This machine is great for homes that have the hot water tank on one side of the house and the kitchen on the other.

It sure does look nice! Hope she'll do good by you for years and years to come!

A beauty! You rarely see a KitchenAid of this vintage in stainless steel. Congratulations, and many trouble-free dish loads to you.

Jon your 21 looks awesome in your kitchen! I love the Stainless front!
These are great cleaners!
What did this replace? Was this where your older Kitchenaid with the copper front was?
Happy Washing!

Yes this replaced my KDS-14 , she needs a rest the tub is shot. I think I may have found a donor tub but thats a big job for right now.

Last year when Greg was here we picked up a  20 Patrician which I played around with and rebuilt. I liked it so much I wanted to step up to the quieter version and found this machine last march down on the Cape. It had heavy use but the tub was in great shape so I rebuilt this machine and as I was working on it I found the panels new in box on ebay.

It just purrs and boy I really see a difference in clean between the 20 and the 21 although  I don't think the cycles are all that different.

Its a keeper for sure.

it got a good going over and Jeff was kind enough to bring up an almost new control panel he had buried away under Cal's bed all these years!! That was the frosting on the cake now the thing looks and sounds brand spanking new.

as to the year I think it was built sometime after 1981 as I see the manual for the 20 here as around 1981.

Good for when the water heater is at the other end of the ho

HOW? This machine fills for the prewash without the motor running then sits and heats the water. Once the water is heated, it throws it against room temperature dishware. I can tell you from measuring the temperature with a thermometer that the water temperature is reduced to around 100F by the time it drains. Then you have the water sitting in the pipe and cooling while the machine has heated the water and gone thorugh the prewash and that cooled water is what goes into the next fill. Even if it cleans as well as the 20, it cannot rinse as well with only one after rinse. The residual alkalinity from inadequate rinsing is what attacks the racks over time.

And, Jon, the cycle is different from the 20.

Too funny, Jon. You need a top loader.

What a beauty, and I love that the panel was buried under Cal's bed. What other wonders are under there?

Dishwasher Heating Methodology

HOW? This machine fills for the prewash without the motor running then sits and heats the water.

I think you answered your own question. At our last house we had that situation, the hot water tank was about 50' away from the kitchen. You'd have to run hot water for a long time to get anything above ambient temps before running the DW. We finally got a Maytag DW that heated the water. A KA 100F pre-rinse is much better than a 60F pre-rinse!

The difference between the Maytag and a KA is that the Maytag keeps circulating the water while heating it, the KA sits and heats first before washing.

I'll go back to Doctrine, I thought I read where the 21A ( my machine ) also runs the heater on wash cycle in addition to preheating the first rinse. I'll get back on this. I may have had too  much coffee at the time, we'll see.

It very well may heat water while running. I guess the way to check is to watch the "Water Heating" light when the machine is running. Now I wonder what temp the water gets heated to?

While the facts about heated water being cycled or not are forthcoming - It's a handsome machine..and that's not excluding better performing dishwashers. We're talking looks - it's a beaut.
