Good Saturday Morning Everyone: I'm new to this site. I love all sorts of old vintage appliances big and small. I also love old vintage cars. Anyway, I knew MW put their label on a lot of stuff like sewing machines because I have sewing machine fetish. Also blenders, electric fry pans, but you get the drift. I NEVER knew they had a line of washing machines until I was in the gallery on this site called Vintage Neat Stuff. I guess they were marketing like Sears. Does anyone know who came first? Sears or Ward? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS WEBSITE. I have been stuck on ever since I signed up two days ago. I really need to get some other stuff done, but can't tear myself away!!!!!

CORRECTION: 'Vintage Fun Stuff'.

Welcome Retromania!

112561's profile picture

I have quite a fetish for the small appliances as well, fry pans, blenders, percolators, toasters, waffle irons here, with a smattering of steam irons thrown in. I love vintage major appliances as well, and aspire to turn my kitchen into GE or Frigidaire, circa 1958 through 1965 someday. I have a thing for vintage stereo consoles and components too.

Montgomery Ward was founded in 1872, and Sears Roebuck founded in 1886, just to keep it simple for the moment. One of my prized posessions is the Fall and Winter 1959 Montgomery Wards catalogue. I hope you will enjoy this site as much as the rest of us do!

Don't know too much about mw, but I'm like you in that I love vintage appliances. My kitchen has a 1958 ge wall oven in pink, 1942 o'keefe and merrit gas stove in white, 1949 hotpoint refrigerator that was just recently painted pink, 1955 hotpoint dishwasher that is in pink, 1948 Youngstown Kitchen vent hood(is original to the house) that was just repainted in pink, and then the washer and dryere is a 1963 Lady Kenmore set in turquoise. Also have other appliances that are in storage. Not to mention all the small appliances displayed on the top of the cabinets (stuff like blenders, mixers, roasters, and percoluators). Also have a thing for the tube style radios and televisions. Have about 150 radios and about 50 televisions.

Oh and welcome to the club. :)

Welcome!

I am a hoover kid, but I have just about everything. Mainly vacuum cleaners, but have 2 mixers, old blender, telephones, fans, and musical instruments.

I have a montgomery Wards vacuum cleaner from the late 50s. Its a Eureka in 2 tone green. Very cool. My profile picture is of it.

Country Ford: You are making me soooo jealous. A pinkt wall oven & an O'Keefe gas stove. One of my fantasies!!!!! O'Keefe gas stoves cook as good as they look. They weight a ton. How ever did you get it in your house or were lucky and it was already there?! You are the lucky one. What make is your wall oven??? Is it that wonderful sort of Pepto Bismol shade of pink. I also love vintage turquois appliances and someone on this site and I can't remember who it is has a vintage fully restored matching set wahser and dryer in Lady Kenmore. All of a sudden I can't remember how to spell Kenmore. I think that's right. I know: Thirty licks with the belt, right?! Or expulsion from this website. Anyway, I like 112561 want to put in a vintage kitchen some day from the same time period.

Oh. Sorry Country Ford. You just said a '58 GE wall oven. My ADD is really kicking in this morning. Too much bourbon last night and not enough caffein yet this morning!

My 1961 house we moved into on 11-25-61 (!) started with a brand new '62 I guess white Frigidaire refrigerator, not frost free but had a separate door to the freezer, had it shipped in the crate from Lynchburg, VA and an apartment sized white Norge stove, from probably the mid '50s. Kitchen was white cabinets with white Formica with gold flecks and threads in it. Walls were sandalwood color, just a very lackluster look. So, for the look I want will encompass late '50s to possible mid '60s. Wish I could have grabbed the wall oven the neighbor threw out a few years back.

My kitchen appliances are less than twelve years old at present, the floor and counters have been updated within the last thirty years. It needs a complete makeover, and will get one in the near future, at least paintwise. This Ebay picture is not my cooktop.

Hey 112561, that cooktop looks like the one that we had in our circa-1965 split level. Ours was brown, and IIRC it was mirror reversed from that one -- the controls were on the right. The GE logo lights up red when a burner is on.

This is NOT my kitchen

112561's profile picture

A house around the corner from here has or had that GE cooktop, and wall oven, and like I say, the pic was ripped from eBay, I am surprised that it seemed to have been offered with left or right pushbuttons. Another configuration I'd like in a GE kitchen would be the buttons on the front of the cabinet under the top, or on the front edge of the vent hood. Where to find such things in my area?

And we had that same cooktop in avacado with a double P7 wall oven. The house that had these was built in 1969. So that GE stuff had a long run.

My vintage kitchen is in the middle of chaos right now, needs paint and a total makeover, I am sorry to say. The pics I posted in the last posts are Ebay pics, and this house no longer has the gold threaded counters, but here's a shot of some mixers.

I have a big fine Kitchenaid stand mixer that I love, but when I am beating certain thnigs like certain icings I still use my mother's old chrome early 1960's Sunbeam Mixmaster. It's on it very last leg.

