Much experience in this forum. Thanks to all those who share their tricks of the trade to help greenhorns, like myself, restore a piece of Americana.

Paint removal from Norge

Great photos. Much history.. I need help finding an age on a new find! Im also liking the fact that the item does not match exactly anything i can find on the web... similar.. i figured they were so poor they did not contine the line or this may be a rare find. Thanks for any input. It is a Norge wringer washer.. has 5 casters model. I saw the pristine version in a couple pics. This unit has a elegant, fine checkere design (24" long and 8 inches deep aprox)maybe turquoise with gold... hard to tell as it does have some unfortuneate paint accidently covering a third of the unit, from a trailer painter as it sat in the corner of his shop. (black but may be able to restore) any help with year, info on the unit and perhaps a technique to gently remove some paint? Thanks Jim Also want to test it... without causing damage, so a heads up on Do's and Donts is appreciated.

Yes,pics.... O-Dark-thirty and raining when i returned from an auction last night. Adding photos. Thanks

You can see where the black trailer paint has scratched off easily in spots leaving the white unscathed. Lid missing handle but otherwise good shape.

The wringer looks like classic 30's vintage, but it's full-skirted. Was gonna say that I thought the full skirts came later, but come to think of it, have never seen a Norge without a full skirt.

I have little experience with machines this old, but plug her in and she might fire right up.

One interesting thing, the distinctive Norge drain hose (no metal hook, veined stream-lined rubber) looks almost the same as the ones used in the 70's.

Good luck with this sweet old relic and welcome to Automatic errrr Wringer Washer. Smile

Thanks mikeyd,
Pretty cool - i will fire her up and see. Had some nice luck removing some paint from the handles and front graphic. Cant believe it held up. J

fired up

Most the day spent on trailer paint, grease and.... removal. For touch up of small scrapes or pit holes is hand and brush or spray the favored method.

I plugged her in and with a quiet buzz the three fin started 180* agitating... cool. Dry test. Any advice on the wet test is appreciated. This thing was so covered this has been more like an archeology dig than a restoration. A good time!

Wow! Look at you go! It's amazing watching it coming out from that layer of paint and grime. If an appliance could sing "Hallelujah..." that one surely would be.

I guess you wont have to paint after all! what are you using to get the black off?

Wet test ... Only one way to find out... start filling !

Seemed to work

Ya, Grateful it looks like touch up instead of re-paint. I sprayed a liberal amount of WD-40 over the paint hoping it might absorb even a little and loosen. Not sure it helped, but in combination with ½ gallon of water to 1 cup concentrated pinesol and 1/8th cup lime away did the trick.

I used a brush a little coarser than an s.o.s pad on the top of the black, and then a softer pad as white started showing, continually wetting.

Like Sam stated, I need to start filling!

That is one of my dream Norge wringer washers .
My aunt had one and use to watch her wash in that machine.
That model is from late fiftes early sixtes.
The best part is that you have a strong straght vane agitator.
It really moves clothes and you no when its washing lots of big water
sounds.
Best of luck on your restaration and
hopefully a video.

Unreal! I actually misread and thought the machine was black

mickeyd's profile picture

If the pump does not work, gravity drain the water and tip the machine on its side. Reach up and work the two pulleys and the belt for the pump. OR if you haven't filled 'er up yet, do the pulley test first.

What a grand transformation. Except for the wringer, and your stylish logo pad, it looks a lot like my older 60's "green" Norge. The "red" Norge up the thread is fron the late 70's. Pic in a moment.

Wet test is right

Filled, plugged in, small hmmm and pause, then action. As it turns out, after checking and following mikeyd's description... it is a gravity drain unit only. I tossed in one large cleaning rag and you can see by the vid it did not take long to dirty the water with that action.

got to go to work on the wringer and lid now. Looks like the lid had one handle near the edge (missing) wish i could get a pic of what it looked like.

Two 20 second vid included ->

You do indeed have a pump model. The lever on the left side is the pump control switch. It is clearly visible in the first unlinked video, available from Youtube. And the hose is the one used on the pump model.

Gravity drain hoses are straight, no goose neck.

Again, you'll have to tip her on her side to see the two pulleys and the belt. I'm sure you'll figure it out. If it's easier, you can slide the wringer up and off before lowering the machine.

Great wash action in the vid. The 3 vane is more versatile than the 4 paddle agitator.

