Very interesting - fascinating to see the water usage for the automatics. They really were about on par with our water-piggies over here for similar size loads.

Now, how do we get a Servis MK22 and an Imperial Rex into a carry-on bag?

Beautiful scans - thanks!

So in 1970/71 we had proper pictures, 1972 no pictures and 1973 the start of those bloomin line drawings! Better than nothing, I suppose, but pictures much better.

Many thanks Paul for posting all the above scans. I have been discreetly dipping into Discuss O Mat whilst at work, quickly glancing through them all and having to surpress quite a few exclamations, as information slotted into place.

The Servis Mk55 was around in 1972!
The Philips 303 was around in 1973, plus we now have its 'AAC' model number!
The Candy C134 wasnt well liked was it!

Fascinating stuff - thanks again for posting.

When I have a mo, I will try and post some of the reports that I have, which tend to be from 1976 onwards. Will be photos of pages though and not scans - my computer is geriatric and to scan two magazines would take hours.

Cheers for filling in some of my 'Which' gaps.
regards
paul

Automatic Parnall!

Wow - didn't know there was an automatic version of the Parnall - I thought there were only semi-autos.

Also the Frigidaire in the other thread! Made in the UK too - I knew these existed from the ads and I think they had the jet-cone, but has anyone ever seen one in real life? So three holy-grails to find - Servis, Parnall Auto and Frigidaire (and a 1502 while we're at it...)

Mark, you're right - it would be so good to go back and find some of these. An Aunt had that rear-control style Liberator, which she replaced with one of the earlier style Hotpoint Liberators. I remember seeing the old machine in a barn, alongside an old Speed Queen wringer...oh to go back in time for those...

Hi Al,
Now that Parnall machine is "Futuristic"..I have a full page advert for the machine somewhere, but have been lazy recently, and need to get a scanner, but when i do, will scan it. The machine had a weird feature in the sense that it shook the drain hose to prevent any drips...don't ask me how, but they promote it on the advert !!

Paul, I have a press release artical for the "Radio & Electrical Trading" magazine from 1969 for the new line of machines that Hotpoint were launching, The New Hotpoint 1600 / Top loader 1504 & the 1469 Supermatic..I will dig it out and scan you the 1600 when i get round to buying a scanner..lol

Parnall features

Hi Keith

I'm really fascinated about the Parnall automatic - how long was it in production for? I know nothing about the Parnall company, apart from having some notion that there were taken over by Hotpoint - maybe you know more? I'm not sure where I got this from and I suspect it is not the case - a neighbour back home had a Parnall-branded front-loader in the late 70s early eighties, that looked like a rebranded Italian washer - any ideas?

The drip-free drain hose is hilarious and brings all sorts to mind - I'd love to know how they did this! Mind you, my Hotpoint Toploader can shake the whole laundry room let alone the hose when it goes off-balance in spin.

Hi Keith.

Concurring with Paul in Royton, it would be great to read up on the 1600, Especially the information issued at its and the 1504 etc introduction date (so it was released in 1969 and not 1970 then?).

Such a weird machine in that so little is known about it, so any information and piccies you are able to share would really be gratefully receieved.

On tenter hooks, but in suspended animation until you get a scanner. lol.

Cheers
paul

Am so sorry guys,

I got it totally wrong! Just spoke to my Mum.....she said my Nan's washer was a Parnall semi automatic bought around about 1956!....In my defense I was about 7 the last time I saw the machine! My Mum did say though, before my Nan bought the Parnall she used to hire a machine for a morning each week from a man who went round the streets with 6 washing machines on a horse drawn cart. You paid your money, he would bring the machine into the house for the morning and collect it in the afternoon!!!! Mum had no idea what machine it was he hired though.

witnessed a Hotpoint 1600 in the flesh so to speak. One of my sisters friend's had one in her house. I must have been about 10yrs old and was amazed at such a machine....I origionally thought it was an Indesit as my aunty had a L5. Unfortunately it was not in operation.

