Okay, some of you may have seen my thread in the Super section about my plumbing issue. Well, now we have solved the problem, we had a plumber come out and fix the problem, apparently there was a dead baby squirrel in our plumbing for about 5 years. (Hurk!!!) Anyway, me and my mom had to clean the basement laundryroom today and my mom threw up it was so gross, then after we were done she cried because she hated that her clothes got washed in the same room. So, now I am going to solve (most) of her rpoblems with the laundryroom. She has said in the past that she would like to have a washer and dryer in her bathroom and I intend to do just that, me and my stepdad are going to plan a removal of the bathtub, replace it with a shower, and install a stackable washer and dryer. It shouldn't be too hard considering that there is plumbing in the bathroom and that the unit will be sitting one floor up directly over where the dryer is so it won't be hard to run gas and venting to the dryer seeing as how we will be getting rid of the bathtub anyway there will be a hole in the floor to run plumbing, gas, and venting. But, the reason I post this thread in the Deluxe section is I am wondering what a good stackable washer and dryer would be. I have already discussed what machine mom is looking for with her and she made it clear that she doesn NOT want a fronload washer. So that is out of the question, plus we will have a Spin-X right next to it so, all I need to know is a good toploading machine wash performance wise. We were thinkng about getting the stacked Maytag with the orbital transmission. Any thoughts? Thanks!!!!

Re: Stacked Top-Load Washer/Dryer:

Hi! Jamie, I would certainly go with the Maytag "Orbital" Unit. I've thought about looking into getting one probably in a 220-Volt Electric for the Dryer part, so I could place it next to either my Lady-K Combo or my Gibson Washer/W-Westy Gas Dryer Stack Set. What are the Washer and Dryer Brands that your Mother uses at this time, does she like Maytag's? If not, I would go with the WP/Kenmore Unitized Stack Machines.

I'm wanting to have another 220-Volt Outlet installed in my Garage behind where my Washer sits, so I can have 2-Electric Dryers of Combos running at the same time, or I can have 1-Electric and 1-Gas and 1-Electric running at the same time.

Good Luck with the Tub/Shower project, allowing you to be able to install the Stack Unit in the Bath Room...

Peace and Happy Maytag Unit Washing for your Mother, Steve

I'd say go with either the Maytag or Whirlpool 27" stack units. Both are full-sized, 220V units and have a reliable reputation, though from what I've seen the Whirlpool has a much larger tub. The Maytag's tub is only standard-capacity (14-16 lbs); not the same size as my Orbital machine. If this will end up being the main washer for the house, then the Whirlpool is probably your best bet.

Oops!

Didn't realize you were looking for a gas dryer...here's the gas version of the 27" Whirlpool I mentioned above.

Response: NEWSFLASH => You brush your teeth 3 feet (1 meter) away from the dirtiest spot in the house, the toilet.

How clean is that tootbrush, when you really think about it? After all- odors are airbborne particles. When the bathroom stinks after a major purge, just what is it that you think is in the air and will settle on the toothbrushes? Using scented candles or spray to cover the odor? Guess where those poisons are landing? In your mouth as well.

Sorry to be so harsh, but nothing has changed but what she knows and/or perceives. IMHO => Disinfect the room with lysol liquid (brown glass jar) and try to get over it.

For five years?

That's absolutely impossible. A bird dissolves much faster.

Jamie, Big George's Home Appliance Mart(say that 3 times fast)on W. Stadium in AA, is a great place to shop for your new washer. Last of the independents around here, they are very helpful and knowledgeble. They won't bull**it or hound you like Sears. Have fun, maybe your mom will like the stainless Askos sitting in a kitchen display in the back of the store.

First, don't rip out the bath tub until you've checked with Mom that she never uses it. If she comes home one day to find it missing, there may be hell to pay for that "surprise."

Second, get her involved in the project, for example by shopping for the stacked set and choosing one she likes (with your inputs on technical quality issues).

Third, time to re-frame her feeling about squirrels, with some upbeat stories about how darn cute they are, for example even when they're hogging the bird feeder.

Re. The Toilet: Bacteria can be transmitted via water droplets in the air, but these usually settle on the floor close to the toilet (guys: sit down when you pee!) (everyone: close the lid when you flush). Bad smells (from poop), by themselves, do not usually carry bacteria or toxins. Bad smells also don't escape from poop once it's underwater. I could go into this stuff in clinical detail, but if you're really interested you can probably find the relevant information on the web.

Toothbrushes can get hazardous if they're allowed to remain wet for lengthy periods of time (mold) or kept in the dark (more mold) or kept in a holder that allows the water from each one to come into contact with others (contagious disease risk). Store your toothbrushes so they get light & air circulation, and can dry out easily. If someone in the house is sick, they should store theirs in a separate location and also probably use a separate tube of toothpaste.

Shared drinking glasses are a serious contagion hazard.

Shower curtains are difficult to clean and can become a contagion hazard if someone in the house is sick, and a mold/bacteria hazard if they stay wet for lengthy periods of time and can't dry out.

stacked washer/dryer

If it was up to me My choice would be the Frigidaire with the 3/4 hp motor and the 5 vaine agitator this machine has plenty of power and Electorlux has made Frigidaire put steel gears in the transmissions so it should last for years with out trouble. Be sides Frigidaire should have a better price on it than Maytag or Whirlpool/Kenmore. Just thought you would like to know. Thank for listening. Dan
