Hello,
I am new to this form and I am hoping that You can help me identify the year of the stove that came with my house. I want to repair the small oven and am trying to 1. locate parts if available 2. Find out if it will be hard to repair.

The Model number is 628-9497315 (I believe the manufacturer was Kelvinator)

Also, the right oven is self cleaning and the clock say's "automatic" on it.

Thanks,
atomranch

What parts are needed?

I need a new thermostat and door seal/gasket for the small oven. The oven runs full blast and will not shut off. The selector switch changes selections (upper and lower heating element) with no problem so I do no believe it is that part. Also, I have been trying to figure out how old this oven is. The house was built in 1958 and I was wondering if the oven was from that same time period.

The serial number is 181384 I read that sometimes one of the numbers will indicate the year of the oven. Not sure which one however. The oven is self cleaning so I believe it is not original to the house. Could be wrong though.

The diagrams at SearsPartsDirect.com aren't good quality but the small oven door gasket is part number 1303777 if I'm interpreting correctly.  Says NLA.

Both thermostats are also listed NLA.  Part numbers 1307902 and 1307472 (can't determine which is large or small oven).  I'd figure there's a generic replacement that would work.

Interesting what pieces are listed as available.&bnsp; Of five choices for the rangetop (different colors, presumably), one is listed as "contact customer service for availability" and one is stated as "in stock."

To the best of my knowledge, the Frigidaire 40" range currently being sold (model #FFEF4015LW) is essentially the same as the Kenmore you show. Originally made by Kelvinator, these ranges have been sold under various other names including Kenmore, Whirlpool and GE (after they stopped making their own). You may want to check with a Frigidaire parts distributor to see if the parts you need are available.

I would guess your range was made sometime between 1966 and 1975. Self cleaning ranges were not being manufactured in 1958.

My Grandmother had that same stove in the 80's, in coppertone brown, with matching fridge. Actually looked quite lovely in her wood panelled kitchen. I had the same range, in the same color, but the 30 inch version, a few years ago.. They cook very well, with nice even heating ovens, and as I remember, there were generic thermostats available when I needed one for my 30 inch version.

40" KM RANGE

It does sound like the thermostat is at fault, a generic thermostat could probably be installed by a competent repair person. The range would date from the late 1960s- about 1972 after 1972 convenience outlets were removed from all gas and electric ranges under a new UL rule that was very much agreed to by the range manufactories, it saved them money.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for all of the information. I looked up parts on the newer version made by Frigidaire and discovered that I would need to change the inner door panel to use the newer style door gasket. With the cost of the thermostat (rebuilt or generic) it would cost me more that I believe the stove is worth. My best estimate now is around 400 for parts. The large oven works really well and all of the burners as well as the self cleaner work. So right now I am just going to use it as is until it becomes replacement time.

Thanks

atomranch

40' KENMORE ELECTRIC RANGE

One thing to keep in mind is that the large well insulated oven uses little or no more electricity than the small poorly insulated side oven for most cooking operations that take more than 30 minutes.

I'd do the repair if it was my range.  Your unit looks to be in very good condition per the picture.  A new 40" self-cleaning range likely would cost a lot more than $400.

And your model does not have any electronic parts.  Which means it will most likely outlast a new replacement that has electronic controls.  I'd seerious reconsider that $400 exenditure.
