My mother was asking me if I knew of anyone that had any Frigidaire "poppy" colored appliances that they would sell...I told her that it was probably getting harder and harder to find especially -fridges...in fact I would love to find a poppy washer /dryer but I know there are so many like myself looking for the same...comments, suggestions or ideals?

Tony

I still see poppy on occasion, I have a poppy Frigidaire 'fridge in my garage. Scrapped a 30" poppy electric rane about 4 months ago.

Best bet is to find the appliance that works for you, and have it painted.

But here is my 1975 Poppy Red Frigidaire 1-18 Model WCD Washer. I love it and use it frequently.

I'm wondering why Poppy Red wasn't available on all washer models like most other colors?

I took this detail about 1973 models that Peter posted in another thread. It seems that only the 1-18 Custom Deluxe model could have been ordered with this color that year. Was it also true for other years? Was it an error/omission in the literature?

Also, here's an ad showing a single speed red W3-24 GMini and the chart above doesn't mention it was available on other models than the 2 speed W3-224.

1974!

I thought it was 1973, since my GMini washer has the same model number and it's from 1973.

WHY POPPY WASN'T AVAILABLE ON ALL MODELS

combo52's profile picture

Red had a very limited appeal so it would not have made sense to go to the cost of making it in every model. Since only Frigidare and Gibson even offered Poppy there was very little demand.

Actually the 1973 and 1974 models were the same. My Aunt bought her set in April, 1974. Hers was almost a match to WI3T except it had 2 speed instead of 4. The following year they changed the control panel styling.

Still bizarre that the red cabinets (which were the same as those on other models) could just be ordered on the Custom Deluxe and not on the Imperial and Custom Imperial models.

But I have a 1974 poppy pair of Custom Imperials

Of course I changed the cabinets from a mid-line pair, but they are beautiful, the washer even has the window lid.

Nice range John. Can you tell me when ranges started using fuses for the burners and oven in the US like they did in Canada?

SEPARATE OVEN AND TOP ELEMENT FUSES

combo52's profile picture

To my knowledge no US built electric ranges have ever used separate fuses for the individual elements. It is not required here, although I feel that it should be.

I hope someone here goes after this Poppy range, these ranges were built like tanks, it is easy to see why WCI didn't even give a serious thought to continuing to build this range, as they could never have sold it at a completive price.

I thought Poppy was one of the best colors the American appliance industry ever came up with (along with Whirlpool's short-lived Sapphire). But it was introduced at a bad time: GM was just about to unload the Frigidaire brand, and most of the decorator nit-wits were declaring all of those strong appliance colors with shaded edging "gauche" and everyone was moving to safer colors like "almond" (i.e. beige) and white.

One of the things disturbing about going into appliance departments nowadays is that everything, EVERYTHING, is white and gray. Having worked with stainless steel appliances for most of my career I can tell anyone that no surface is harder to keep clean and it is annoyingly un-magnetic. Give me porcelain enamel anyday.

Frigidaire had red appliances (similar to Poppy Red, if not the same color, but without the shading, like on the 24" Laundry Centers and GMini washer/dryer sets of the seventies) since the mid-sixties. I have just seen them in ads however.

Here's a 1966 ad showing red kitchen appliances (I'd love to find a set exactly like this!).

Frigidaire - 1966 (2)

And another one from 1966 showing refrigerators, red is described as "Matador Red".

POPPY APPLIANCES

combo52's profile picture

Frigidare sold poppy appliances almost 10 years before they unloaded the line and in 1976 shaded poppy was changed to a non-shaded color called terra-cotta as were all other shaded colors by agreement by AHAM.

I can only remember one person that ever had the Poppy color appliances, and that was my friend Glenna D. She moved into a house in the late 70's that had a Frigidaire top-freezer refrigerator included.

In 1977 I worked in a hardware store that sold Frigidaire, and none of the display models were in Poppy, nor any of the warehouse stock. If anyone wanted something in that color, it had to be ordered from the distribution center.

In the Frigidaire ad above, I see they were calling Avocado "Tahitian Green". I think that's a much more pleasant name for the shade.

John, do you know when Harvest Gold was changed to a non-shaded color? My 1-18 set is from April/May 1977 and they still have the shading.
