I cleaned the tub and fired up the Supreme to test it out today.

It passed with flying colors, and did so very quietly. Such class and sophistication compared to the Thundering -- and at this point Dundering -- Thermador.

Interestingly, this machine fills for two full rinses, not the single final rinse that the KDS-22's provide. But, while I get an extra rinse, I did not detect a filter-clean purge. I wonder if this cycle sequence is peculiar to ISE. I should state that it's possible I filled the machine with more water than required for the purge, so I may have to check that process again. Comments welcome.

Also, while the lenses for the cycle indicator lights appear to be green, they all light up orange except for the "Clean" indicator, which does light up green after the end of the drying period.

The quiet operation was a delight to (barely) hear. Even when it drains, it does so in relative silence. It's only going to get quieter once the machine is in its enclosure after installation. One thing I did hear is the urping that's indicative of a bad check valve. I've been told there's a GE part that will fix the problem, so will be looking into that.

So far, I couldn't be more pleased. This is truly going to be a lovely machine to grace our kitchen.

One thing I noticed is a small detail on the upper rack that I don't find on the Supreme. The series 20 Superba has two cylindrical bumpers up front on the top rack, but the Supreme doesn't. Are they missing or did they stop installing the bumpers after the 20 series? I don't recall the bumpers on the KDI-21 I used to have.

The next big phase in this project will be switching out the door components, as the interior of the one on the Supreme has a number of chips. The series 20 Superba is my donor machine, and its door is in perfect condition.

Once the door change is done, I'll install new stainless panels, address final cleaning details, and the Supreme will be ready for the kitchen.

I'll post pix of it in its new home when the time comes.

I'm glad to hear that you'll finally be rid of the Thermador. I've never been a fan of their products anyway. They've always seemed overpriced, and don't perform any better than something lower priced IMO.

Tim, I think you have a lot of company. That would at this stage include me!

I cut the TT so much slack over the past year, but its performance doesn't come close to justifying the racket it makes or the imperfections in timer sequencing for some cycles. I also never found the steam cycles to improve cleaning results.

I know I'm going to enjoy having a Hobart derivative again.

A Stainless Steel Preview (of sorts)

here are 2 pics of my KDC-21 (original Hobart Built) DW with the Stainless panels. Just imagine your control panel with these bright, shiny panels in place!

Thermador appliances

Can be overpriced but I would not trade my Thermador [ CMT-21 ] Micro-convection double wall oven for any oven I have ever seen or used. You have to remember the TD DW that is being discussed here is really a WasteKing design and the name says it all. TD did once build a high quality DW but that ended about 1971 or 1972.

Steve, I have always thought your Classic looked super sharp with stainless panels.

I added stainless panels to our KDI-21 just a month or so before we sold our other house, and they pulled off a major transformation on what was then a nearly 20-year old machine.

The Supreme has an all-black control panel similar to the KDI-21, so I have a sense for how great it's going to look once the stainless panels are on it.

The love affair has already begun, and it's only going to intensify as things progress.

True Thermador

roto204's profile picture
John, you've alluded to the "true" Thermador (non-Waste King/Universal) design dishwashers that died off in the early seventies. Do you (or does anyone) have pictures/brochures/etc that show a true Thermador wash system? What was it like? We're all used to the twin-arms-on-a-stick and curlie-cue tines galore that were hallmarks of the WK design. What was the real Thermador like?

"Waste King . . . the name says it all"

John, I do love your way with words!

It's interesting that I'm replacing a machine that was made by a disposal company but given a major appliance manufacturer's badge, with a machine that was made by an elite appliance manufacturer (particularly of dishwashers) but badged as a disposal company's product.

From a badging perspective, I'm replacing one quirky machine with another, but at least this time the manufacturer has unassailable credibility in the field of dishwashers.

A rose is a rose, and a spade is a spade. It's high time to get the spade out and plant a rose.

Bonded at the molecular level

So is this thing a Thermastein or a FrankenAid? Will it resemble the machine I was quizzing you all about yesterday? The one from our Habitat ReStore? I got my Mom some ss inserts for her KDS-20; the one I did that huge thesis on and put on here a few days ago. I think she'll like it. She doesn't hate her Almond appliances, but I think it'll be a fun switch for awhile. That's the neat thing about the KDSs 18-20. When you get tired of a color you can just switch it. If people had known how long the machines were going to last and how stylish they were going to remain, I think they would have ordered more colors.

My parents have SS tiles for back splashes, so I think this will look good.

Does the door equipment between the two machines match?

It's a Kitch-In-Sink-Er-Aid-Or

rp2813's profile picture
Nothing, absolutely NOTHING Thermador or WKU about the ISE machine, and that's the way it should be! It's Hobart-inspired Kitchen Aid through and through and we've determined that it's the same as a 22 series. YAY!

Door panels are similar between the ISE and the KDS-20 donor machine, and I've been advised by the experts that they can be interchanged. This would not include the control panels, which are different in looks, shape, and options.

The one thing that's obviously different on the interior of the doors is the detergent dispenser. On the KDS-20, there are covers on both cups, and the cups are on the "top" side of the dispenser. On the ISE, only the "main" wash cup has a cover, and the cups are on the "bottom" side of the dispenser. I believe this is a change that Whirlpool made right away to reduce the potential for dispenser wiring to short out. I think that's the only thing that will have to stay with the ISE when I put the door liner from the Superba on it.

Take a look at my ISE thread further down here in this forum and you'll see a series of pix I posted of my machine:
