The sun is shining brightly and it’s nice and warm, so back to the work shop for some real work, I’ve taken advantage of the un-seasonally warmouth.

First thing fixed is the garage door which the springs broke on during the winter and it smacked me on the head. Then it striping off the cabinet ready to take to the paint shop.

Remove all the captive nuts, will have to be careful putting them back on, as they can dig into the paint.

Hi Lee, it's so interesting watching you strip the old girl. I have always been into Zanussi, Bendix, Miele, Bosch etc but due to afew other collectors have got into older Hotpoint and Hoover machines and love them and know have some in the collection. Looking forward to seeing the end result, good luck.

OMG Lee!

This is going to be a grand restoration!!!
Please keep us updated every step of the way.

Thanks for the deconstruction views - particularly useful as there is a possibility that at least one 18-series in the fold might be subjected to a similar sort of rebuild to your 1851/03.
Be fantastic to be able to use this thread as the equivilent of a Haynes Manual of Hotpoint 18-series Overhaul.

Not going to hijack this thread but it seemes that things have been a bit 18-series over the last couple of weekends, as last weekend saw my dad working a wonder and turning this....

The colour is Peugeot Midnight Blue and we purchased it from halfords. The colour is what Mike used on his 1509/10 Liberator toploader with great results.

Though disturbed me a great deal when first applied as, on immediate application, it looks rather aquamarine green when wet.

In the future though, I will be using this shade on mine and Rob's 1701/01 dryer and my 1509/05. I am really happy with the finished result.

Anyways......roll on your 1851/03 Lee - more, more, more!

Cheers
paul

Instruction manual cover for the 1851.

Will try and photograph the entire manual for you Lee (not that its much different from any other Libertor 18-manual) and will add here over the coming weeks, as your machine progresses.

Does Your Washer tell You Its A "Liberator"

chestermikeuk's profile picture
It always baffles me when people scribble all over the front of a lovely colour manual, when most have a few pages blank at the back for such info.

Or is it just that us collectors want them pristine??

I do like to see scribbles from the owners though, sort of gives us a little glimpse into the life of the machines..

p.s, the number now sends you to a call centre, "Press 1 for Gaskets, 2 for Motors, 3 for instructions on "How to Wash" and 4 if you sadly own any other brand!!!

I know what you mean about the graffiti on the manual covers - kind of grates a bit.

But, as you yourself mention, its nice to have some of the history of the machine.

I did like it when we removed the back of Mathew's 3226 Keymatic, to find repair updates and notes scrawled on the frame of the machine.
I think Richard's 1504 toploader has repair notes scrawled on its insides too.

Thanks chaps.

Paul you can hijack all you like if it anything to do with old Hotpoint’s
I’ve come over all 18-series starry eyed and it's bloody good.

When are you going to plug that machine in and try it out, come on I’m getting impatience.

A teaser for someone else, is there going to be a separate thread for another 18-series, ho, goody goody. Gone all starry eyed again.

Manual wow that’s great thanks.

As you can see from the photos the rust is much worse than I first thought in the base plate, and the bottom edges of the cabinet are quite bad as well, not penetrating rust, just on the surface and it’s all flaky, I certainly cant do it myself, well I could but it would look ten times worse than it is now, I just don’t have the patience to spray paint anything, I want it done now and end up with runs and dribbles, no good at all, so I don’t mind paying a professional to do it. It’s a shame she has to live in the garage.

I’ve had a busy weekend out in the work shop, Saturday the project machine had a little up-grade and I washed 4 loads it plus Sunday stripping the 1851/03 lets hope the good warm weather is going to last for some time.

Liberator 1851 Manual

I aim to collect manuals and other pieces of literature in either digital or paper form. Unfortunatley for me I'm having bother finding manuals or brochures. I also see that the 1851 that manual belonged to must have lasted into the 90's. Why so hard to find then?

James.

Time to own up!

Hiya Lee.

I plugged it in on the Friday night that I took it to my folks for the respray.
Only on spin and without any water though.

It has been fitted with a 100% original Hotpoint Peterborough built pump, totally different to what we all know as Hotpoint pumps which are sourced from an external supplier.
This original pump is possibly of the same type that was fitted to the Hotpoint 1600 - I will have to get a photo of it to show the differences (assuming that visually there are some).
Its a lot louder and rumbly than what we are used to, though the absence of water and it being bone dry probably accentuated the noise.

It will get tested soon though.

Paul
p.s let us know how it goes with the powder coaters. I am really intrigued to see the standard that is achived, as I have two machines that could do with the same treatment.

To tide us over, I thought I would post a piccy of one of the more obscure Liberators, in the form of the 1824 two button jobby. Was only in production for a year from 1978 into 1979, when it was replaced by the 18340...

Hotpoint 1824...

