So we've had the yellow '56 General Electric Liberator 40" range in the kitchen for years in rare sunshine yellow and now we go and find the exact same range but in pink. The pink works wonderfully and is all original including the Sensitemp which the yellow had replaced with a standard burner years before I found it. The Yellow has better trim pieces, and is in just fair working condition. So we can take the parts of both ranges and make one really good one. The problem is which color. It's killing us lol. We've been moving the ranges in and out of the kitchen all day, we even put them together, so what do you guys think? Pink or Yellow?????

PINK!!

I LOVE pink, I hope that sensi temp works, all of the ones I ever had were an aggrivation...including the Norge, which im going to convert to a regular switch soon, I love all the colors in your house, just beautiful.

There is no wrong choice . . .

Both colors look great in your kitchen so it's very much a personal preference. I like the yellow a tad more than the pank, but then again if it were me I'd be looking for a turquoise range!

Yellow looks good in your kitchen.

I think I would keep the pink range,
and paint the entire wall behind it in yellow.

How about blocking that door and keeping both!

Is the porcelain on the pink one in good shape? On the pictures, both look clean!

If I'd have to choose between both, I think it would be the yellow one. If you use the pink range, you should paint the front panels on the Kitchen Aid and the Roto-Rack in yellow to balance it! With two pink appliances, the Turquoise fridge will look mismatched!

Does the one you parted out still had it's automatic Calrod?  If it does, then you could transfer this one on the yellow range and keep both the other pink and the yellow one!

I really like the pink. In the first photo when they're side by side, the pink stands out. It also matches the dishwasher across the aisle. And besides, pink makes
a statement, while yellow is neutral, if you get my drift.

And the yellow matches the wall across from the stove. This would balance the room by having yellow on both sides of the kitchen.

Love those dishwashers with the windows! I wish they made them that way. Do you have any water heat loss with those?

Yellow.

I like both but it seems the Yellow is rarer, pink appliances seem to pop up every now and then.  The Yellow looks great with the rest of the kitchen too.

Robert & Fred. They both look so nice. I wish you the best and hope you have enough parts to make both ranges work. The Yellow is nice in fall and winter, pink for spring and summer. Eliminate the heart wrenching decision. Who knows you may now or in the future have a summer house or something. I like them both. Arthur

It's a better "pop" in that part of the kitchen, and Pink in a major appliance always feels like the Department of the Excessively Girly to me anyway. Fine as a paint color, a fabric color or an accessory color, but not so much for durables.

P.S.: I envy you that nice Cuisinart CFP-4 or -5 on the mixer shelves. I have been looking for one for a while.

Unlike some decorating decisions, there is no wrong answer here; either color works, albeit for different reasons. I'm trending pink. Pink works so well with the blue, and you get the tie-in with the KA directly across from it.

I know, I know, such a hard decision. If we decide on the pink then the KitchenAid dishwasher across from it will have to go yellow as we don't want two major appliances to be the same color in the Kitchen, it throws everything off!

I also suggested a Pink control panel on the yellow range, but I got that spousal look from Fred that lovingly says "NO" lol.

Really not enough good parts to keep make two good ranges, one only good Automatic Calrod assembly between the three range, so only one range it is.

Ugh, I'm going to go do wash as I can't think about it. Such first world problems we have.

Is anyone else reminded of the Jeannie episode where dr Bellows accidentally obtained Jeannie's powers. In a phone conversation with Amanda, they discussed the paint color of the house. Meanwhile, the painter is having his mind blown because the house color bounces back and forth. Eventually landing I a mix of yellow and green.

So, I vote for blending body parts from both ranges to get a mix of yellow and pink.

And in the words of Larry Hagman, "I wish you had my problem!"

That was also my initial not entirely flippant thought. They do look good together!

Yellow - against the turquoise it gives the kitchen a 50's University of California (yellow and blue) motif.

Pink - the classic 50's contrast for turquoise.

I'd put the yellow in the laundry room in the basement, to help serve wash-in demonstrations, and put the pink in the kitchen.

And I'd also stop cruising Craigslist for more ranges. You're fixed for life with those three!

is based on the predominating yellow and turquoise on the floor and walls... the pink is just crying out for balance. Now to really go over the top, all we need is some pale purple and light mint green in there for the true pastel experience!

