a nice lady such as yourself know anything about Chinese knocking shops, let alone a cheap one? Thank you! for the view of your collection. I am particularly envious of the pre-war Dreft! Lawrence/Maytagbear |

Don't be MaytagBear,
Near as one can figure out the stuff is merely powdered SLS and while indeed milder to one's hands and fabrics than pure soaps of the day, (easier to work with as well), the stuff literally get's up one's nose! Opened one box to launder some delicate vintage linens and whilst measuring out the required amount Dreft dust got everywhere and one went into a sneezing jag at once. Subsequent dealings with this product one wears a face (surgical type) mask. Once the open box is done the lot will remain untouched for awhile. |

it's more for the haute art deco design of the packaging than the actual contents. However, thank you again for the performance review. L/Mb |

I would kill to find a big stash of La France or Blu White powdered bluing. A couple years ago I bought a small box of old detergents at an estate/tag sale and it included an unopened box of Burst. It's performance was good considering the age of the contents, and that it was an early enzyme-based detergent. It also had an opened box of Bold, and an unopened 70's version of Rinso. My sister swiped the box of Oxydol that was included. She's still has it, and uses it very sparingly. |

OH MY ACHING HEART
Circa 1970, fell in love with the scent of towels washed in Dash and Calgon. So long gone, all hope abandoned, and you have BOTH!
Years later it was Gain, such a scent as made in Heaven. Though still available, the original waft is long gone, but not chez vous. You have it all.
You must initiate Vintage, Laundry-Scenting Visitation Teas, Dear Hyacinth.

LaFrance Powder:
Have two NIB boxes (one shown has been opened but used only a tiny bit so far), and several of the smaller early versions. Difference is that the last incarnations sold by Dial LaFrance contained not only OBAs and bluing agents but protein enzymes as well. Having used both really cannot see *that* much of a difference, especially since most modern detergents are LOADED with OBAs to the point wash water almost glows. Woolite Powder: No, it's no longer sold and if one trusts various Internet posts Woolite liquid isn't what it once was either. Cannot remember when it came out and went, but Woolite "Machine/Gentle Wash" powder was designed for laundering woolens and delicates via washing machines (toploaders). Stuff In Crates: Have posted pictures before of that stash. It's nothing but Fels Naptha soap, Lux Flakes, Kirkman's Borax soap, and P&G "White" laundry soap. |

Is for woolens, silks, and other "fine laundry". The powder was the original formula but several years ago Henkel (Germany) switched to liquids.
The powder was meant to be high foaming even for front loaders as to "cushion" the washing action to provide protection to delicate textiles and keep from matting woolens. However since most European frontloaders had dedicated "Woolens" and "Delicates" cycles that used lots of water with minimal tumbles you didn't see that much foaming when properly used. White King Soap: Was not like Fels IIRC, as it didn't contain petrol (naptha), but was simply a white laundry soap one could grate up or otherwise use on wash day. Rinso: From what one understood from posts in resonse to the first time I showed that box, this version of Rinso was towards the last of production before the brand was retired from American shelves. One assumes it was in response to Oxydol and perhaps Tide with Bleach. |

Lever Brothers UK decided to drop Radion (the seventh largest selling brand in GB) in favour of it's sister detergent Surf in the late 1990's. This would explain why the packaging on both sides of the pond are so similar for "Surf" here and "Radion" there.
Later Lever Bros. seemed to have a change of mind and considered briging Radion out of retirement. CLICK HERE TO GO TO Launderess's LINK |

Decided to pull the plug on Radion, so it may have taken until early 2000 for production to truly cease, product to vanish from shelves, etc...
Surf in the United States was sold off by Unilver to IIRC Huish who makes the product for the new owners Sun Products, or something like that. Know the former makes the stuff whilst the latter owns the brand name. Even though one has several open boxes of detergent already opened am that eager to try the stuff may crack open a box. |

The UK Radion of the 1990s had a lovely soapy "bubblegum" fragrance. Does the Surf version smell the same? |
