Has anyone used the new Speed Queen home models? I stopped at an appliance store to scope them out and they seem rock solid, like Maytags used to be. I was trying to get more info out of the salespeople, but for some reason they kept trying to shove a Frigilux FL at me.

Does anyone know what these Speed Queen TL's are selling for?

The reason might be commission incentives.

When I sold for Sears, they were so proud to say and so-ans-so mfr. is offering an extra 1.5% this week if you sell....

PIGS!

Anyway the only rreason I can think of for dissuading you is that the perceived life expetancy for the company may not be there!

Actually I like them a lot too.

Speed Queen Belt Drive Agitation

I've always wondered why Speed Queen is the last hold out on traditional agitation. I'd love to see more manufacturers return to this, but once they've crossed over, they probably won't return.

LOL ROLF LMAO

This, IMHO, sums up the fears of of many on both sides of the fence.

(It's probably much easier to take down the fence and let the herd graze where it may!!!!)

Speed Queen

I stopped at a local dealer today to see the New Speed Queen. They had the number 2 of 5 model on display. They also had a brochure that showed a cutaway of their frontloader. Very impressive. The front loader has a stainless steel outer drum and a 3/4 HP induction motor to drive the tub. I asked the sales guy about pricing on the front loader and he pushed me to the Frigidaire Front Loader as well. They look like great machines. Even the contol panels on the top loader are metal.

Speed Queen in Oz.

Hi people,
I don;t know if this is of any help or interest to any of you, but Speed Queen is apparently available here in Australia under the name of Kleenmaid and they are sold exclusively through Kleenmaid outlets, nice looking machines they are too.
I understand they still use a 120 degree agitation stroke instead of the dragging type system which most T.L.'S here in Oz use these days.
Cheers everyone.

YES... I stumbled across that a while back. Love Kleeenmaid too!!!

Personally I am fascinated that we and OZ (both former Brit colonies) are on opposite ends of the earth and appear to have so much in common on so many levels.

OK OK Allow me me my insanities.. LOL

I am not sure how many of you know this or not but the high end Maytag top loading agitator washers are also exactly like the Speed Queens mechanicaly speaking. When Raytheon owned Amana and Speed Queen, they had a line of Speed Queen washers roll out with Amana's name on them.As time went on and Goodman bought Amana from Raytheon,They left Speed Queen and Caloric on the table. They had no interest in either of those companies because they themselves were a major commercial/residential air conditioning corporation.Speed Queen was purchased by Alliance which also owns a commercial laundry company named Huebsch.Caloric went bankrupt and died on the table.
Now,Maytag owns Amana and somehow the Amana,Maytag,Speed Queen and Huebsch top loading domestic/commercial washers and dryers are exactly the same. The only difference besides style is the Lower end model Maytags have a pollymer tub instead of porcelan and the high end Maytag dryers do not have the stainless steel drum.

not exactly the same . . .

The Speed Queens and Huebsch still have the original transmission and porcelain outer tub. Amana changed the outer tub to plastic somewhere around 2000. After Maytag bought Amana they quickly made a few changes. They developed a version of their transmission (called the "dual drive" because it has two of everything) to fit the Amana design. This is the same transmission used in Atlantis and Performa models. Or what most like to call Norge-Tags around here. The main difference is that the Amana machine uses a slipping belt for a clutch and the Norge-Tags have the slip clutch built into the transmission. Maytag also felt that Amanas stem seal was weak. It was prone to leak. So they redesigned it. Ironically the first attempt was much worse than the original. By the way, I don't believe there is much of a difference in the agitation stroke between the original and Maytags transmission. All Maytag's (except orbital/ helical) have a slower/longer stroke. From a repair point of view I don't really like these machines. They have 3 weak points. The leaking stem seals, direct drive pumps that leak and do other damage, and a short belt life. I have found less problems and longer life with the Norge-Tag design.

Raytheon Amana

I have had my Raytheon/Amana for 7 years and have never had a problem with it. I'll attach a few photos of it.

wmlask, Thanks!
Your washer has the similar/identical tub and agitator as Speed Queen/Huebsch TL. But your one uses electronic control panel with more wash cycles besides the basic "Regular, Perm Dress, and Delicate".