Actually quite nice for a Bottom of the Range machine. If I ever come across a Liberator over here I'd say it would be that model as it would just about fit the typical budget then. If I did I wouldn't mind it at all. No matching dryer for it though. Unless I got a white door for a 1701. I'm off school for 4 weeks now and I hope something good will happen.

James.

Hi James.

Owning a couple of doors off the 1824 and best buy models 1827 Super electronic and 1700 dryer, to find a white door would be a miracle.
Just like with the powder drawer fascias and any white fasciad machine built in the 80s, the doors yellow something chronic.

The one below is a 1700 dryer and is a goodun, when compared to the doors I have.
I think the fascia sticker would have been white as well at one time...

You have a decent spares stash I take it? That wouldn't consist of two Hotpoint Supermatic spinner motors would it? I'm having terrible bother findinh one for the spinner and one for the 146* ;)

James.

Fraid not James.

Twin tubs and top loader machines are a swine to store, as you cant really stack things on them or stack them on other machines.
The awkwardness of the machines also filters down to their spare parts, which are a pain to harbour too.

As a result, I tend not to hold such spares myself.

Paul

Shame...

I'm off school for 4 weeks and I intended to get the motors, other spares, machines from "irishmark" (but I think me and him had a little fall out over nothing, I NEED AN AGONY AUNT ON THAT ONE LOL) and hopefully finding something along the way. Also some adjustments were made to the Wash House.

Ah Liberators... I dream... What a nice sight to have my very own one up in that shed... OR 1600/1830?

Full frontal...

I've never heard the like!! Great machine though Paul - I'm sure you'll raise the bar in terms of detail when it's done! And the tub graffiti seems to have been a feature on Hotpoint top-loaders in the UK - every single one that Rich and I have had between us has a litany of repairs in marker-pen on the poly-prop tubs. Inevitable of the TLs it goes pump, clutch, pump, clutch every couple of years!!

Lee - I'm very impressed with the detailed approach to dismantling - very thorough! Great to see a few of these machines surviving with so much (including the outlet hoses which always seem to disappear...). The self-leveller is a nice concept but just as bad on the top-loaders to work on. IIRC they fitted that on all 'high spin speed' models...what did the competition do (the Oovaah people)?

James - Hotpoint spin motors are probably still available if you have the cash, but equally they come up on ebay every now and again and most UK sellers will ship to Ireland if you ask them. Otherwise look out for a late supermatic - the spin motor will transfer over.

Mike - such a tease with that Liberator pic...

Well - preview vid is uploaded!

Hi Richard.

Yep, Zanussi provided two machines to the Hotpoint range.

The 1823 was always the runt of the litter and was always the machine at the back of any promotional shots, ivariably with the 1701 dryer stacked on top of it.
Basic machine - no option buttons and a max spin speed of 380rpm!

The 1826 is the version that myself and rob own. Intermediate machine with 'super wash' and 'economy load' buttons, its spin was a middle of the range 520rpm.

The 1828 was totl in the 1976 to 1978 front loader range, with the 3 option buttons and 800rpm spin.

Hi david.

Hope you have settled into your new place ok.

I too am impressed by Lee's screw charts - a great idea and much better than the pyrex bowl that I invariably end up using.
Try so hard to put certain types of screws in particular parts of the bowl, but they all end up getting mixed up.

I’m in a very bad mood, powder coaters in Leominster I was going to using have let me down.

“Ho sorry we can’t fit anything that big in our small chemical tank to strip the old paint off, best find a back street car body shop to wet spray paint it”

Bloody back street car body shop, don’t you realise this is the cream of British made washing machines from the early 70’s and requires only the best you absolute philistine. Bloody back street car bloody body shop.

So I have found another one in Ledbury who have quoted £30 chemical stripping and £50 powder coat to a factory finish, so I will be going out there some time next week.

And my computer is about to be sent out of the closed window if it dose not start to work bloody well right in a minute, I want a fag now, but I don’t smoke anymore do I.

Both fine machines and cant wait for some footage of a full wash.

Not sure about the white door on the 1824 it just doesn’t look quite right, I would not turn it away if one came my way thought.

“What do you mean program not responding, you will respond when my foot enter your screen, now pull you self together NOW”.

Screw chart, well I get a bit inpatient when I loos things and then loos my temper, the garage door it testament to that as my foot imprint is still there, and this dam computer is going to end up with the same treatment soon.

“Program shutting down, I tell you what to do you piece of sh 1 t.”

I’m off to sit in a dark room, hopefully Norton 360 can sort this stupid computer out or my fist just might have to, I’m not violent at all.

It won’t shut down now, keeps coming back to the web page, plug out of the wall then, you may not hear from for a day or too if it won’t reboot tomorrow.

Ahhh Lee.