Thank you for sharing this!! I didn't know that my favourite vintage washer (Indesit K5) was available in the UK!! Maybe she is not the best one of the test, but I'll bet she is the funniest to watch when she spins :))))))))

Morning Guys...Paul, David, Paul..
The artical i have was removed from a Electrical distribution magazine for the electrical appliance industry..it is quite big, and must open up to A3, and has 3 sections, 1600, 1504 & 1469..and from how it is headed up, it looks like these were the new machines for 1969 !! I will get it scanned soon, hopefully !! (while i am typing this my 1504 is doing the weekly wash..41yrs after it was introduced)

Paul, the Parnall company which was based in Yate in Bristol was originally part of the Radiation group, and around the mid 70's was sold, after many companies owning it, i think it was bought as a collective group of companies by Hotpoint/GE. I am not sure of a Parnall front loader, but like many companies of the time they use to take a machine a re-lable it, so there could be a strong possibility..regarding the Spin-washer, it first made an appearence in 1960, and 3 versions later, ended in roughly in 1971/2 with the automatic version, which probably ties in within the selling of the company to Tube Investments. The "automatic" version probably ran for about 4/5 years but as you say, very little is known about it and the advertising was minimal compared to Hotpoint, Hoover & servis of the time !!

Hang on...(keith run's to get the "auto" advert....

I love the heading to the advert i have it starts off:
"Yesterday, there wasn't much to choose between different automatic washing machines. Overnight this has changed...This morning Parnall are years ahead"

Two of the things that interest me are the "Brain Drain" button which as they state, drains the water hoses back into the machine, so they don't drip on the floor, (i thought they said it shook the hose, but unfortunately not..LOL) the other thing which is kewl, is the "Suds saver"..with their previous machines, after the wash you saved the wash water to a compartment below the tub, then took out the washed clothes, but un-rinsed, and washed the next load, but i am not sure how they did this with an automatic. I need to get hold of an old Parnall engineer !!

As soon as i get a scanner i will post all this fascinating literature, it must be shared and not just stuck in cabinets !!

Have a good weekend all. Keith

Cant wait for you to post some interesting stuff on the Parnal and any vintage photos of washing machines.

Just love the old stuff, much better made than modern day appliances.

Hi Keith

The Yate location makes sense of the Hotpoint-GEC aspect. Hotpoint bought out Jackson (cooker fame) who were based in Yate too. If what you imply is that there was a group of companies there that would make sense - probably the same time that Creda came on board. I've never heard of Tube Investments - is that where the TI in TI-Creda and TI-Jackson came from? Hotpoint (i.e. indesit) still has a plant in Yate - its where Tumble Dryers for all of the group brands come from.

D

PS - my 9605 is also doing the wash - two loads (one 40, one 60) in less time than one 40 wash in the Zanussi - Paul you're right, the older technology is still so much better!

Not quite

vacbear58's profile picture
The Radiation group (Jackson, Parnall & one gas cooker company, not Parkinson Cowan) was bought out by TI (Tube Investments - Creda) in the late 1960s. Whilst the Jackson cooker range carried on (with a few overlaps) beside the Creda range, the Parnall 275 tumble drier (which I believe to be the last Parnall product) quickly became the Creda 275, then growing to become the 400 and later the Reversomat version.

If you check out some of the recently posted (in other threads) early 1970s info from Hotpoint/AEI that includes Hotpoint, English Electric & Morphy Richards products but not Parnall or Creda. The Creda branded Hotpoint machines came much later as I recall, towards the end of the 1980s

Al

I am gob smacked by all this :-)..........i am trying to read all the reviews at once............it is just so good to see the diversity of machines, the different thinking behind them, the styling and oh so heavy build qaulity...........magic stuff all of it.

As others have commented, these machines need to be found (though some are already preserved).......arghhh it never ends :-)

Paul thanks so much for bringing all this to the group.

Hi Everyone.

I just love reading and looking at the vintage machiness. Would love to come across some of these vintage machines. They were certainly well made, and note how slow some of them would spin.

I remember my mum having a servis mk72, just loved that machine. Anyone know how to invent a time machine, lol.
