I was sure when I was a kid I remember seeing Sam's round dial Frigidaire washer in their house at 1164 Morning Glory Circle, I finally saw it in a second season episode. Of course for at least four seasons we always saw her square dial Frigidaire. I thought maybe I was imagining seeing the round dial 1965 model, nope here it is...

Only an Imperial washer?? How odd that she wouldn't have rated the TOL.

But with those magic powers, she could make the machine do all sorts of fun things...

Robert I seem to recall that the Stevens refrigerator in the b&w episodes is like yours. Also, didn't Samantha have one of the last spray tube dishwashers in those early years. The one I'm visualizing with the single dial and lovely full-width curved chrome pull handle? I know its hard to get a clear glimpse of her appliances in some episodes. However, they did seem to change them out routinely.

Robert - I just happened to be watching the first episode last nite, and noticed at the end of the show, Sam and Darren come home in through the kitchen, from the famous 'party'. In the back ground, I was expecting a Frigidaire set - nope, a TOL Maytag set - the likes of a DE702/A702 matched pair. They seemed to be quite dark in color - maybe coppertone or turquoise? There is also a great shot of a dishwasher I've never seem before - with a big window on the front, and what appears to be a roto basket!

Wasn't that dishwasher a Kenmore?

Did any of the production models have the window, or was it just the demos?

Thanks for the link

Jeff, i think the pics of the kitchen in the link is from about 1966 or 67. The refrigerator profile view with the pushbutton door opener feature came about during that time. I think this is also the time when the series came out in "living" color.

Regardless, the its a fun site and very cool to reminisce!

Frigidare Makes Sense For Sam

Of course, Samantha felt like a queen with her Frigidare kitchen. But then, during the first five years of "Bewitched," Chevrolet was the show's co-sponsor--and it was a short jump from one General Motors division to another (witness the Chevys Sam and Darrin drove).
Wonder what Sam's kitchen would look like today?

I always liked the Stevens' house because....

She had a Sunbeam Mixmaster model 12 on the counter, and used a Hoover Dial-A-Matic model 1100.

After a fire on the set, everything was changed and there was some gas cooktop.

Veg, no regular production D&M dws had windows. She must have twitched that right out of a Sears store.

Yes in the first two episodes when they lived in a NYC apartment they had a Kenmore D/M dishwasher with a see-thru window along with a Maytag W/D set. The DW was a 1963 model and was a store display that was probably purchased by Hollywood from Sears after they discontinued it for 1964.

You are correct Leslie, in the house they had the exact same 1964 Frigidaire Custom Deluxe Refrigerator that we have.

Here is the dishwasher...

Samantha, her Flair, Aunt Clara & Phyllis Stevens

In many episodes Samantha is cooking, baking or roasting something in her Flair. I think she is even cleaning the oven in one show that I recall.

One B & W show, that to me was "outstanding", is when Samantha and Darrin as newlyweds are entertaining Frank & Phyllis Stevens; his parents. Allegedly, Samantha is an inexperienced cook/housewife, so she has Aunt Clara helping her in the kitchen. There are many fun kitchen scenes with a delicious dinner being prepared via incantations with the Flair. Aunt Clara's powers were working well and the dinner went off beautifully, much to Phyllis' disappointment. She was hoping to be able to offer motherly advice, but none was needed. Her daughter-in-law was perfect and needed no help in the kitchen. In the end, Sam admitted to being a novice and that Aunt Clara prepared the dinner. There was a real mother and daughter in-law bonding message at the end. Very sweet.

Those early B&W episodes I think were especially well written and drew inspiration from Darren & Sams deepening relationship as newly married couple. There were some adult themed shows that were probably somewhat risque at the time.

Also, has anyone noticed; the other kitchens, The in-laws, The Tates, Kravits' and the helpless girl next door paled in comparison to Darren & Sams. They seemed uninspired, so unlike Samantha's. One bright spot; Gladys had a Maytag pair off in a corner. Anyway, one of my favorite classic TV shows.

sam's appliances

Samantha also had a Sunbeam Toaster and Hamilton Beach Blender with the plastic handle. I think a proctor silex juicer too but not sure.

You weren't imaginging things, Ben. Samantha and Darren were either living in a rented house or in Darren's bachelor pad ( I've heard it described both ways) in the first episode. That house did indeed have a dark colored Maytag set. It also had that awesome windowed dishwasher. Like you, I've never seen another one like it. Does any one know what brand it was? The roto-basket implies Kenmore (most likely a Lady K), but I've never seen a Kenmore dishwasher with a windowed door before. (Not even the demo models that you used to see in Sears stores.) It would be awesome if someone could find one just like it.

According to the

Inflation Calculator, that dishwasher in 2005 dollars would go for 1,160.22.

Yikes.

If we could only have 1963 prices and 2005 balances in our checking accounts!