The frustration of the powder coaters. Its only a temporary blip I am sure and I understand the frustration of wanting to get something done and finding obsticles in your path.
I am joining you in the frustration, as I want to see your machine sparkling too.
But we must all be patient - will all work out right in the end, I am sure.

Re the computer - my computer is 10 years old now and is slllloooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwhttp://www. It can also get even slllooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr than that too and it does your head in. Sits there chunnering away and have only asked it to open windows explorer!
Just walk away for a bit and do something else.
I have tried hitting it, but it just sits there whilst my fist hurts, so who's won!?

Age might not be your problem though, so get your anti virus software run and see what it flags up.

Paul

Yep - that machine is the one from Manchester.
I cant wait to be able to introduce it to its new owner who, subject to it working all ok, I am sure will oblige with the videos of it - either done by himself or by me with his permission.

The white door 1824 - certainly does look a wee bit weird for sure. Like you - would never turn one down and would probably replace the door with chrome, cause I seriously doubt that the white door would still be white! Methinks it would be a lovely shade of creamy yellow at best.
Then again, my conscience would say 'keep original', so it would no doubt head to my parents, accompanied by a can of white car paint.

On the subject of obscure Liberators, I did tonight what I have been meaning to do for ages and took photos of the exploded diagrams for the designed, but never built, Hotpoint 1840 Liberator.
Cold fill only and with one lonely door release button, I have doctored a photo of a 1850 to show what it wold have looked like.
I am pretty sure that Hotpoint wouldnt have given it the white door treatment, that they meeted out to the 1824. Nevertheless, even with a chrome door, it certainly is a very plain machine...

Hotpoint 1824...

I actually quite like this dinky machine as much as the 1848 now... I hope I find either one or the other over here. Freecycle do your thing! *crosses everything* If I found a 1824 and already had a 1701 I would keep the white/cream door and replace the one on the 1701 with a white one to match! "Oh James how could you!" The Superbuy 1700 etc. would be nice to but they lack purple doors? Does anybody have a picture of the whole first Superbuy range? They are really rare?

James.

Hi James.

The first Superbuy range are rather elusive.

A photo of the 1700 dryer is earlier in the thread and its compact stablemate, I attach below, in the form of the 1731 Super Dryer.

As for the 1827 Super Electronic, unless anyone has one, a photograph has yet to surface. I do own a powder drawer facia off one though - its as per the normal liberator style, was once white but has yellowed and bears the words 'Super Electronic' in italics.

Paul

So its possibly a 1823 or if not its def a Zanussi or Electra or Electrolux variant- id love to see a GL2 again as my Auntie had one (paired with a Creda 275).
Defiantly worth saving!!!

Yellow plastic...

Hi Paul,

I think I heard somewhere that rainwater can work magic on yellowed plastics. Might be something to do with the minerals in it?

It's doesn't look like I'm getting anything now but it's ok. There's nothing that he had that I couldn't find locally. I guess it's one of those finds that never make their way to you. I'm only 16 so I can find anything I can dream of yet.

James.

Evening all, not much to say other than have a great weekend.

As you can see the computer is working this evening, Norton 360 says it has found threats and fixed them, You dirty little slut of a computer, but it's running a bit slow, maybe I need a new one.

You would have thought Hotpoint would have made a few of the 1840’s

Lee

1840's

Appeared to have got very close to the production stage. I'd say only a handful of prototypes existed and of course got lost after the clearout.

Lee try leaving your PC overnight to defragment, same to you Paul. It works wonders. Also try disc clean up. Both accessible from the control panel.

James.

Up-date
On Thursday I went to Ledbury and delivered the panels to the powder coaters, so they are now in there safe hands, all the staff seemed friendly people. So I have just got to Waite for the call to go and collect some time next week or the week after.

a bit of a difference...

As you may know I am very fond of the liberator especialy the c's. When I get 5 minuetes I tend to make little card washers. I have 3-4 shoeboxes full of them. This time I have made a liberator washer and dryer but the card colours are a wee bit different.

enjoy

Chris.

While I’m waiting for the panels to come back from the powder coaters I have spent some time treating the rust on the lip of the outer tub.

I’m on a few days holiday, and have had enough nagging from her-indoors “the lawn needs mowing; you could vacuum the house, are you going to do anything” so I did some thing very useful, was glad to have some piece and quite out in the workshop.

Next a rubdown and a treatment of rust remover.

Poor photo, but this stuff is great, the rust turns blue.

Then a quick clean up.

Dried and then the enamel repair treatment applied, her-indoors may find she is a makeup brush missing, it was just the right size for the job, ho well at least the nagging will be for something now.

The enamel is black, but you wont be able to see it as it is covered by the boor boot, I have coated the entire lip all the way round to help prevent any further decay.

That it for now, I’m hoping the panels are ready some time next week.
