A fridge intended for large, affluent households - the kind of establishments with a cook and maids and so on. Time was, wealthy people didn't glitz their kitchens up with marble counters and bronze chandeliers - the kitchen was a utilitarian workspace that only the help usually saw.
People today think that an elaborate HGTV-style kitchen is the last word in luxury, but they're wrong. Having the maid or butler bring up the day's menus for your approval with your breakfast tray, and having the staff execute all the cooking, serving and cleaning without your lifting a finger is the last word in luxury! If you've ever seen The Women, you've seen the kitchen in Mary Haines's (Norma Shearer) Park Avenue co-op. That is how wealthy people used to live. Very, very few still do - today, the salaries of all the necessary staff would be a figure high enough to spook Warren Buffett. |