Sunbeam Vista

112561's profile picture

The one on the left is a very dead Sunbeam Vista. I didn't try it in the store, and I'm not out much anyway, less than five dollars.

A Kitchenaid mixer would go right through my countertop! LOL People here rave about them, never a complaint!

Actually the mixing bowls came from Goodwill, the same day I bought the mixer, which is from Salvation Army. The stainless bowls will go on the chrome '70s Sunbeam. I have to stop buying mixers etc, ran out of room!

You asked for it, so here it is. Pics of my kitchen. Might be a few. But here goes. The first one is of the O'keefe and merrit gas stove and the Youngstown kitchen hood. The hood was in the house when we bought it and was original to the house. The house was built in 1948. We had the hood stripped down and painted pink. The stove we bought from a lady who's parents had bought it brand new back in 1942. It hadn't been used for sometime, but we cleaned it all up and had the valves rebuilt and it works great. You can also see the wall oven in the background. That I found at a second hand store in their as is yard. It had the matching cooktop. They wanted only $7.00 for the both. I bought them right then and there. They looked like they had hardly been used.

This is the 1949 hotpoint fridge. We picked it up and had to rewire it. It works great. Just recently got back from the paint shop. Again we had it painted pink. Just waiting for the new gaskets to come in. As soon as they do we will be putting it back in our kitchen.

It is no longer in the laundry room. And we have new cabinets above the set now and all my irons displayed as well. I just cant seem to find the pictures. Anyways gives ya an idea.

CF: I'm back looking at the appliances again. On the O'Keefe where the knobs are, what is that little drawer? Is it a grease trap for the griddle and is that cover on the griddle original or was it originally white also? That pink Hotpoint frige is tough and what did you say happened to the turquois frige? I knew someone that had that turquois frige, but in white. Us Southerners were so conservative. I only knew one family when I was growing that had appliances of color - chocolate. Loved 'em. Thought they were neat, BUT if I had happened into someone's kitchen that had turquois or pink appliances, I would have had an orgasm not knowing what was happening to me!!!!!!

And very conservative, part of the reason for the endless string of white appliances here. They cost less, and the more time goes by, I'm gladder my parents were so careful with money. But, I have to have color in the kitchen, appliancewise, while I'm still able to enjoy it.

Yes, Frigidaire made ranges with "french doors" - I have one (1956 model - I think). It's still sitting in a storage locker, but I have plans to install it one of these days. Here's a photo:

Ok now. My mothe's 40 inch Frigidaire which was sort of similar in appearance, the oven would actually pull out and rest on the door for easy cleaning. My mother being a dedicated housewife had that thing pulled out all the time. Wait, that sounded kind of well you know. She cleaned the oven all the time.

The cabinets were bought from Home depot. We put them in about two years ago. I did all the tile work as well. On the stove that is a greas trap. There is two more under the burners. And that is how the griddle would have looked originally, but just shinier.

In the old t.v. series Bewitched, they had a Frigidaire refrigerator in their kitchen with the push button automatic open feature. I think it was a pale yellow. Kind of hard to tell. Anyway, it was tough. I don't remember any vintage appliances of the period in almond. Had a childhood friend who's parents had the same frige, but in chocolate.

"Monkey Ward"

From the late 70's to the early 80's, my sister was the switchboard operator at the Montgomery Ward store in Kokomo, Indiana. Thanks to her employee discount, just about every appliance in her house was a Montgomery Ward "Signature" brand. My dad always used MW paint. He thought it was the best. I liked using it, too. Good memories! The MW name lives on as an Internet shopping site--nothing like the old store.

So, MW is...

...only by catalogue now! I thought they were gone for good. The nearest one here was 30 minutes from here in Greenville, SC at the Greenville Mall.

J. C. Penneys

112561's profile picture

They had a two story Penneys in the Palm Beach Mall in 1968, and it may have survived in some form there until the mall closed, by about 2009. I loved their electronics and record department, we went maybe four times a year to the mall if we were lucky.

In the 1960's when I was a little kid, we did not have a mall. We had shopping centers and one was really decent. To go to "the mall" you drove 30 minutes north of my town to The McALister Square Mall in Greenville, SC. It had three big anchor stores: Ivey's, Myers-Arnold and Belk-Simpson. Like your family we would go several times a year. When mom moved to an apartment at an assisted living and we closed out her house, I kept a set of Fieldcrest towles that were purchased at Ivey's in the 1960's. Since they were guest towels they were monogrammed so they were mailed to Atlanta, embroidered and then mailed to her here in Anderson. That was a lot handling, but people thought nothing of it! Montgomery Ward came to Greenville later when the Greenville Mall was built. Now the Greenville Mall and McAlister Square Mall are gone and there a newer mall on the north side of Greenville that is getting a little age on it now. It had been upgraded a couple times and it is still really nice. Do you have any more vintage photos of malls around the nation, etc?

