I just picked up an old Maytag A606. I thought it looked retro, but had no idea there are fans of these machines out there until I found this site.

A couple of questions if I may - is there a way to determine the year? It has the four water levels and the serial number is 308708MU if that helps.

All the markings on the main dial are worn off. Does anyone have one of these that they could take a sharp close-up photo of so I can see what it used to say? Or is there a diagram somewhere?

Finally, what is one of these worth? I intend to use it, but now I'm curious.

Thanks
Steve

Hey Steve,

Welcome, and congrats on the nice find! Your 606 was made approx. September of 1971 (thanks for the serial!). When it comes to value, it all depends on what you would pay for it, and what someone else would pay to take it off your hands. These machines can range anywhere from Free to 50 dollars, depending on condition a abuse. I've included a A606 panel from a brochure, but is a Series before your model, but will give a good idea of what the markings are. Keep us posted!

Ben

That's too funny!

I have an early 70s theme going here. My house was built in 71, I have a 71 Chevelle, my Harley is a 72 and now this washer is a 71.

Thanks for the dial info. I am going to purchase it and clean this baby up!

Question: What came before the A606?

Post# 102556 , Reply# 7   1/8/2006 at 20:42 (6,682 days old) by totalnewb ()
Absolutely one of the most stupid things I've done...

So I am bringing this into my house. My kids are not here, my girlfriend is out of town, my brother is busy, the neighbors are not home. I decide to bring the machine downstairs by myself. If you have any experience with this machine, you know it weighs as much as a Sherman tank. Can you guess what's next?

Half way down the stairs, a wheel shears off the dolly and it rips out of my hands. The Maytag falls about three steps, crashes into the wall, punching a serious gash in the wall, and bending the control panel back about an inch. It is suspended by the control panel and the bottom step. After some serious adrenalin, I muster the strength to lift it back up.

I managed to bend the control panel support back into its original position, so cosmetically, it looks just as it did. The problem is that now when plugged in, NOTHING happens. I know this machine works since the old couple I bought it from this afternoon had to put the wet clothes into the dryer when I arrived to pick it up!

I checked where the power cord comes into the machine, and it's getting power. Any idea where to look next? What might happen to a machine subjected to a hefty impact?

Any ideas? Did I just trash my new treasure?

Post# 102558 , Reply# 8   1/8/2006 at 20:56 (6,682 days old) by totalnewb ()
IT

I am not sure what happened, but after unplugging each wire and putting them back on, it now works! I guess it was just a loose connection.

Now I have no doubt why you all love these machines so much. If I'd done that with a new machine, it would have folded like a pop can. I am impressed! Now, I just need to patch the drywall before my girlfriend gets back...

One final question - what is that cup thing that inserts into the top of the agitator?

Hey Steve,

The small cut is your fabric softener dispenser. I've had my fair share of falling Maytag's - my A702 fell 15 feet after slipping off the dolly. I got lucky and it didn't have any battle wounds, but it did jar the off-balance! Let us know if you need anything else ~

Did I read that right?

15 feet? Holy Moly! Was that a typo or did it really fall 15 feet and survive? That's incredible! I don't know of any product that could withstand that type of trauma and survive!

If it really was 15 feet, I will never buy anything other than old Maytags as long as I live.

If I read that correctly, I am truly a believer!

Post# 102576 , Reply# 11   1/8/2006 at 23:30 (6,682 days old) by fixerman ()

I'll bet the off balance/lid switch broke. Did you try opening and closing the lid? If it still doesn't work, first remove the control panel top and look at the switch to see if it is in place. If everything is ok there, you will have to remove the front panel and flip the top up to inspect the switch parts.

If you don't already have an appliance dolly - the type with a belt that cinches up and rollers that help it up or down stairs, get one. They are also called "refrigerator dollies" but they aren't only for fridges. They aren't that expensive and they are well worth whatever they cost. I've seen them at Home Depot, Costco, and Harbor Freight. I've been able to muscle my 78 GE Filter-Flo in and out of the house with my appliance dolly. And that thing weighs a ton.

It also works on big old Wedgewood stoves.

Hi. What did we do before refrigerator dollies with the strap? I lost grip of my aunt's A806 on the basement stairs when she moved. Slid like an avalanche all the way down. No paint left on the side (oops!) but it ran just like before!
By the way, your A606 is a keeper. It is my second favorite of my Maytags, it seems to be so much quieter that the 608s, I have no idea why. I just wish they put bleach dispensers in them.

By the way Steve, the blue Permanent Press cycle has no markings, just the wash minutes. Soapy, bleachy fingers and spray prewash takes the markings off the dial and buttons, so be careful.

the metal clip in the middle needs to be removed with a screwdriver or a pair of needle nose pliers

Be careful and hold the knob as there is a spring behind the knob

Perk....did I see

Oooooooh, n/m, he has a g/f. ;-)

Welcome to the "club" Steve. Great group of folks here.
I also have an A606, and it also made me a believer in vintage appliances. Yes, they are very heavy, took 3 adults to get mine in my house. (up stairs, no dolly,)

Also note that if you pull up where the fabric softner cup is, on the agitator, the entire thing comes up, that is your lint filter...please clean it after each load to score extra points. (LOL, inside joke)

Congrats on your new purchase, and I hope you get tons of loads out of your Maytag!

Yup. People jumping into the midst of a Maytag are always unaware. I imagine there are thousands of Maytags in the wild on which the filter has never been cleaned!

Hidden filter...