Of course, if the pump has been removed, then your out of luck, and I am wrong.

thanks for the help

good call on the missing pump.... or parts. i think the belt is gone. i engaged the ON/OFF and got a little extra vibration but no pumping.

I need to get it on its side and look better. That full norge skirt makes it hard to see the inards up in there.

Did get the rollers working. The previous owner put a third roller on the front for single side wringer insert/exit pt. interesting.

thanks for the help folks

Another suggestion

stan's profile picture
on the paint... now that you have it clean... maybe try a little Meguire's Fine cut Cleaner (Auto Store) wash down after with soap and water, and wax with (Auto wax) It may bring back more luster!
Hope you locate the pump for R and R.

You doing a fine job Lucly!

You felt vibration when you pulled the pump lever ~ a good s

mickeyd's profile picture

The belt is stuck, but it's there. Wait for help to get the machine in its back. The pulleys and belt are small and toy-like--very agile. Again, if you don't have help, remove the wringer first. It is heavy. One hand on the left, one and the right, and lift-off. Once that's done, laying the machine down is easy. Get behind her, and grab her from the back of the tub, and pull slowly. Next, work those pump parts and you'll be draining away in no time.

It is a really cool pump, is very quiet and makes excellent gurgles at the end. The impeller is so close to the port in the tub, that you can see the tiny blades through the grate, in good light, when they're whirling.

Thanks for the suggestion Stan (Meguire's) i will treat the Norge to some for last of detailing when i get there. Dog gone work keeps getting in the way.

Thanks Mickeyd too. Every-thing rolling now except that pump. did the look-see and got the large belt moving. -> but the little (10-12") belt (wheel to wheel) is missing.

The wheels have part no. 36-1605 on them. But have not had the time to look around for little belt. Ideas?

Inard shot below.

Handle for the Ol Norge?

Still trying to locate a sub belt for my water pump. Either a little to long or a little two thick, but all mechanical engages and runs now. Got the lid back in decent shape to keep that great slosh contained, but would like to get a pic of handle appearance on the ol Norge Wringers.... or description

Those and a little shine and I will be ready for a new project. (Grandmas old wringer out in the barn in southern idaho)

Getting a bit of interest of folks wanting to purchase this Norge... I still have not seen many like it to get a fix on... would appreciate those that would hazzard a guess. Thanks for all the help. J

Good job!

heres a suggestion for a" temporary" fix for the small belt....just to see if the pump works, ...Now don't laugh! but try a pair of pantyhose!
Cut one of the legs off, and tie around the two wheels tight, and cut excess off. Then try engaging the pump. Think this may work until you find correct belt.

What part of S Idaho are you in? Have family in Twin, Buhl, and Sun Valley!

Thanks Stan

Thanks Stan. Grew up in Boise, but live in the Northern Panhandle now. My grandparents farm is between Horseshoe Bend and Emmett ID. Know many from Twin, Buhl and that part. (Nice golf and fishing!)

I will try that rather than my surgical skill of cutting down a belt.

Found a photo of another Norge mid-60's and it has a simple knob, not a handle. I should be able to find something there. Jim

I see missing, is the chrome drainboards on each side of the wringer..Can't beat a NORGE!

missing in action

Yes. Missing the drainboard. Previous owner added a third roller and a stopper and appears used the forward/reverse to same side wring. Dont know why... perplexing for sure.

Sweet job, Jim

mickeyd's profile picture

So glad you took a pic of the unique Norge two-pulley pump. On a wringer, it's very unusual. Normally, a wheel butts up to the drive when you engage the pump. Most levers actually move the pump up or over or both. How neat, fun, and kinky that used panty hose can substitute.

Trying to figure out what the last operator was doing with the wringer. Can you, if you have time, explain more and show more regarding the 3rd roller & stopper?

Post# 607363 , Reply# 34   6/30/2012 at 23:25 (4,317 days old) by luckyfind ()
More on the stopper/3 roller

soon. (I'll take some photos tommorow). The "on/off" does what you were eluding to though... the "on" pulls (both wheels in tandom) the most inner wheel to the main belt engaging the impeler.... ha ha i think.

Im gonna try to find a good home for the Norge as i have found a new project. (Offered this Easy Wringer) for just under $100. Its starting in better condition to start.

not getting

the pump going... went with the classy black nylons though... with a few knots for traction, and seems to be turning (trying to turn) the wheels... im working on the impeler and anything giving resistance. Still at it.
