all to well about "the pile" When I gutted out the donor rollermatic I wanted to recycle the cabinet, so I took it to the local recycle pile. Those trash people were so rude. I had to back this huge vehicle I was driving right up to the pile before they would remove it. So, I sat right there and never offered to help get it out, I let the help do all the work since they were so rude. I didn't even care how much I could get for the carcass, I just wanted to get away from "the pile". They even had razor wire up around the fencing, how ridiculous! They made their first and last buck off any of my donations. |

Years ago, one of the local scrapyards wouldn't pay for appliances because the price was so low, but they would let you drop them there for free. I must have gave them 40-50 hulks over a few months. Then one day I saw a newer Maytag dryer sitting near the pile. Nice shape, I needed it for parts. I asked about it, even offered to PAY for it. No, once they're in the yard, we won't sell them, I was told. That was the LAST time I ever dealt with them. Thankfully, they filed bankruptcy last year, and are now out of business. |

we have that here with "once it comes in, it can't go out"... I thought that's what recycling was all about.....if we can take a machine and a few new parts and get another 10 years out of it, isn't that better than recycling the whole machine to end up with 25% recycled post-consumer goods? this is why we end up with a disposable economy! I can't tell you how many nice machines I have seen at the dump site and not allowed to have them............. |

I have a feeling that the bullets will fly at me - but, Guys, you can't save them all. If a machine were to pop up in Waterloo like this I immediately think: PARTS MACHINE. We cannot go to our local parts distributor and pick up seals, bellows, and rollers anymore, so why not be happy when you come upon a washer like this? Hell, I see good parts just looking at the photo (Jet Action pulsator, possibly the wash tub, maybe a good outer tub, etc.) Then when you do find a machine that is worthy of restoring, or maybe even turnkey - you'll sleep at night knowing you've got the good stashed away if something were to go awry. Plus - don't expect the rest of the public to relish every old appliance they come across and not toss them to the curb. Expect stuff like this to happen. Be proactive and go out and search for it. Otherwise this is all you'll find. But, Kenny - I'm with you on your boycott! Ben |

Last year when I rescued my 1972 Lady K and her cousin the 1972 60-series, I had to plead with the VERY NICE lady on the phone who passed me along to her supervisor, who was willing to listen to my plight. Charlotte has the same (no outbound haul) policy on anything that comes into the yard. I had to explain how the machines were taken there inadvertently, how they were hard to replace, and how it was all my mistake. I think the machines are possibly the only two that have ever escaped the recycling center intact, and Lady was almost not intact. :-) |

This place is by the book, no slipping someone a $20, believe me, I do it all the time. And no fence jumping either. Jail does not appeal to me. Apparently some moron fell on "the pile" and seriouly injured himself. So, one idiot ruins it for everyone else. And there is only one scrap yard here that will even allow you to buy scrap. That makes no sense to me, but it is not my company. F' em.
