Per my original post http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?43319  I'm still at it with the 1-18 dryer.  There is so much I don't understand when it comes to diagnosing this.  In order to test the heater do I have to remove the 2 wires from the heater?  How to I test the motor start switch?  What about testing the timer?

lots of stuff

Yes, remove the 2 heater wires before testing. Of course unplug the whole dryer first. You should have conductivity between the 2 contacts proving that the heater coils are still in one piece.

If you or anyone else has a wiring diagram of this exact model, it would help tremendously to post here before we give many other answers. What is the model #?

If You Need A New Element

trainguy's profile picture
Hi Joe,

If it is the element, I still have quite a few NOS still in the box. You may also want to check the wiring block. The bakelite has a tendency to crack over time and sometimes the wire also burns apart near this location.

Good Luck,
Rich

I got it!

joelippard's profile picture

at least I think so.  I removed the 2 wires from the side of the heater and it does not indicate continuity so I am asuming this is the problem???

TrainGuy I would like to purchase one of your spares.  I also would like to repair this one, how does one do that?

Thanks,

Joe

Another Question

joelippard's profile picture

Can anyone tell me how long the belt is on these dryers?  While I'm in there I think i'd like to replace the original.

About the belt,
I can't tell you how long it is but I recently replaced mine and I ordered one with my model number at the local appliance part store. If I remember well, they have 4 grooves and are a bit larger than most others.

It's Nice To Be Back!

trainguy's profile picture
With all of the personal health problems (bad discs, other neck & back problems) I've had, I can't remember much of what has happened over the last 2 1/2 years. I've truly missed appliance collecting and restoring.

I'm getting back into this gradually over the winter and if I'm able to, I'll jump in with both feet in the Spring.

Thanks guys!

and ordered several.  Here is a link included for the forum archives.

Can anyone assist me with how to go about re-stringing the heater?

A special thank you to Rich (trainguy) for sending me new element, dried a load in it tonight!  Thanks to all for your help and the further knowledge I obtained as a result.

Nice to know it works!

Rich, if you still have others, I'd be interested in having a spare too!

Today, I also got a NOS part for my 1-18 dryer that I've been searching for a while. It was the missing drum light lens that I was looking for in the thread in the link below.  I was quite lucky to find it as it was listed as a refrigerator part on eBay!

I Still Have More

trainguy's profile picture
Phil,

Please email (use the one in my profile) me your postal address and I'll get one out to you next week. Glad you found a 1125577 lens for your dryer. I show that I have at least 2 in my inventory, but I looked through about 20 parts tubs and didn't see them yet. One day, I'll get some help organizing all my parts. Are there more Pittsburgh members whom I've not yet met?

Everyone - I still have a few dozen other NOS dryer elements - most in sealed boxes - if you need any. Attached is a pic of a very hard to find dual element stock #7533744 for my DIN that I started to restore 3 years ago.

Joe - glad I could help with the element. Happy washing & drying.

Rich