Re appliance colors..

Hotpoint made a mint green I really liked in the early 50s before turquoise came out, seafoam or something like that, Westinghouse confection colors were my very favorite, their pink and turquoiseish colors were beautiful, but if you really want different, find a cadet blue GE!!!

Thanks for all the feedback guys. The problem is if the range gets moved to the basement than two appliances in the basement need to go, meaning two vintage washers or a vintage washer and dryer. In this house the washers and vacuums rein supreme over all other appliances so the washers win.

Only one color can win and we are still just as torn lol!

I Don't Know If This Helps, But....

danemodsandy's profile picture
I looked at both the pink and yellow photos with a magazine editor's eye, as if I were choosing between them for publication.

The yellow won hands-down; the pop of yellow there and its tie to the yellow on the wall made for a very good balance of colors within the photo.

The pink is slightly "dead," in pictorial terms; it's a nice enough color, but it does not offer the visual interest in that area that the yellow does. The balance of colors within that photo does not engage the eye to anything like the same degree as does the photo with the yellow.

These comments would be specific to the kitchen as it exists now; they don't mean that the pink range could not be sensational with some redecoration (the pop of pink that Greg's GE range offers his more neutral kitchen looks great). But without changing anything but the range in your kitchen, the yellow works better visually.

Mike, I already suggested the mix and match theme to Fred and I got that spousal "absolutely not" look that could kill lol.

Rich, we much prefer electric cooking, otherwise we'd have a Western Holly round window range as it looks like a double front loader. There is both a gas line and electric line behind our range, so it would be easy to do either, but no gas cooking in this house.

I agree with most about the yellow being a warmer color, but the pink is sooooooo cute and quintessential 1950's. What we decided to do is rebuild the pink range, since we've had the yellow for a while. Then we will put the yellow range into the garage and live with the pink for six months or so and see how we like it. After six months we will make the final decision, if we go back to yellow then the good parts will have to be removed from the pink range and installed on the yellow range.

I'd choose the pink for the funky factor.

I have never seen pink before in Canada, so it "looks" like someone purposely restored it and chose that color...looks like a choice a trendy/wealthy/hipster person would make.

Yellow, brown and green were once popular, so the yellow color just makes it look old...looks like someone who can't afford any better would have.

Of course if pink was once popular in your area, and yellow was rare, then the yellow might be the "cool" color.

Since you like them both equally, go for the one that draws mor smiles and comments from your visitors.

"Rich, we much prefer electric cooking"

Yikes. I'm bowing out of this one. lol

Well, obviously I prefer gas cooking over electric, at least for the range top. For the oven, I prefer electric. For the broiler, gas. It does get a bit complicated, lol.

Robert, your decision to go with the pink makes sense, since that one is in much better working order and will need less done to it to get it ready for use. The yellow as a "back up" is good too.

I haven never seen yellow appliances as very common. Of course I'm not counting the very popular Harvest and Harvest Gold colors as yellow, per se. I like the bright sunshiny yellow of that range, and agree that it would look just as good in that kitchen as the pink one (you do have a yellow accent wall near it as well).

Personally I wouldn't have a pink appliance. Just not my taste. Pink bathroom, OK if it's vintage.

Good choice on your approach, you have both so give the pink one a test run and see what you think. I think I'd choose the pink one as it seems to reflect the vintage more. I showed the thread to Annette and there was no contest, but pink is her favorite color.

I concur on the choice of electric cooking too, its just so much more controllable.

It seems like yellow received more votes, but I vote for pink--even though I see you have already decided. I think the camera did not pick up the pink color as faithfully as it did the yellow color. I would like to see you get one more pink mixer to pull it together.

Reading this thread was fun:)

Hi everyone, well almost five months later we're back. Now we've swapped colors. The KitchenAid dishwasher has gone from pink to yellow and the GE Range has gone from yellow to pink!

The color isn't photographing quite right, the color in person is more of a super forum yellow color, and we love it! I rebuilt the frame and decided to make it match in color as well.

First before having it painted, I needed to get it sandblasted to remove the pink paint.