Wonder how do "Knit, and Hand Wash" cycles differ from "Delicate" cycle?
Could they be simulated in SQ TL using "Delicate", "Light Soil" and "Cold" setting?

Wow Bill, that is one AWESOME touch-control Amana! I remember staring at these at Sears when I was 10 (1998), and thought they were the coolest-looking machines, and extremely quiet on spin as well (the display model was plugged in). That was also the first time I had seen a lighted control panel in a new machine. It was the best of both worlds in my opinion; long agitator stroke combined with lighted electronic controls. SQ should add this model to their lineup again!

Thanks for posting!

Knit, Delicate, Hand Wash

The motor has 3 speeds.

The Delicate Cycle Runs on Motor Speed 2.

The Knit Cycle Runs on Motor Speed 2 but it runs for 1 min then stops for 1 min and then cycles like this for the time of the Wash Cycle.

The Hand Wash Cycle Runs on a slow Motor Speed 1 and cycles on and off like the Knit Cycle.

Wow! What a nice looking washer! I remember we were looking at these way back in the early 90's, around 92' or so. Wards had the Speed Queen and the Amana sitting side by side with each other. They were identical except for the brand name. I always thought that the "spackle" painted control panel was "different" on both of them. Personally, I think these machines were slightly ahead of their time. Your machine is an evolution of what we saw. The "spackle" look has evolved more into a granite look.
That lighted control panel is super sharp! I wish they would bring those back!

Hi all just want to say, at the beauty shop i work at the owner baught a new Speed Queen washer, and i watched it do a load of towels, and it has the slower stroke agitation like my whirlpool Imperial 70 does, I really think it is nice to see a modern washer that does not wash with that fast action agitation like the ones on the market today.
If you ask me they should all go back to the tried and true method of washing.

Speed Queen Interior?

mrb627's profile picture
Does anyone have any pix of the Speed Queen interior? The commercial machines have a tub ring that disperses the fill up to 360 degrees around the basket. Do they residential machines still have this? Or do they use the fan-fill like the Amana pictured above?

Nice machines!!

Wow, I like that 90s sleek control panel(as apposed to millenium grunge). and no problems in 7 years. The electronic controls seems very user friendly.

But it probly didn't come in harvest gold, avacodo, or toast. oh shuckerrs.

Thanks for the pix.

MRB:

SQ recently added a waterfall fill along with the fill-around ring. Watching it in action, it is completely unimpressive. Water kinda dribbles from around the ring, with it just dripping at the point furthest from the waterfall part. The waterfall is sloppy also, just running over the tub ring.

OY...the circle-fill of the early-90's SQ coin-ops is much more entertaining! Fills the tub quite fast as well from what I've seen.

If you are in the market for a NEW machine to keep vintage ones company-SQ would be the way to go!!Wonder when the dealers around me will carry them-so it won't have to be delivored all the way from Charlette!!Like the pictures of one-and its agitator that resembles a WP Surgilator.I would prefer the regular electro-mechanical controls. The elctronic ones are cool though.

Older Amana Electronic Control Machine

In addition to the photos I posted before. I have my first newly purchased washer which is an Amana much like the ones I posted pics of. These machines have a slightly smaller (shorter) tub and a smaller opening and lid. They have the cirle fill tub. The newer machine pictured above has a fluid filled ring around the top of the tub that really helps keep loads balanced but has a much more common way of filling.
The older machine has a black control panel that is lighted. I also have the matching dryers for both machines with the stainless tubs. Once I finish my laundry room, I can't wait to have all 4 machines lined up together all lit up. If anyone wants to see pics of the older machine let me know. I think I bought the first Amana in 1992.

Just stopped into the high-end appliance dealership today and saw the Speed Queen. Boy that looks like a solid machine. Top-load and MOL. Listed price $549. Looks well worth it.

SQ in AU

Hi Guys,

You can buy SQ machines in AU, you just need to have an ABN (Australia Business Number) or know somebody who can hook you up with one :)

These machines have always been available in Australia, for as long as the Kleenmaid machines have been SQ based. (Kleenmaid prior to 1988 was based on a Brazilian made BD Whirlpool)

Regards

Nathan
