Burpalator was what refferred to a Norge agitator spitting out water into an agitator-mounted filter pan. Inda lookede like burping up. Kelvinator used what was called concentric agitation. Unimatic was Frigidaire's first washer mechanism, essentially a direct drive machine. Expwerts here can further elaborate on these terms for you. Bob |

I'm no expert, but continuing on the info Bob provided . . . 1. "Burpolator" is a reference to Norge's agitator that sucked water up through the body of the agitator (on the clockwise half of the stroke, I believe) and spewed it through an opening at the top and into a filter pan (on the counter-clockwise half of the stroke. Burpolator details 2. Kelvinator (and ABC-O-Matic, which is the originator of the design and built the machines for Kelvy) agitation can be seen here. 3. "Unimatic" is a reference to Frigidaire's first toploader automatic mechanism. It was a direct-drive system, arranged as a cylindrical unit about 2 feet tall or so -- transmission on top with the motor directly attached beneath, and the pump attached to the bottom of the motor. This picture shows cutaway diagrams of the first four Frigidaire models, between 1947 and 1954. |