I changed the door switch on the KitchenAid from a single/pole-single throw switch (SPST) to double/pole-double throw switch (DPDT). I did this so I could do some rewiring so the interior light would come on when I opened the door as well as when the dishwasher is running. I was lucky to find the same brand still making the switch but a DPDT version all these years later!

And this took about a month to do, so I moved the KitchenAid down in the workshop and during that time I installed that nice '63 Frigidaire Dishwasher. It is an absolutely beautiful dishwasher.

Robert, regarding the stove... We told you so. :)

Just kidding. Looks fantastic imo!

Pretty but..

For myself I would have kept the yellow range and had the yellow dishwasher. I just love how yellow pops in your kitchen. Though I love pink against pale green and cream or even wood.

I really enjoy looking at your kitchen. The new washer and stove work perfectly...it's really a pleasure to view, and I like the dishwasher more in yellow than pink. For me, color is really an imagination trigger. This would be alot of color for me/us to attempt, but you guys pulled it off so well.

This kitchen reminds me of Easter Eggs, and I know that's not what you guys had in mind! But to me, it's a big Easter Basket, with a lot of cheer. I've lost it, for sure. :-)

Robert, the new setup is LOVELY! Can't wait to see it in person. I the pink stove looks great in your kitchen.

The KA DW looks awesome in its new color and so finished now that you painted all the parts. I might have anodized the trim pieces a different color instead of painting them, but the monochrome look makes the edges disappear. Let me know if you ever need anything anodized, I send batches out every week.

Beautiful!

The nice thing about this kitchen is that there are no wrong choices in color, gotta love it.

Phil- can you get anodizing done in copper? There's a part of the decorative panel on the range that goes around the buttons, and is the length of the backsplash itself (you can kind of see it in the pic of the pink range in the back of the truck). Anyways, originally, that piece was a bright beautiful anodized copper... It's faded with years of scrubbing. I've actually tried calling a few places around here with no luck. We'd like to get that re-anodized if it's possible.

Fred, That color looks like it may be tough to match. When they anodize a piece of aluminum the first step is to immerse the aluminum in an acid bath then flow an electric current through it into the tank. This builds up an oxide layer that is reasonably durable and somewhat porous. For cosmetic colors they then dip the aluminum in a dye to impart a color then seal it in a boiling water bath. Obviously they need a tank of dye the color you need.

Typically most of the anodizing we do is black or clear (no dye). We also run red, yellow/gold and blue as needs arise. The anodizing shop we use could likely duplicate what you have, although it would take some work. The part would have to be stripped, re-polished and then masked to define the areas to be anodized. Then anodized and dyed in an appropriate color bath. Unlike tossing a few parts into a batch going out this one would cost money, I'd guess between $100-200 if they have to make up a dye batch just for that color. It might not be so bad if you had a few pieces to run...

Send me a close up photo of the color sometime with a piece of white paper in it for reference and I'll check on availability.

I'd be sitting on the floor with the skirts off your slant Westys (no tools required), basking in nostalgia. Those spin solenoids are why earthquakes never scared me much.

That dishwasher turned out beautiful!!  Nice to have the KA back, I'm sure.

For a trim piece done in the color you want, $200 sounds like a lot but it's a one-time expense.  I've paid that for re-chroming pieces of trim on my WI-57 and still have the DI-57 chrome to do and it will likely be double as there's more to do.  All in the name of appliance-love...

Guys,

However you have your kitchen it looks great. Personally I like the DW in yellow better than when it was pink. And not that the pink range doesnt look great in its own right but I liked how the yellow range stood out more. I would say that the pink being more subdued makes it blend in with the white in the kitchen.

But it may be the angle of the shot too. It might look very different looking straight at it against the turquoise wall. Could also be the color reproduction of the camera. Like Robert said the color of the DW is actually different than it appears in the picture.

What about mixing the colors? Put pink doors on yellow range or verse visa?

How can you go wrong with either choice? The kitchen looks fabulous, in either color scheme! You are lucky to have them to choose from!

Robert & Fred the kitchen appliances look great, just the way you have them.  The 1963 Frigidaire dishwasher is stunning.  Frigidaire really must of had a "serious" design team.
