I had the exact same harvest gold Whirlpool fridge with the matching Connoisseur double oven electric in my last house. That fridge was far from being energy efficient.

" fridge was far from being energy efficient. "

ovrphil's profile picture
That is the question, what are the most energy efficient for their years? One of those discussions that has already been covered here and in the archives(?).

But it usually works out where you buy first and worry about energy efficiency later in the movie.

A good rule of thumb..

If it says Frost Free or self defrost...RUNNNN...A manual defrost fridge is very economical to run, especially a older one like that Leonard...no extras like mullion heaters around the doors etc, lots of insulation and a positive latch, these run forever and keep stuff cold cold cold, foods keep much better because air is not blowing on them and drying them out...especially fruits and vegetables.

Thank you for the reminder, Han. It's a good rule of thumb. Otherwise, would a smaller frost free refrigerator generally be less energy-sucking than a larger capacity? I've seen some comments that the electric bill can be enormous with the vintage frost frees. I can't help but wonder, too ...doesn't it also block out some attractive looking and functionally interesting refrigerators? (talking to the air..cost$$$$)

Previous owners dressed up the kitchen with new cabinets, those Whirlpools plus a Lady K roto rack that was the absolute best dishwasher I have ever had. So they were all in the house when I bought it.

Ge bottom

How hard is it to flip the door on these ge bottom mounts

You can't flip the doors on those GE's.

I'd love to have that turquoise one, but they're asking too much since it needs a cold control.  From what I've seen and my own experience with the same cold control on my '57 GE,  that component is clearly the weak link on GE's from this period.

That Whirlpool is the exact same one I had during the 80s in my St. Charles kitchen, except mine was White.

Just out of warranty, it broke down and needed a new compressor. It got it. Three short years later, it did the same thing. That time it got scrapped and turned into a new Hyundai or something.

Between that and some other bad (not to mention costly) experiences, I decided No. More. Whirlpool. EVVVERRRRRR!

Thank you, Mommie Dearest....

That's a curious Westinghouse.  I thought only Frigidaire was making those 3-door models back then.

The Hotpoint is complete and just needs a good cleaning.  No spinning shelves or in-door thermometer as found on its GE counterparts from the same period, but not a bad price for a reliable fridge.

Love the GE Bottom Freezer.  It looks to be in great shape.

I love the unique Westinghouse 3 door.  Were these good refrigerators?

Mommie Dearest Sandy!  So interesting about your Whirlpool.  Wonder if you got a bad one?  My Mom and Dad still have the exact fridge in Almond color as a second refrigerator in the garage!  They bought it new at Woolco back in the day.  Never had any issues.  It is in a very HOT garage in Louisiana and has been running there for the last 15 years!

ge spacemaker

Vintage ge spacemaker in hampton is gone. It was in an estate auction. I had the highest bid. Went and struggled to put it in back of pick up. Drove home. Blew it off real good. Struggled some more getting it into house. Pluged it back in. Checked it in a few hrs ...40 deg fridge 5 deg freezer. Love it.

Hey, that's our basement fridge!

polkanut's profile picture

The Frigidaire pictured in reply #32 is exactly like our basement fridge.  We bought it in 1998 with the express purpose of being a 2nd fridge.  We bought it at an estate sale for $30.  Ours was bought new approx. 1972.  It is a non self-defrost model, and is also a Cycla-Matic.  A very quiet unit.  Ours has one large turquoise metal crisper drawer across the bottom.

The seller needs to do some homework.  Just because it's older doesn't necessarily mean it's from the "early 1960's". lol

That Tru-Cold has surfaced before.   Custom paint or not, they'll never get $1,000 for it.

The two-tone paint is an exact replica of the interior scheme on the '57 Lincoln Premiere we had when I was a kid.

The Amana 22's:

danemodsandy's profile picture
Those are both really nice fridges! Really beautiful. I had seen the one in Des Moines, but not the Chicago one.

If running cost were no object, I might be interested, but these are '70s fridges, not terribly efficient by today's standards. John combo52 figures that one would cost about $40 a month to run nowadays.

Since I'm single, I feel that I really need to set my sights on a smaller box. The Amana 13 would be ideal for my actual needs, though the 16 would also be okay. Both of those are top-mount models.

I hugely appreciate the leads on these 22s.

DAve /Sandy - #52 got my vote. But at ~$40/month (depending on what electrical charges by state), that's just under what we're charged for water. Must be the insulation and a hungry compressor. Can one retro-fit a more efficient compressor? I'm talking about removing a 427 V-8 and dropping in a smaller more efficient engine only refrigerator-talk. That would be a labor of love execution of hell, maybe? lol.

New COMP--Look: NO FREON!!!! (Or CFC's)

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture

I once saw on TV, some documentary on a refrigerator compressor that is actually a BALL that refrigerates using magnetic properties...

The narrator for this documentary is even in a junkyard behind a GE fridge w/ an external condenser saying this device eliminates the need for it, as well as the evaporator (and tosses away each part including the native freon-utilizing--and CFC-emitting--"old school" compressor)...

The doc' ends w/ the military actually wanting this particular compressor design & likely to be the first clients for it, just due to it potentially withstanding its obviously heavy-duty use...!

I wouldn't even attempt(if I knew electrical and refrigeration engineering enough) to try and retrofit some of the "vintage" fridge's, but whatever you saw sounds like an external adaptation that you'd hide or put on top of the fridge(like the old GE's compressor's on top).
