....A 1957 BH-13P 13 cubic-foot Combination, first year for the Straight-Line Design styling program.
It could also be a BH-15P, the 15-foot version. Nice enough, but for that price, I'd want to see a full set of removables, and I'm not seeing any. This fridge originally had: - A meat pan in clear-anodized aluminum - Two white plastic egg trays that fit into the door shelves - A glass dish for the butter compartment - A glass dish for the cheese compartment - Four aluminum ice trays The butter and cheese dishes and the egg trays are the hard ones to find. |

The egg trays usually bought the farm when they were set on the stove too close to the burners. The ones on our '58 Combination had a couple of melted places from that.
The dairy dishes got broken, of course. And ice trays didn't live forever. The ones with these Combinations were GE-branded, with a waffle pattern in the aluminum which was supposed to help them release the ice better - and didn't really. What I can't figure out is why the meat pans are always missing. Those things were very large and quite substantial. Maybe people diverted them to other uses, like mixing small batches of cement.... |
