A friend of mine just closed on a house last Friday and after hearing the descriptions  of the "stepping back into 1968" house, I had to see it.  The bathrooms appear to be pretty much intact as built in '68 but the kitchen and laundry had been updated back in the 80's and 90's so weren't super-vintage but still very interesting.

First we'll begin in the kitchen.  Ignoring the almond GE-built Kenmore branded side-by-side, we have this kinda cool range.  Built by Raytheon in '94 for the Amana brand line.  Two halogen elements (front), self cleaning and other than a bit of black touch-up paint, it's in really nice condition.

Dishwasher - KitchenAid built by Whirlpool.  There was a water-softener in the house so the machine is in pretty good condition.

Looked pretty nice on the outside, but as the money-shot reveals, there's something wrong here!  WTF??

The top rack is OK but for some of the standard side-rail-rot syndrome that so many of this era suffer from.   I imagine the lower rack was pretty bad and they found or bought this as a replacement for the "oh, that'll do to sell the house".  I don't think I have a good upper rack for this machine but it will likely be replaced anyway.

Intermission stop on the way to the basement - check out these sweet air vent covers!  They look like tiny appliance panels - or window air conditioner panels.  "Flowmatic"  Gotta love it!

Finally!  The laundry room!

We're going to ignore the 18 month old Roper BOL dryer and focus on the Amana...

This is from about 1982'ish, the first of the Amana branded laundry products made by Raytheon-Speed Queen.

Money shot!

There would have likely been a fabric softener dispenser that fit on the top of the agitator but that is missing.  Good thing I have one since this machine will be making the trip home soon.  My friend already has a washer & dryer set (DD Whirlpool Catalyst & Senseon pair) so doesn't need these.  I have no use for the dryer but that washer is one my aunt bought new so it will be fun to play with.  You can sort of make out the shine in the porcelain basket (Amana didn't get the stainless baskets right away, that was a SQ exclusive) and there is no evidence of rust anywhere, all functions worked as they should - just needs a good cleaning!

ooo.. Now there is an interesting stove. And those vents are very cool "retro-high tech" looking.

I assume no "smaller appliances" of the cleaning-by-means-of-electricity type? :P

Sweet sweet Amana appliances! The range is surprising clean, and the washer is surpurb. Recently I saw a 1980/1981 perf tub vintage Speed Queen behind a dealer in Harvest. So mint the marketing promo sticker was still on the lid. Unfortunately it was so buried behind DD Whirlpools that the neighbors would have called the cops due to the noise of trying to release it from the junk!

Can't wait to see some action shots from this girl. Thankfully this one is as nice as that SQ.

Where's the vacuum?

You say house full of interesting appliances, yet you deliberately leave out the vacuum pictures. Hmmph!   Tongue out

The Flowmatic heat/AC vent is really unique. Never seen one them before. Looks like there is some kind of seasonal setting for heat/cool.

Another Range Question

Gansky,

Does the Amana range have a self-cleaning oven? It is hard to read the words on the panel display. Thanks for posting the photos!

I was hoping maybe there would have been a central vac.

No worries. :-)

AMANA SELF-CLEANING ELECTRIC RANGE

combo52's profile picture

These were always neat looking ranges, they were originally a Corning design that Amana got when they bought Cornings cooking appliance devision. They were not without thier problems however but very cool just the same.

Love the solid tub and speckles, can't to play! That 80's ORANGE was so prevalent back then, it was a knee jerk to the 70's avocado craze!

Central vacs are pretty rare around here - not sure why when it would be so nice in so many homes.

It is a self-cleaning range, we didn't try that while I was cleaning it - it was already clean so we didn't bother but it did seem to have a pretty accurate oven.

Post# 506288 , Reply# 23   3/23/2011 at 21:11 (4,807 days old) by washernoob ()

Indeed central vacs are pretty uncommon. My architecture teacher actually discussed that fact. He said they were probably the best innovative major appliance for a home. "and you dont need to drag out your eurE!ka" as he said! Best teacher in my school! He said out of the dozens of houses he has built for clients, most didn't really want a Central vacuum.

My grandparents house was quite surprising to me, for them to not have a central vacuum. The house was one of the most expensive, and high end houses when it was built in 1915, for Tom Dennison, who was definitely not short on change, if you know what i mean.

The shear size of the house is what is bizarre about it though. Many other mansions for the time had them.

That washer is TOL, or at least close to it. Shouldn't the tub be SS? I never liked the needlenose look of the agitator cap...

AMANA WASHERS

combo52's profile picture

This style was the first Amana washers and dryers the washer is not TOL and I don't believe any Amanas at this point had SS tubs. These washers like SQs were noisy sort of average machines of no particular greatness. They tented to have a lot of durability problems with pumps center seals, belts and transmissions.
