That is the Muntz TV my dreaded, and dreadful, maternal grandmother had, the exact one. That photo gave me the shudders!
Muntz is not a good word in our family, anyway. My dad trained with RCA, but didn't get hired right away, so he went to work for Muntz. At that time, Earl Muntz had jumped on the early '50s TV bandwagon selling sets cheaper than anyone else. How did he do it? By building a lower-quality set than anyone else dared put their name on. The crappy quality ensured that it wasn't long before he went out of business, taking my dad's job with him. Dad says the guy - long dead, of course - still owes him some pay. RCA hired him not too long after - the beginning of forty years with the company. But don't say "Muntz" to him. |

No, it's really sort of a joke in the family, except that Dad doesn't take getting abused lightly - he has a hard time forgetting and letting go.
The part about Mom's mom is the bad memory. Remember "The Queen of Mean," the late Leona Helmsley? Leona would have fled from that grandmother in terror. Fortunately, I had another grandmother, and the good memories she made for me are frequently seen on this site. :) |

The only place I saw Muntz TVs advertised was in the green TV section that came in the Saturday Atlanta Journal (and Constitution, too, I guess). Was it a national brand? |
