Seeing that Litton makes me homesick for the one I had--exactly just like that, but was the 1.5 cu. ft. cavernous Meal-In-One version. The absolute best microwave I've ever used!! Extremely even cooking. Didn't need no stupid turntable to make sure your food cooked evenly. That which is displayed is like a 1977 or 1978 model. 1976 at the very earliest. Lasted me 24 years of constant daily use of real COOKING, not just reheat or steaming vegetables. |

....On the card reader is that it was a magnetic-strip card, similar to credit cards. I'm thinking that the microwave was capable of both card reading and card recording.
It might have been a great idea if microwaves were actually used for cooking. Even in the '70s and '80s, relatively little of that went on. The feature just wasn't something many people needed. |

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Given I intensely dislike today's all stainless steel look. There was always something I didn't really like all that much with the look of many Amanas. And it just occurred to me. So many had that all metal look. A premonition of what is today's all stainless steel look? Cold and institutional. I'd rather look at the "color" of faux wood and black. But they are durable. |

Bob - I like both the faux wood and chrome, but too much of either doesn't appeal to me, either - anyways, did you have a Meal-in-One Litton?

Yes, I had a meal-in-one model. "entry level" that was all mechanical rather than touch panel. the meal-in-one design was the reason why it cooked so evenly when cooking one item. When I acquired my MW, I had moved work location to a very sterile environment with very few lunch options and there was no cafeteria. My apartment was 2 blocks from work. I began having lunch for about 6 or 8 people 3 or 4 days a week. I'd prepare the meal the night before. The meal-in-one allowed me to pretty much put all of lunch in the microwave at once and reheat everything simultaneously in 10-15 minutes. Hence why I have so much microwave-safe larger pieces, could get a certain combination of pieces in the microwave at the same time to reheat. |

That Panasonic SkyLite MW oven is fun but only worth about $50 at best, I found one at a thrift store in Minnesota fot about $25 a few years ago.
Litton had some pretty good MW ovens in the 70s, I worked for a Litton MW service agency in 1978 as a technician repairing Litton MWs along with several other brands. At the Museum we have a Hi-low Litton range that not only has a MW oven on top with a built-in ventilation system, but it also has a Self-Cleaning combination MW conventional oven below, as far as I know it is the only appliance ever to incorporate TWO MW OVENS in one appliance, I was once told they only sold a few hundred of these ranges. It was just too far ahead of most peoples thinking, Both my brother Jeff and I each have three MW ovens in our kitchens, we both have a Self-Cleaning Micro-Combination oven as one of them, actually my friend Tom also has about the same setup. I would think any well equipped kitchen should have a minimum of two MWs with at least one being a combination unit. |

Not a terrible price for an RR-2. It even has a 'Radarange Study' sticker on the back from '74.

ad: " Full size Tappan Microwave.
I bought this for my Mother, Xmas 1978. Yeah, I said 1978! I paid $348 bucks for it... that $1300 in today's dollars lol... anyway, someone bought her a new one... I told her to just open the door on this one and put that new one inside since it's so tiny, but she didn't go for it. It's analog, not digital, so no computerized control board to go out. It still works and sounds like it did the day I took it out of the box. It weighs about as much as a full sized car. lol It could use a better cleaning job, then what I did. It's like the engizer bunny.. it keeps going and going. $10 " CLICK HERE TO GO TO ovrphil's LINK on Mohave Craigslist |

Lengthy ad:
"Litton invented the microwave oven, and here in Minneapolis. Plant was at at 1405 Xenium Lane, Minneapolis 55441 These are very good working models as well as collector items. 1.2 cu ft interior Selling two large models. Have service info. $50 for BOTH. Litton model 460, mfg January 1978 This one works fine and has critical parts that can be used to fix the other one Litton model 1570, mfg October 1979 Not fixed: blows fuses. Has very complete programmable cooking options. Problem believed to be power supply only, and likely an easy fix. Litton invented the microwave oven and solved the hot-spot problem without a turntable. Litton patent prevented competitors from the hidden "stirrer" that breaks up "standing waves" which are the cause of hotspots. Thus the crummy models that have hotspots use the turntable as a solution technically ignorant customers can believe, but it's not as good and certainly not better than eliminating the hot spots as the Litton patented approach does! Both of these have the feature to remove hotspots so have a simple interior bottom surface and more usable cooking space. (if your microwave has a turntable, it is an inferior design that has hotspots.) Both of these also accept the thermometer option so they can cook to temperature instead of just time. Do not have the temperature probes, but these can often be found in thrift stores or bought online. Model 460 works fine. Uses the same tube and supply as the one with fancier controls that needs TLC. CLICK HERE TO GO TO ovrphil's LINK on Minneapolis Craigslist |

Were there american-made countertop microwave ovens that neither had a turntable or some kind of stirrer? |
