I started a new thread with the washer I brought home from the recesses of the Iowa guy's warehouse. I've been to that place six times and am still finding new and interesting things and have a couple things yet to go back for.

I brought this washer home today, made by a company we'd never heard of before. Can anyone guess what brand this machine is from the model/serial tag? It is indeed an automatic washer.

Well,...Whirlpool has been in Michigan for well over 50 yrs.

Maybe too obvious though. Can't wait to find out.

Ohh good riddle Greg, I never heard of GR Manufacturing before, the model # looks like a Philco Model but 11AMPS is a lot of power, even a Unimatic is rated at 7 AMPS. Almost makes me wonder if it has a heater of some sort? I probably would have to guess a Franklin or Beam machine.

I love a good mystery!

I've never heard of the GR Manufacturing Company before and I agree that 11.0 amps is a lot of power. That sounds almost like a vacuum cleaner, a dishwasher or maybe even an early portable dryer? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

I noticed that there's a zip code as part of GR Manufacturing Company's address, so that means that our mystery machine was made after zip codes were introduced. (I'm going to date myself, but I can remember when we didn't have zip codes.) According to wikipedia.org (link below) non-mandatory zip codes were introduced on July 1, 1963 and became mandatory for bulk mailers in 1967.

Could it be...

A search for E12745 brings up an identifier like:

‘E12745’’ — ELECTROLUX HOME PRODUCTS. NORTH AMERICAN, DIV OF WHITE CONS. INDS INC.

Perhaps it is a vacuum.

Is it one of those "Marquette" washers...I remember looking at the "Janney Semple Hill & Co." scans and thought I saw something "GR" on there.

Here's another hint... You guys are getting close, but what BRAND is the machine? The manufacture date is September 1969.

Well if it's an 18-pounder then it could quite possibly be the Norge design. I've seen that lettering and company before somewhere but can't quite put my finger on it...

I might have to go with Bradford, also. But there is also Hoover which if I remember was a rebranded Easy

Guessing Game

I'm going to guess Norge or Kelvinator or even possibaly (Speed Queen?) But If my memory serves correctly From working at Montgomery Wards Some of our washers came from Grand Rapids, so will stick with Norge or Kelvinator.

But that doesn't fall under the "unknown brand" category, so the mystery remains...

Greg's really giving our heads a workout! ;-)

Austin, Greg told us that the company that made it is unknown, not that we don't know the name on the tag of the machine.

Post# 90292 , Reply# 25   10/23/2005 at 14:24 (6,759 days old) by westytoploader ()

Oops!! Thanks Louis for reminding me...so the company is unknown, not the brand!!

I was watching the Convention 2002 DVD and Jason zoomed in on a 60's Norge. Lo and behold, there was "Heavy Duty Washer" in that same lettering as this. Maybe a little reveal will solve the mystery? ;-)

Kelvinator is the winner!!

Here is the new washer, not terribly exciting for a vintage washer but I thought it might be a curious machine to see running. It's a dirty mess inside and needs a little tweaking in the motor start switch and a pump rebuild, but it will work eventually. This is a very strange filter/dispenser, some of you may remember this from pics I posted ages ago. There is a small hole that is kept closed with a small ball bearing to hold the contents during the wash cycle. During the first spin, the ball rides up the channel and opens the hole so when the machine stops spinning, the softener pees down into the washtub for the rinse cycle.

Wow...cool machine! Would be fun to see in action! I thought it was a Norge-designed machine at first (hence the message) until I saw the angel-winger. Didn't realize WCI used a filter pan...but now I remember the coppertone Kelvinator/Gibson ad. That lidswitch sure is interesting...takeoff on Kenmore? And if you ask me, the control panel (the timer especially) resembles a Norge as well as the lid. And I thought there wouldn't be any indexing because of a "clunking" tub brake! ;-)

Greg, you and Steve take the cake!

His Maytag, your Kelvinator! I want to see it in action so bad. You know how that goes!

Wonderful and I am sure we will have a complete update as time permits of the overhaul!!!

The first pic with that unique filter pan/softner dispenser gave it away to me immediately. A similar machie has been a POD (ad) b4 and I remember seeing the Tide ads in magazines growing up. I like the 12-o'clock filter nozzzel location better than the subsequent GE's moving to 2 o'clock.

I think its a Franklin

This Franklin washer design, not the console is the match to the Hamilton dryer in the Wisk, "ring-around-the-collar" ad in the video archives.

Not a bad machine I think. There are not holes in the botom of the tub - so it appears. That seems strange.

Ohh!!

I love it love it!

That has to be one of the sexiest agitators. I enjoyed Nates action shots immenselly.

Wasnt their a machine like this that had a ribbed tub? I would like to see that.

AHHHHH

My great grandmother's Marquette was the same insides. Angel wing agitator and all. Hope you get it working.

Love the Kelvinator

I too thought at first when I saw it, it was a Norge but now that I have seen it I remember a machine similar at my back door neighbors in Hershey, Ne. The Machine was a Coranado from Gambles and was built by G.E. which had the fliterflo pan on top of the agitator similar to your Kelvinator with the angel wing agitator. As I remember it had good roll over action on it but with a stationary tub. Thanks for a good riddle Gansky1. Your fellow Nebraskan. Dan

It was produced by GR Mfg. in 1969 - stamped on the frame of the machine.

I did some checking on GR Mfg. Company and found they still exist in Greeville, Michigan and are producing refrigerators for...you guessed it, Electrolux.

I'll be..... I remember that in the 1970 washer review of CR, they mentioned the Gibson, Kelvinator, Hamilton and possibly Wizard as being basically the same machine. It seemed there were a multitude of annoying problems with those machines during the tests - one wouldn't run at low speed because of a miswired motor, the transmission seal on another opened and spewed oil and the filter spout on another was aimed so most of the water completely missed the filter. I think what they said was -"they are basically good machines but our experience indicates they might be more trouble prone than others". ...
