The Face Seal Parts and how they go together...

Face seal unit of three parts goes onto motor rotor with the steel ring facing the spring. The large end of the spring faces the motor rotor.

Finally the motor rotor goes into the oil pump to drive the oil pump and transmission. The pressure between the face seal and oil seal keeps the oil from leaking between the two.

If either the face seal or the copper oil seal is scored or dirty you are going to have an oil leak.

Different parts!

O.K., now I know I'm not completely crazy! My oil pump parts DO NOT include a piece that looks like the face seal shown here in the photo's. BOTH parts of the seal I have are "step" sided!

Steve sent me a picture of his seal, which appears to be very early, probably from a 1940's mechanism.

Here is what I think Steve...

As not to be confusing...

Part #4 goes into the divit on the face seal first, then part #3 goes on top of that. I should have numbered parts 3 and 4 reverse.

Thankyou-----

Tomorrow Steve 1-18 and I will put this thing together and hopefully the oil leak problem will be fixed at last! I'll let you know how it goes. -Steve (Gyrafoam)

Robert----------

We did discover the face seal that you showed. It was overlooked in the bag of small parts. The BIG question for us now is what is the extra part? I have forwarded a cam-phone photo of it that I do not know how to post to this site. It appears to be some sort of seal, step sided on both sides.

We tested the motor for about 20 seconds and it appears fine. Now we will re-assemble everything and try it under load-----with fresh oil of course! Will keep you posted.

Mechanism reassembled and when tested is working fine as far as we can see. Pumps oil fine and runs quietly. Would still like to know what that other part is.

Seems as though the parts that make up the oil pump and seal system for this particular mechanism are a combination of original parts and newer upgrades. Confusing to say the least!

Steve I didn't get the picture, why don't you have Steve1-18 show you how to put a picture in a post. Its easier than email even. Just put the picture location on your hard drive in the

Upload JPEG Format Picture to share in message: box below.

Even easier to use the browse button to select the picture right out of the directory of your hard drive.

Frigidaire parts show only two seal pieces for the early mechansim. I wonder if someone was in there years back and mixed newer and older parts???

Post# 74004 , Reply# 16   7/17/2005 at 16:31 (6,858 days old) by Gyrafoam (Wytheville, VA)

Oh, I agree-------they mixed up the parts all right! Nonetheless-------the mechanism is running and is quiet. Oil pump is doing the job. Some leakage around trip shaft lever "O" ring. . Have tried EVERYPLACE around here for a new "O" ring for it---no luck. Will try high-temp liquid gasket, and see if I can stop the leakage.
