I like when they have a pic of the set and they say it's like GE and the pics of the console say Whirlpool.

Another one I love is when they say the machine is 3 years old and they're like 16 years old.

I am only 40 miles from Baltimore so I sent them an email to see if they are still available and ask them for more info. I asked if they have any pics of the inside of the washer and were they sure they were only 3 years old. Will be interesting to hear the answer. If they send any pics I will pass them along. If they are still available I could be very interested....will keep you posted

considering the knobs for temp/water level, I would say this is a standard capacity machine, definately belt drive, about 1983/4ish, most likely waterfall lint filter......

dryers door says standard capacity too, but at least a matched set

still not bad for 30.00....even if they don't know what they have

let us know how you make out!

There were a couple mid-line large capacity Whirlpools from the mid 80s that had those knobs. Oddly, this was the full-line console style in 1982-1984 or so, just as you said, but certain models continued with it with the 1985 models, and some higher-ups got the more woodgrain fully sloped console.

I bought an LA5580XP in summer 1986 at Circuit City before I found my Kenmores on sale. The washer looked identical to this - was a large cap and the dryer standard, but that was how they were selling the pair. You're very right about the dryer...I am not sure any large cap. versions had the side-swing door. The washer had a winged Surgilator, and yes indeed, a manual filter...Whirlpool was big on them up to the end of the belt-drives while Kenmore had dropped them years earlier.

Nicely featured machine, if I remember correctly it had four levels, three temps (or that may have been reversed), two speeds, four cycles. Other than the lint filter, which I thought was AWESOME, there'd be nothing to object to for any consumer, but many didn't like manual filters. There was one model lower, which eliminated one of the levels/temps that also looked similar. My pair was going to be Toast in color, it was either that or Almond so I picked Toast. I really wanted the KMs though, but I have wondered what would have been had I taken delivery of the WPs.

Funny about the ad!

I think they dropped the zero on the age figure accidentally on purpose because they presumed there wouldn't be a lot of replies for a 30-year old pair.

your right......I don't know where my brain was at......we had three midline machines at work, 4 cycle, 3 level, 4 temp, large capacity....forgot about those...

thru my company I got my Supreme set at a discount (my first new set) when they got these....package deal for company and employees to purchase at the same time...I paid 500.00 for the set...Imperials weren't available to us....

too many times people don't match capacities for pairs, and sometimes dealers did the same thing.....

either way they are nice machines

$500 was a great deal at that time! I'd have done that too. I actually paid something like $18 more to get the Kenmores, but they were what I really wanted because they looked just like my Mom's. Too bad I couldn't have had both!

Circuit City usually had some weird models that you couldn't find elsewhere, I think so that their price match less ten-percent or whatever it was would never come into use because nobody else carried the same exact model. But, with that said, I think if I had gone to a large capacity dryer, it would have had the fully sloped, supreme style panel and would not have matched the washer. I don't recall browsing the selection at the store much, I think because the pair price brought me in from a newspaper ad. Had I been aware that WP was still building standard cap. washers, I'd have bought one purely for nostalgia reasons and not bought my Kenmores.

We had a standard capacity dryer matched to our 18lb. 1974 Kenmore for 9 years. We never knew of anything to complain about, but I think looking back that we may have had less wrinkling in a larger dryer. My Mom always folds right away, so that may have not been much of a problem.

Not The Same Model

Quite a number of stores do this. They have a "price match" and offer it only on models that are particular to their store. This way there's no way that you could match the price.

It's irritating.

CERTAINLY SOUNDS LIKE A SCAM!

wetguymd's profile picture
Here is the email that I got:

Hi. The washer and dryer I am giving away both work fine and are in good condition. I need to get rid of them by this coming weekend at the latest (I don't have room in the UHaul for them). You'll need to come get them if you want them.

However I ended up getting about 20 emails for the washer & dryer I am giving away, so I'm going to try and give everyone who has emailed so far a chance at this. I actually work for CraigsList and we have a phone code system which I can use for this. If you are still interested, here is how it will work.

Reply to this email and leave me a phone number (with area code) that you can be reached at. Let me know if you would rather get text message or a phone call. Shortly afterwards you will get a text message or an automated phone call from CraigsList which will give you a 4 or 5 digit code.

After you get it, immediately email me back with the code they gave you and your full phone number again. (Your code needs to be checked within 20 minutes after you get it or it expires and can not be used.)

I'll check everyone's codes and the person who received the correct one will be declared the winner. I'll email them and set up a time that they can come pick up the washer and dryer.

PS: When you get the automated call or text message, it'll say not to give your code out to anyone because of scams, etc. Simply disregard that message for this. That's meant to help protect someone's account info when they sign up for a free Craigslist account. Here we are just using the system to generate codes for this giveaway, and not actually signing up for an account.

PS: You can try to get the winning code as many times as you want. However you have to use a different phone number each time in order to get an additional code. It's just the way our phone system is set up.

