Does your computer do this?: When I begin the subject drift, a whole list pops up, almost a history of every drift ever, in alphabetical order, and if you're not careful--boom, big mistake1 All I wanted to say was Thar she blows. That hundred was given to someone else. I'm giving myself a 40 for still being technically deficient. So hope you like the pix.

Mickey, to the best of my recollection, Norge used that agitator only in wringer machines. The condom, reservoir end no less, is a nice touch, but I am grateful that normal installation of one does not require a hose clamp. While there was was an earlier agitator for the automatic that did not have the burp-o-lator pumping action, it was the same shape as the burp-o-lator. Before the burp-o-lator, the original agitator could be fitted with the Dispenser Wheel on top into which Calgon and a small amount of hot water were added. Like similar fabric softener dispensers, the solution was spun up into the outer chamber so that it dispensed when the washer stopped to fill for rinse. The Calgon helped release detergent deposits during the first part of the agitated overflow rinse and the overflow water rinsed away the Calgon-detergent solution to give good rinsing. That wide agitator in Norge's small solid tub is why Norge washers tested so well in washing. Unfortunately the pot metal pumps fast fell victim to corosion from the very alkaline detergents of the early 50s.

The GE photos were very dramatic. Have you bypassed the lid switch so that you can watch the spin with machine top down and the lid open? The way the fill flume allowed part of the water to spray directly into the outer tub was to help prevent suds lock between the tubs. With so much clearance between the inner and out tubs, you would not think that suds would form so readily during the wash drain, but it can. The first perforated tub V-12 machines had a nasty fill flume that sprayed water all over if the lid was lifted during fill. I replaced the one on my machine with a newer style that does not splash while filling. If you can find a piece of plexiglass or thick glass to sit over gasket around the tub opening, you can have almost as much drama without the "searing flash" of the sudden blackout. Did the GE absolutely drench you? We appreciate the sacrifices you made for art. Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a fun weekend with the washers. Tom

Hi Ralf and Tom

mickeyd's profile picture
I'd be more than happy to take pix of the Grand Old Lady washing. Normally she takes on the worst laundry chores: very heavy back door rugs; outdoor huge sandy/muddy beach towels and "floor rags." Messy, I keep old towels at the ready to foot mop the floor using a wide variety of "washing liquors." Ralf, would you prefer to see her take a break and do a nice load of easy clothes?

Funny you should mention condom, Tom. You released a memory. Wasn't it you who said that this agi DID have a sleeve-type filter available. Any that explain the why the slits are there? Or was it Robert? Wouldn't it be neat to see one.

Of course, all lid switches chez moi are by-passed; the portable Haier is tricky, though, as you well know. Think you and me and Pete are the only Haierites here.
Thanks, now I know why GE pumps are plastic, and they are really marvelous pumps, so instantaneous and forceful

Look closely and you'll see the cracks in the agi; hence the clamps--actually, it came that way.

Still love and use Calgon, esp. in the dishwasher; that and Clorox are my only other aids.

Thank You, Gentlemen

Ohh great pictures Mike, hey there is no cap on the Norge agitator, how does it stay down and not float up when the machine is filled with water? I might have a spare cap laying around here somewhere if you need it. I would think they would use they same threads as on the automatics.

Simple Picture Resizing

Hi Mickeyd,
There is a totally free Software called VSO Image Resizer. It ads a resize picture option to your context (Right Click) menu. Simply right click on the image file you want to resize and left click "Resize Image" the program window will open and just follow the simple instructions. Click my link to go to the VSO Software site. Windows only.

Your washers are great, thank you for sharing your pictures.

I hope this is useful.

David

Robert you might like to add a link to VSO Image Resizer as it could be useful to a lot of users and likely save a lot of bandwidth too. It's Freeware license and contains no Spyware 100% clean.

I have an Apple Power Book G4, no mouse and no left or right click, just a touch pad amd a click bar. Does it matter, and is it compatible with iphoto. Thanks for your trouble, wish I were more able.

Mac OSX

Hi MickeyD,
Sadly VSO Image Resizer is not Mac compatible.
You should get yourself an Apple Mighty Mouse or a Microsoft or similar Mac compatible mouse, a two button wheel mouse opens a whole new world for a Mac user, it makes browsing the web a delight as you can easily scroll up and down web pages with the wheel. Mac OSX has a very useful context menu but the single button cannot make proper use of it.

There should be a simple way to resize pictures in iPhoto, possibly save image for web. I'm not near my Mac at the moment but I will look at iPhoto later.

Dyson 2-Drums Allergy

Hi Mickeyd,
My username is the name of one of my Dyson washers, the Dyson CR02 2-Drums Allergy, My older Dyson washer is the CR01 Memory.
Dyson washers have a unique wash action which uses two aligned drums that rotate in opposite directions. This Contra Rotating wash action is much more efficient and faster at removing dirt than conventional single drum front loaders.

Conventional washing machines may seem convenient, but their poor performance lets you down. So James Dyson asked his engineers to experiment with every imaginable way of washing to design a better washing machine. Along the way, Dyson engineers made a surprising discovery: washing by hand gave better wash results than single drum machines. Because the laundry is constantly on the move, it is manipulated and flexed. This opens the fabric to the detergent, releasing dirt quickly and effectively. To replicate the movement of washing by hand, Dyson engineers designed two aligned drums and engineered them to rotate in opposite directions at the same time: laundry is constantly on the move, manipulated and flexed.

Washing by hand--who woulda thunk???

Post# 243579 , Reply# 26   10/20/2007 at 15:35 (6,032 days old) by tomturbomatic (Beltsville, MD)

Dyson tests--funny that they did not say handwashing beat agitator washing. Giving agitators their due, the fins on most agitators force powerful water currents through fabrics.

Mickey, I don't remember a sleeve type filter except for the red one that slid down on the Hotpoint agitator. Whirlpool had a lint filter to "update" wringer and automatic washers made before the recirculating filters were introduced. The filter pan was pushed down on the agitator, had a double wall design and scoops that worked with the agitator strokes to force water up into the filter pan. Other automatics used something similar for awhile, IIRC. Do you have any idea of the age of the Norge? That knurled brass nut on top of the agitator was probably at one time in the cap of the agitator. The rough surface would have given the nut a better lock into the Bakelite. I know nothing about the slits in the agitator shaft. When you take that agitator out, does the metal inside come out with the agitator? If it does not, I don't see how the brass nut would hold the agitator in place. If the metal is the drive block for the agitator, and the agitator is hollow to allow it to slide down onto the block, then the cap would have held the agitator down on the block and the hose clamps would not have been needed. Sorry if this is way the hell and gone wrong, but looking at the photographs of the agitator without closer examination, I am not sure what I am seeing. Is there a "shoulder" at the location of the first hose clamp? It could be that the agitator was made to accommodate a scoop up type lint filter that would be held in place by the agitator cap and be supported by the shoulder, but that is a wild shot, too. Tom

Hi Tom

mickeyd's profile picture
Happy Late Saturday Night

Look at the first Norge photo "....Burpolator" and see the cracks at 5 o'clock extending down the shaft. That is a crack. The clamps were installed by Kolopihski Maytag 20 years ago, They hold the agitator tight against the column and post, preventing any slippage. Once when the agi cap was stuck, I broke it while trying to remove the agitator, which I sometimes do. The parts of the cap fell away revealing a perfect "knurled"--thanks!--brass nut whose base or collar exceeds the circumference of the opening in the agitator. When I remove the nut which I will brush up with sand paper for Ralf's request, the agi comes out just fine.

I've had the machine for 20 years and I believe it was built in 1966 or thereabouts.

Unfortunately, that is not a condom on the shaft; it's just not yet wet up there. The film is from the the boil wash and 3 rinses--the third is heated-- from the Jenn Air dishwasher above
which changes the water 3 times before the main wash, making those "washing liquors" as the old laundries call them, clean enough to use to wash the back hall rugs or other heavy dirty stuff. You can see the Jenn Air's hose in the second Norge picture. The incoming water is a heated brew containing Electrosol, Calgon and Clorox to which I add some Tide. The water enters in 4 stages making for a very interesting performance, as the Norge Behemoth has its way with the dirtiest laundry in my home.

I will take more careful and revealing pictures next time, and thank you for your interest and kind acknowledgment. I appreciate it very much.

Love the picks, you always push the boundaries with the Washer Water Shots...now what about the twinnys???

Dont blame Tom, I too thought you had a contraceptive device on that agi!!!

Resizing Images on MacOS X with iPhoto

mistereric's profile picture
To resize the image and make it smaller...

click on the images you want to share. shift-click to select multiples.

go to the File menu and choose Export

choose "Scale images no larger than:"

set the two boxes to something like 1024 and 768.

You can experiment with the numbers unil you find ones that work for you. 1024x768 made a picture that was around 400kilobites for me, which isn't too bad, and still shows a decent amount of detail.

some later powerbook G4 computers have a scrolling, "two-finger" trackpad that mimics the scroll wheel on a mouse.

I use an inexpensive Logitech mouse on my Mac Pro at work. Its much nicer than the single button mouse, and you get spoiled by the scroll wheel quickly. The Apple Mighty Mouse is a little expensive, and makes my hand ache. I would borrow one for a day or two before I bought one, to make sure i liked it. I also have a kensington trackball for when i have a lot of mousing around to do.