I just pulled the filter and looked at it. Yuck.

The old couple I bought this from bought it new, so they should know better, but I couldn't even see light through the holes. Maybe they just became forgetful, since it didn't look like 35 years worth of grossness, but it was pretty bad.

I am so happy to know this tidbit.

Check this out...

I was going to order the new face plate for the dial, but decided I didn't want to wait that long to get it. I took what was left of the old dial and the photo fixerman provided and brought them into Adobe Illustrator. I recreated it down the the font and color, then printed them out on self-adhesive sticker paper using a color laser printer. The font is not 100% accurate but VERY close. Few people short of font designers would see the difference.

I then sprayed it with clear sealant to avoid damage from wet hands. If cut properly to account for the curvature of the dial, the seam is almost invisible.

I now have a near-perfect reproduction without waiting, and for almost free. I do graphics, video and multimedia for a living, so this was a piece of cake.

If anyone wants a file to print on their own, let me know. I'd be happy to provide a print-ready file and instructions. It's the least I can do for all the information I have already acquired off this site.

Steve

I have several Maytags in my warehouse. Most with chrome trim. Do you prefer to keep the painted chrome trim or would one with real chrome work for you? You would have to transfer all your controls to the new panel.

wash times and maytag '06's

frigilux,

my delicates too are now washed on a 10 minute wash time

although I always did think 10 minutes was a little skimpy ( grew up with an A606S w/ perm press)

the 06 series was produced while phosphates were still in detergents and shorter wah times really could get the job done.

back then.....for me at least...with a full load
12-14 minutes for heavy soil ( I would reset the timer)
8-10 for normal soil
6 mins for very light soil
6-8 minutes on gentle action for delicates

all times reduced for partial loads

And remember about the 06 series Maytags
there was no modle number change when perm press was added.

U could have an A206 or and A606 with or w/o perm press and maytag literature uses those terms.

Then there is the A806............
the original model had a wash 'n wear button...next to the regular action/gentle action buttons...there was no separate cycle.

When the whole line of '06's added the perm press cycle the A806 changed in the fact that it then had the separate cycle on the dial for perm press and 4 speed select buttons for regular or gentle wash and fast or slow spin.

A rather unique (timed not really) bleach dispenser was available on the A806 only.

However u could never get a slow spin on perm press until the 10 series which began in late 1980.

And in between the 06 and 10 series were the '08's
I refer to them as the Jimmy carter models. From 1976 to 1980
they were alost identical to the 06's on every way acept for the following.
**** a direct in bleach dispenser was available on more models
**** a Hot wash /cold rinse had to be available on all models
the '06's had hot warm only on regular ...the only way to get hot cold was on perm press
**** the control panel changed from seamist blue to warm walnut baige
**** the round orange light above the center dial dissappeared,

There never was a A808 produced the model# was not changed from A806 during the 08 series run becasue the 806 always allowed for a hot/cold regular cycle... during the 08 run the the A806 lost its suds saver option availability and went to a direct in bleach dispenser.

Easiest way to identfy what u are looking at

'06 original modles with no perm press on dial...even the deep tub (19) gallon only had 3 water levels and up to 14 mins wash time

'06 models w/ perm press
temp buttons were (cold warm hot) water levels were (small
medium normal) (and large) for the deep tub modles
up to 10 min wash time only...8 mins for perm press

'08 models
temp buttons in reverse (hot warm cold) higher end modles without suds saver option has a hot/warm option
water levels now called (small load ..medium load ...Large load) (Ex Large load) for the deep tub modles

hope this clears up and does not confuse

At first I couldn't understand...

I had no idea why this A606 was getting so much attention. I liked the retro look but thought, "it's just an old machine I picked up for $35- what's so cool about that?"

Now that I finished the dial and cleaned up the filter, I ran a couple of loads. I left the door to the laundry room open while working on the computer so I could hear if everything was OK after the "big tumble".

It had been growing on me, but suddenly I got it! It has an amazing sound! I stopped what I was doing to go watch it and listen. It seems so solid and well built. Mostly, I appreciate the simplicity of its design and its "machineness" if that makes any sense. Meant to run forever and easy to access. This is better engineering than any modern stuff, and was not built to be thrown away when it wore out.

Those are the very reasons I love my other toys of the era mentioned above. I could listen all day (and do) to my Harley running, and the simplicity of it is refreshing. I have a stereo in the Chevelle, but rarely listen to it, preferring to listen to the growl the V8 and the dual exhaust make. And simplicity? I can actually get INSIDE the engine compartment to work on it! I see the ground when I open the hood!

So, I am pretty sure I just took on a new obsession. The only downside to this new discovery of old appliances is that I don't have any room. My house is tiny, and the garage houses my other goodies. Time to buy a bigger house? Or maybe time to replace all the modern appliances with cool old ones...

Now I get it!

The .pdf looks like a perfect match to me. You have a talent that would be very helpful in restoring decals on older machines! I totally agree with you on your statement about the 'sound'. It is a sound of wonderful engineering, wonderful craftsmanship, and that classic Maytag look. I know it took my good friend a little while to warm up to them, but once it hits - you know it - you're a Maytag fan!

I remember what my mom said in 1972 when we got our A606S after a whirlpool 1967 Imperial 90 not that that was a bad machine but the bearing went out after a short time.

she said it sounded "eligant" when it washed and spined..ther is nothing like the sound of a maytag/.......we won't tak about the sound of the "s" modles saving or returning the water tho....that clank was/is neat but unnerving
.