"People are on crack" Oh Martin!!!!

Gave me a hearty laugh, then 30 years old for 3 bucks--too funny, and now the email with so many directions that it reads like an IRS form.

At least, he's having a lottery instead of an auction. That's encouraging.

I have a 77 Whirlpool with the 18 pound tub propelled by the original standard-sized, non-winged surgilator. Very roomy and turns large loads nicely, including a comforter or quilt.

Here's what the scammer is trying to do:

Craigslist requires on certain portions of their site that the ID of the poster be verified BEFORE an ad is allowed to be posted. This is done in several ways and they are getting more and more creative in trying to stump the scammers. One is by using those alpha-numeric characters that you have to enter as confirmation. This helps prevent automated or computer generated ads because computers can't read the code.

Other times this is done by way of a phone call that Craigslist places to whatever number you give them during ad generation. They call you, you get a 4-digit code, and you use the code for X period of time while placing ads. I had to go through this to sell four used tires recently. Craigslist is VERY clear about telling posters not to give out this code, but our scammer buddy here is trying to get people to do just that by playing on some people's interest in a 30-dollar laundry pair, which sadly some people probably really need. They went so far as to tell people that Craigslist is going to tell you not to give out your code, but it's OK in their case to do just that.

What the scammer is going to do next is repeatedly place however many hundreds or thousands of nationwide ads using that code, for things that are probably worse scams or for prohibited stuff, and the account of the person who gave up their code gets the blame (or even the potential legal action).

The scammer in this case needs a size 11, triple-E wide steel toed shoe lodged somewhere unpleasant for this kind of bull...

Theres the same type of scam going on for Auto's.......

advertise cheap....tell you to send money to a ebay account to be held until the buyer says to release the money once he has the vehicle.....

and also the seller will have the car shipped to you........

I had one guy tell me he's in the Military and where he is stationed at and the car is with him....suprise to him.......My nephew is a Sargent at that exact base...no such person....I wished he was.....I would have had his ass arrested!

I know we can get carried away with CL and appliances....but just be careful out there guys, try not to go alone, or at least keep in constant contact by phone the whole way there and back, and let someone know where you are going exactly...fortunately I have a few cop friends that will go with me...packing heat just in case.....never had a problem so far, but don't let your guard down!

What Martin has mentioned in his last paragraph is exactly why I don't respond to CL ads unless it is here in Wausau.  I know this town like the back of my hand, and know a couple of guys on the city police force and sheriff's dept. as well.  If I decide to check out an advertised item, I always give my wife the address of where I'm going, and call her once I arrive at the location.  If the address is in a questionable part of town, I don't go, simple as that.  If the seller hesitates about giving me a definite location to view the advertised item, this also sends up a red flag.  Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The Pros and Cons was it was a CASH only deal......Sears offered credit payments, but the place I worked at was in a hurry to set up their laundry which I ran, and the company delivered these machines with no charge, even to my house, in ONE day, back then SEARS had a 5 to 7 day wait to be delivered....

price aside....it was a hard choice of which way to go.....I liked the Kenmores as much as the Whirlpools....the real disapointment was my first new belt-drive, and yet the started this fake comb self-clean filter.....I was looking forward to the true Magic Clean filters....live and learn

Kenmores

Back then too, Sears had the "Service what we Sell" thing going, so a lot of folks felt that they wouldn't be left in the wind if something went wrong.

Among folks that couldn't fix their own stuff, this was a key selling feature.

My grandparents old Kenmore has a sticker on it that says, "Sears guarantees that functional parts for this model are available for a minimum of 15 years". It also helps that to some degree, WLP, the maker of the 110 model prefix machines is fairly consistent with many things---that is some of the major parts carry over for a long time. It's nice that I can buy a dryer maintenance kit for my grandfather's 1975 Kenmore and then the same kit for my 1990 WLP at home here, because the design in theory is the same.

I remember a neighbor of mine was going to toss both his washer and dryer as they broke the same day. I said, "Wait a minute, let's check some things here....".

I hit the dryer first, we found that the tab for the start switch on the door was broken and of course when I pushed it with a screwdriver it worked like a charm. $20 for that switch and the dryer was like new again...

Onto the washing machine---a direct drive WLP from 1995. We found a broken motor coupling and a broken suspension spring. Took care of that, good to go. $120 in parts for the two machines (I think we changed a pump and some other stuff on the washer) and good to go. Beats $500 for two new appliances.

The washer lasted until a few years ago when my neighbor decided to toss it. I stripped it for parts for my 1996 WLP. I always salvage consoles and what I can so that I have spares---saves a ton of money when the time comes.

The point is, if you're handy like most of us here, you can hone in on the one that gives you want you want, because you know that inside you know how to fix them.

But to a lot of folks that don't know, Sears was always billed as being reliable and backing up what they sold and that's probably why they may have outsold their sister brands like WLP through Circuit City and the like.
