I have 5 kids and have company frequently. I'm looking at driving 2 hours to get an older Kitchenaid, and I've looked at the Hobart undercounter used. My husband though wants me to at least look into new models. Any suggestions?

Look at one of the new GE tall tub machines...huge capacity, excellent cleaning, quiet, and reasonably priced. You don't need to go to the high end models to get something good as they are expensive. Was very happy with my old one. It all depends what you want to spend, really.

Oops, forgot to clarify this is dishwashers

Thanks Andrew, I'll look at those. Our budget is, "the cheaper the better!"

Of the GE bunch, my suggestion would be the GLD6700 or GLD6800, I wouldn't go anything lower than the 6700

Here are three models in the top half of the ratings at Consumer Reports. All three machines are rated excellent for reliability, and the user reviews were for them were almost all positive. Sorry, no pictures, but you can look them up online at the Whirlpool and Sears websites.

$400: Whirlpool DU1055XTV

$500: Kenmore (Sears) 1389(2)

$550: Whirlpool GU 2300XTV

All three models were rated excellent for cleaning ability, and the $550 Whirlpool has an adjustable upper rack and was rated excellent for drying. It also has hidden controls.

Most GE models under $1000 were rated in the lower half of the ratings.

Let us know what you wind up getting!

i hate consumer reports, everyone on here that has the whirlpool dishwasher hates it, and says it doesnt even disolve the detergent, i read an article a year or so ago that they were getting paid off by all the foreign car companies to recommend their cars. speed queen makes the BEST washers and dryers on the market, consumer reports does NOT even test them, instead the rate korean machines very high.

Watch it buster!! Don't put me in that boat. Again, your "generalities" are far too wide encompassing. I am very very happy with my Kenmore Elite Tall Tub (aka Kitchenaid). It takes just about everything in a BobLoad and it ocmes out truely clean without residue in the 2 1/3 years I've had it. And is very quiet!!

Depends on the model. If you get one much younger, you may be branded a "cougar".

Oh! You mean a dishwasher?

Some things to think about when buying a dishwasher...
Do you want a quiet one? Is your kitchen near the tv room? Some of the higher end models like Bosch,Kitchenaid,Miele are very quiet. Loading is a big deal for me. I like silverware baskets that run along the front of the bottom rack. Or,the side of the lower rack if need be. I don't like to load "around" a silverware rack or a wash tower. Sometimes I need to put a big pot or pasta bowl right smack in the middle. Racks that hold wine glasses in place is a nice feature. Being able to accomadate large cooking utensils is also nice. Cycle time is something to consider also. My Bosch dishwasher took 2 hours on the shortest cycle (160 degree water). This is just too long! The Kenmore that I have now takes just over an hour and does a fine job of washing. I do like a dishwasher with a SANITATION cycle (think H1N1 flu). Do you own your house? Higher end appliance could be a selling point when it comes time to sell. Just some thoughts to help you decide... How old is that older Kitchenaid you want to check out? If it is a 1979 or so,KDS-18 snag it! One of the best dishwashers ever made.

Oh... The Bosch did not have self cleaning filters. They had to be removed and cleaned. Yuk!

Bosch silverware basket I did not care for. Have to load "around" it.

My portable Kenmore that I use to have. Closest thing I found to a Kitchenaid KDS-18 in 2003. I liked the rack design and silverware basket on this one. It got the dishes very clean in just over 1 hour.

This is a new 2009 Kenmore dishwasher. It is similar to the portable that I had in 2003. It has a wash tower on the upper rack that I have to load "around" which is a pain. It is very noisy and HAS Quiet Guard. When it washes it sprays the lower rack, stops, then sprays the upper rack,stops...back and forth it goes. Drives me nuts! I prefer dishwashers that can to both racks at the same time. It does get the dishes clean in just over 1 hours time. The lower rack does "wheelys" which is a very poor design flaw.

2009 Kenmore upper rack. You can not put anything over that little wash tower in the middle or the spray arm will not work. Have to load "around" that.

It doesn't surprise me that the bottom drawer tilts backward with only a heavy blender jar in the back. Should that blender jar be in the dishwasher in the first place? and then still with the blades screwed on it? Naughty!

