Today I noticed that the wonderful touch panel on the Neptune 7500 gas dryer wasn't responding to touch correctly. Random selections, mostly none at all. Had to press really hard and way off center to get anything to work.
After consulting one web site, I decided to take a peek. Removing the control panel wasn't difficult, even though I chose the more difficult way to do it (I put it back on the easier way). One complication is that this location has the dryer venting down through the floor, which means the dryer can't be moved away from the wall, which is a scant 1.5 inches or so away from the back of the machine (tight fit in a laundry closet). Sure enough, all it took was to remove the ribbon connector between the touchpad and the control board, move it up and down on the pins a few times, and then the touch panel started working perfectly. Great news, because otherwise I'd be scrapping the entire machine due to the cost of replacement parts. While I was at it, I noticed that the beeper wasn't working. In fact, I don't really remember the last time it did work. Seemed to me it WAS working before I called in about three years ago on the last few months of the seven year extended service agreement and had the dimming LCD display replaced. I pulled the control board out and noticed that one of the soldered connections to the inner membrane of the beeper was loose. I wasn't sure if I could fix it, but I got out the trusty temperature controlled soldering iron and put a dab of fresh solder on the join. Now it looked like it was holding. Sure enough, it got its beep back. Which is nice, because it lets me know when a wrinkle prevent cycle is over. Otherwise it will just keep on tumbling on non-heated air flow, which is great for preventing wrinkles but hard to tell when the load is ready without looking at the screen. I figure the connection got knocked loose when the service guy replaced the LCD screen, and I didn't actually notice the absence of sound until now. Anyway, the hour or so I spent fixing this probably saved me about $300 in parts and labor. Or the cost of a new washer/dryer set (I've had my own on the Electrolux pair, but that's another story). So the Neptune set lives on to meet the daily laundry needs of this household. |
