MY MAYTAG A208 IS GIVING ME TROUBLE. AFTER FILLING THERE IS A LOUD BUZZ AND THE MOTOR KICKS OUT, THIS HAPPENS REPEATEDLY UNTIL THE MACHINE FINALLY STARTS AGITAITING. ALL THE CYCLES OPERATE FINE, WITH NO UNUSUAL NOISES. MOTOR STARTER? BRAKE/CLUTCH ASSY? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE HELPFULL.THIS 30 YEAR OLD WASHER KICKS BUTT!

As I recall, old Maytags don't have clutches - they use a special belt that can slip without undue wear.

What you describe does sound like a motor problem.

I had an old Maytag back in the '80's. I believe it was a 50's model. Anyway, replacing the motor was very simple, and back then it cost all of $35.