Naughty,Yes! I was just using that as an exsample though... 6 plates in the back it would do the same thing. Never had this problem in the Bosch or portable Kenmore. I'm always going to "war" with this rack!

Hmmmmm.....Lower rack that does wheelies, funnel in upper rack, washes one rack at a time...kinda noisy...

I'd say that's a rebadged Frigidaire. Mine looked like that one, although I could adjust the upper rack.

It is a rebadged Frigidaire. Lower-end Kenmores used to be sourced form GE, but got transitioned to Frigidaire in the last 5 years or so.

A fan of the Whirlpool

I recently got new Kenmore kitchen appliances during a remodel and the dishwasher is the only quality appliance I got. The Frigidaire-sourced range and refrigerator are cheaply-built to say the least, but the Whirlpool-sourced dishwasher is one of the best I have ever used, next to a GE Potscrubber from 1975.

Checking for sound/Bob question

washoholic's profile picture
A good way to check out the insulation of a dishwasher is to take your cell phone to the store, set the ringer volume to the maximum setting, put it in each dishwasher with the door closed and have someone call (Or set off the alarm on it). Then compare the noise level.

My next dishwasher will probably be a Kenmore like Bob’s. If it can do a Bob Load and get everything clean then I’m sold. Bob does yours have the manual filter? If so, how often does it have to be cleaned?

Spankomatic, my Tappan a rebadged Frigidaire machine has the same poorly designed lower rack, its like the casters on the back of the rack (first to roll in) are not far enough apart to bridge the gap between the the track in the tank and the track in the door. It will do this empty. i have learned to load the front half of the rack first, it helps, but its poor engineering. I have the "side" silverware basket, its FLIMSY too. Nothing must not protrude even the slightest below the lower basket, skinny steak knife tips, will even keep the lower arm from rotating. IMHO its poorly designed and quirky to load, but loaded correctly it washes very well in about an hour. alr2903

Mine does NOT have the HE wash system, it still has the internal disposer. Magic Clean (Leslie) does have that HE wash system design and his is what was considered the 'replacement" of my model. He has indicated to me he doesn't have to clean the filter out very often and he is pretty touch on his in terms of putting really dirty stuff into it. Larry in New York (CleanTeam) also has the "replacement" version with the HE wash system. Why ya ask, problems with the LG dishwasher?

Alr2903 = Could not agree with you more on the poor engineering. They could have done better. Mine also has the "side" siverware basket. It fits in the front also,so I put it there. Just a personal preference. I am always throwing in a fork or spoon through out the day and like it there right up FRONT.

Of course i have to vote for the Bosch. This is from my house in IL. The house im in now, is a rental as im getting settled here in MA. There is a whirlpool in this house and its a night and day difference between my old Bosch and the Whirlpool.

Oh wow! Thanks for all the pics. I've been trying to decide what's important to me in a dishwasher. I really like the racks with tines that aren't shaped for dishes. I also prefer the silverware on the door (if it gets clean there) and not having to load around anything would be especially nice.

Sound? Not so much. I always figure I can insulate it pretty well around it and silence quite a bit of noise. Cleaning ability is pretty high up there. Cycle times I don't care about too much. At this point the plan is to get 2 dishwashers, 1 for pots, pans, & prep and the other for the actual dishes.

I haven't seen any in the stores I've just loved, but the Kitchenaid was sold. I'm going to keep my eyes open though now and check ReStore frequently!

I love the idea of 2 dishwashers. I always thought if I were going to have 2 dishwashers I would get a regular dishwasher and one with the pull out drawers. This would give me more options for my dishwashing needs. The regular dishwasher for larger items like pots, pans, roasting pans... The pull out drawer for those large cooking utensiles, measuring cups, bowls. Those things I use while cooking. Kinda like putting it all in the kitchen sink, then turning it ON. Could also be used for smaller loads during the week.

Here's what I decided.

I got the Kenmore 1389 for my regular dishes and I'm going to get the Whirlpool GU2475XTVB for my cooking dishes (pots, pans, knives, etc.)
I still wish I could find an older KitchenAid though.
I did look at the drawer dishwashers but decided we generate enough dishes to need a whole dishwasher.