I found some online, and there are people here who have posted pictures over time. Here's one from Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois, it opened in 1966 and closed in 1979. And, abandoned after "The Blues Brothers" filmed there in 1980.

I can't find any pix of our 60's Penneys in color.

It was a big deal when it opened.  This modern building in a suburban mall surpassed the big downtown store in square footage, and no doubt siphoned off customers, triggering downtown's closing some years later.

The articles related to the pictures above contain a little bit of fun merchandising information.

Penney's is long gone from this location.  Upstairs became Burlington Coat and downstairs Home Express.  Nordstrom Rack came in after HE folded.

Unfortunately, I don't personally recall the fountain, it is likely a glycerin type though. They had a fantastic record store, and the Salon Of Music, the Magnavox dealer. I wish I could remember anything more about the place, and I don't remember when we stopped making the trips down there.

Sears also had home kits. And, let's not forget the Sears Allstate automobile!

And did you know for a time Montgomery Ward was owned by Mobil Oil?
I think another reason Dixie Square Mall failed was the area it was located in.
Just horrible.

Some malls just have to be redeveloped to survive. Meyerland Park here in Houston was one such mall. It used to be an internal mall and they redeveloped it into an external mall. All entrances to the stores are now from the outside, rather than the inside.

Franksdad:

What malls do you recall living so close to Greenville other than McAlister Square Mall, Greenville Mall and the Haywood Mall? What were the popular shopping center including strip malls in the 1960's?

Malls

Do you remember the Bell Tower Mall? They had a Woolco and an Edwards Department Store. Edwards was phased out when Wal-Mart came to the Upstate. I don't remember the other stores and it wasn't as nice as McAlister Square. Bell Tower Mall was located on the old Furman University campus (before they moved the university to North Greenville). Since Bell Tower Mall was in a bad neighborhood there were a lot of robberies, purse snatches, and rapes at Bell Tower Mall so it fizzled out quickly. Greenville County remodeled Bell Tower Mall and moved all Greenville County offices there in the late 80's. Wade Hampton Mall on Wade Hampton Blvd. was really swanky back in the late 50's and early 60's. There was a Grant's, Belk-Simpson, and other stores. It was made just like the Richland Mall in Columbia with all the stores around a central plaza and the sidewalks were all covered. The construction company my dad worked for built the Mall Cinema theatre there at Wade Hampton Mall. All the men who worked for Reese Construction (where my dad worked) got free passes for themselves and thier families to go to the opening night of the theatre in 1965. The movie, The Yellow Rolls Royce was the first movie played there. I don't remember the movie as I was just 10 but I remember going and feeling like a big shot! "My daddy built this theatre!" For years the Mall Cinema showed $1.00 movies and I went to tons of them when I was young, dating, and in college. A bunch of us would drive over from Clemson to go to moives at the Mall Cinema. It was fun. McAlister Square was the demise of Wade Hampton Mall. Now Bob Jones University uses the mall for a bible school and office complex. Lewis Plaza was on Augusta Road. Mama used to go there to that Belk-Simpson store and the Plaza Drug Store. The closing of the Plaza Lunch Counter closed several years ago made all the local print and television news. There used to be an A&P at Lewis Plaza also. There is still the Plaza Hardware Store there facing Augusta Road It is either an Ace or True Value Hardware store now.

Bell Tower Mall

Let me share this.... since there were a lot of purse snatchings, package stealing, etc. at Bell Tower Mall one of the ledgends that floated around Greenville when Bell Tower Mall was open was a woman went into the ladie's room at Woolco, had a miscarriage, placed the fetus in a Woolco bag, and placed the bag in the parking lot. A man ran up to grab the bag, looked inside, screamed and fainted and was still passed out cold when the police arrived. Truth or ledgend? Either way I always thought that was a great story!

That's like the woman who was taking a package of her poor dead little dog to be buried, and was robbed on the subway, or some similar scenario. The thief got his surprise big time! I've wanted to have a wrapped Christmas gift in my unlocked car, loaded with presents from my cats!

Ohhhh! Tootsie Rolls! :o)

Have you ever seen one of the litter box cakes? It's a typical "dirt cake" with in a litter box (lined, of course) layered with graham cracker crumbs and dotted with rolled up tootsie rolls served with a sanitized litter scoop.

It really is...and it's good too! I don't know why I can't post anything today. Google "litterbox cake" and you'll find all versions and pictures of the recipe for litter box cake. You can also find recipes for dirt cake which you serve in a sanitized flower pot with gummy worms. My sister used to make dirt cake for our family dinners years ago. I begged my sister to make a litter box cake because my brother had a very "weak" stomach and I wanted to laugh at him when he would run outside and start throwing up thinking we were stupid enough to serve Callie and Big Baby's litter box for dessert. I would have caught "heck" for that but it would have been worth it!

Oh Jim,

You're so bad! I have had any litterbox cake, but it sounds like a hoot. Maybe we should make one for the office next time we have a fuunction!
