Well....

danemodsandy's profile picture
....It appears to be more complete than usual, I'll give it that - the egg trays (white plastic, on the door shelves) and meat pan (anodized aluminum, seen on the top shelf in the interior shot) are present. Can't tell if the glass trays are present in the butter and dairy compartments, nor if the ice trays (aluminum lever-style) are in the freezer.

This is a 1957 Combination, not a '54.

So far as the pricing is concerned, good luck with that. A photo for the Archives is below:

Here's an interior shot showing the food shelves, so that future searches will turn up a photo of a complete-looking interior:

$4500?  Wow, I was only off $4400 dollars when I sold a duplicate of the one in the ad to a neighbor.

I guess the joke was on me!  ;)

And there's a giant wad of ice on the serpentine coil towards the back, why?  And the pan underneath it, why?

Who knows what the freezer looks like?  The mullion down there looks pretty funky.

I've pretty much quit, but for those times when I'd prefer to escape from reality, I'd like to have on hand some of whatever this seller is smoking.

Oh, And....

danemodsandy's profile picture
....The seller describes the interior shelves as "stainless steel."

The shelves (and that meat pan) are actually clear-anodized aluminum; I don't know how this present-day tendency to call any vaguely silvery-colored metal "stainless steel" got started. You see it on eBay all the time.

It's retro Eames midcentury stainless steel.

Perhaps they'll throw in the Maytag Highlander washer next to the refrigerator, making the deal a little less bitter.

I wonder if they tried to list it as $45.00 and the CL posting does not pick up the decimal point? I've had it happen but caught it before posting.

I see what you mean about that mullion! There's definitely soaked insulation or a bad freezer drawer seal - or both - going on down there. I think I see some warpage or separation of the mullion from the liner, as well.

Here's an enlargement:

FYI - the official CL term is "stainless steal"

And, what we appear to have at the top of the freezer drawer is an abundance of good ol' smeg.

Anyone who knows something about refrigeration knows that glob of ice on the food compartment evaporator means "works great" ain't necessarily so. I saw lots of those GE's with the same or similar uneven frost pattern. Most of them were the "newer" models with the condensers at the bottom as opposed to being on the back. They were usually clogged with kitchen grease (which I blame on the electric fry pan craze) and lint. The GE wall fridges were the same. That uneven frost pattern was an automatic trip to the scrap heap, regardless if the refrigerator looked as nice as the one in June Cleaver's kitchen.

I was thinking drop the "4", and we'd be a LOT closer!

It's just a parts donor, and the seller will have to come to terms with that sooner or later -- Barnum factor notwithstanding.

Good grief

I had a yellow one for a VERY short time, I despised it, the fridge has no usable space and the freezer isnt too much better!

Guys, Guys, Guys....

While it's up on the top shelf to catch drips from that ice ball, that pan is the meat pan, often missing from these fridges. It's supposed to go on the bottom shelf, and its bottom is contoured to fit the flange of the support post for the turnaround shelves.

I wish I had a nickel for every time I washed the one in our '58 Combination!

When the serpentine coil defrosts, the water is suposed to drip into the little gutter underneath the coil; obviously the ice ball won't. If only part of the coil is frosting up, it could have a Freon leak.

What a crazy seller

This thing is a mess. Just for fun I asked the seller if he actually meant to post $4,500 or possibly $450 or $45. I also asked him about that ball of ice which sure is not normal. He has not written me back. What a shock.

If....

....Any Craigslist seller ever emails anyone back, please break it to me gently - the shock might kill me!

My experience with the dipgrits who list on CL suggests that they all take a four-year course titled "How to Make Sure You Never Sell Anything to Anybody," and they all graduate summa cum laude.

I wondered about that. I had one for years, that I used as a water dish for the dog. I believe it says "MEATS" on it.

Yes, it does.

If you ever run across another, hold on to it - they're very hard to replace, and you'll find a customer for it here sooner or later.

the owner should..

...donate it to the museum, I saw an earlier model like this in "Return to Peyton Place"....it should be kept...and the seller seems a lil out of touch...
