and was giving trouble again. I was never happy with the range, either; there were hot spots in the oven, and I was doing a lot of finicky baking at the time. I will say that the oven was the best self-cleaner I'd ever had up to then- it came abso-damn-lutely spotless, every time.

Does anyone know where D&M was (is?) located or if they are still in business? Also, who knew Modern Maid, like Speed Queen, was a division of McGraw Edison. I always thought they were the Canadian version of Caloric! I guess that makes sense since Raytheon owned all 3 (plus Amana) until recently.
