The Avocado Range

pulltostart's profile picture

That's a nice range - extremely clean with an odd combination of features.  It has the automatic oven, but there's no light in the oven (note the plug in the upper right side behind the oven door, where a light switch should be).  I'm not terribly fond of avocado, but would be pleased to have this one.

The hood is a very different story...

"1950's Stainless Steel Wall Oven"

Not 1950s - nor stainless - at all. It's a 1970s JK 14 in Brushed Chrome. The giveaway on the age is the Ye Olde Fayke Woode Graine insert on the oven door handle; earlier examples used a brushed-metal-look insert.

This was an upper-MOL unit with P*7, but it did not include the electric meat thermometer and the rotisserie found in the TOL JK 19. It also had the regular oven door window, not the TOL window with the heavy chrome frame.

This is a very nice unit; someone in need of a wall oven would do well to snap it up.

Vintage 1960's GE Electric Oven - $50 ( Lancaster / Cent

ovrphil's profile picture
AD: " This is a fully functional vintage 1960s model General Electric oven with push button burner controls! This is a slide-in unit that I just removed from the kitchen. Before pulling the stove, I took photos as you can see, to demonstrate that all of the heating elements are fully functional. This electric range is still in very good condition and only needs some cleaning which I will leave up to the new owners. This will make a wonderful authentic addition for a retro kitchen!!!

Please Note:
I have been slowly working on clearing out several items I acquired over the years which I have in storage. Many of the items are vintage, collectible and unusual. I tried to priced them low enough, so even individuals could purchase these items and resell them for a profit. I briefly described and included a couple of pictures of each item. As time allows, I will place additional postings of other items that may be of interest to you. In order to see others items I have posted, please type the search word myotherpostings (that is the combination of the three words... my other postings, without the spacing between words) in the search box. Let me know if you're interested in any or all of the items. I may be able to do better on a price depending on how many items you purchase. Thank you for looking!"

I love the yellow stove in reply #11 and I think that fridge is a '63 or '64 model.  It's the larger 18.8 cu. ft. capacity too.  It's a very handsome fridge!

"The range in reply #11 is actually Almond, and is from the late 70's - early 80's.. Canary Yellow was discontinued around '67."

The range in # 11 is Yellow, because it's a 1966 model. Last year without an oven door window on the 40" P*7 large oven, and with the white glass backguard. It's the TOL, with Sensi-Temp, the electric meat thermometer, the rotisserie and the griddle. This particular range seems to have had its Sensi-Temp burner converted to a regular one; this was a common means of dealing with a malfunctioning Sensi-Temp unit. Also, pushbutton burner controls didn't survive into the Almond years on TOL 40" ranges.

The range in # 15 is an Almond range from the late '70s - it has the oven door window on the big P*7 oven, it has woodgrain on the backguard and it lacks convenience outlets, which were dropped in the mid-'70s as a safety measure.

If It Makes You Feel Any Better....

danemodsandy's profile picture
....Tom, I made a mistake in my post above. '66 was not the last year for the white glass backguard - the '67s also had them. The yellow '67 in the eBay thread about the overpriced Yellow range and fridge has the white glass. '67 was the first year for a windowed oven door on a 40-incher with P*7.

Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault....

GE Combo in Dallas

The persons selling says the fridge runs but it freezes up. Is this a freon problem or thermostat problem?

Post# 800094 , Reply# 37   12/21/2014 at 14:28 (3,423 days old) by rp2813 (Sannazay)

rp2813's profile picture

I don't see how a fridge could "freeze up" if it was low on freon.

Thermostats were the weak link on GE's from this period.  I'd wager that's the problem, unless the seller doesn't realize that the freezer isn't frost free and requires periodic defrosting.

When the thermostat failed on my '57 top-mount, it wouldn't cycle off.  It just got colder and colder, and the serpentine coil in the refrigerator section developed a thick layer of frost instead of the thin glaze that forms when the cold control is operating properly.

If I were you, I'd go after a  GE Combination from 1959 or later with "Frost Guard" if it's going to be your daily driver.  From what I've read here in the past, defrosting those bottom freezers is a task that should be avoided.  Also, the articulated shelves on the Frost Guard models are a superior design to the revolving ones.  I think you'd be much happier with a fridge that looked like the turquoise one a few posts up.  It's worth the wait for one to come up for grabs in your area.

Range in Reply #35:

danemodsandy's profile picture
Wow, has that seller got a few misconceptions!

The range is mid-1970s; the clues are the stainless trim on the outer edges of the cooktop, and the control knobs, which have stamped skirts, not the die-cast ones of earlier models.

The range is mid-MOL; it has P*7, a lighted cooktop and the desirable two-large/two-small burner configuration, but it does not have Sensi-Temp. The "yellow-green" color mentioned in the ad is Harvest.

$250 is a very high asking price for a fairly ordinary '70s GE in a hard-to-shift color.

That is to die for! Exactly the 40-incher I'd want, if I had room for one.

Don't get me wrong, a good 30-inch range is a great thing to have, but for those of us who grew up with the Big Kahuna, there's nothing like having all that cooktop real estate, plus two ovens.

This one looks to be complete and cared for.

Sigh!

Sorry, Phil:

But that 40-incher in Reply #55 is Harvest, not Yellow.

The easy way to tell Harvest from Yellow is to look at the edges of the oven door and the front of the storage drawer. On Harvest, these edges will be "shaded," meaning that an area at the edge will be sprayed with a slightly darker color than the middle of the panel.

On Yellow, no shading was done; it was a solid color.

Sandy - I appreciate the help. I kind of sort of in a way thought it was Harvest at first, but didn't catch the detail you mentioned. And I can't change the text until I upgrade as a member, so until then ( and I'll be doing that later next month), your correction works.

That 40-inch GE keyboard range is incredible!

Overall, very nice condition, and having the meat probe present is a real plus. No mention of the griddle, but they're replaceable. Even the sensor for the Automatic Calrod is there.

Amazing what shows up, huh?

I'm still impressed that so much has not gone to the scrappers, yet(shhhh Phil!) . Yet, the washers and dryers of the same periods that are full of stoves and refrigerators, are tougher finds.

The above keyboard range - no glass on panel, is there?

The only glass on the panel of that range is on the faces of the clock and the electric meat thermometer dial, BUT....

Below the control panel's console, between the pedestals that support it, is what GE called a "backsplasher," a piece of ribbed, translucent glass. It allowed wall decor to show through, but kept grease and spatters from getting to it.

Rough handling of a keyboard range during a move can crack the backsplasher.

Here's a photo of a 1957 TOL Liberator, where you can clearly see the backsplasher and what it was meant to do. The photo is from the AW Archives, originally posted by Ben swestoyz:

That's basically the same range you showed, just Turquoise instead of White. The color certainly amps up the glamour!

By the way, if anyone thinks today's appliances are expensive, take a look at the price some shopper noted on the above brochure photo - $539.95. That translates to $4408.00 in today's puny money.

Such was the cost of giving Americans secure manufacturing jobs.

Sandy - I missed the jog in the metal trim on the left side - thought the top of the one I posted was uninterrupted linear beauty. There's a "fin" on the left side. :-) Thanks. Yeah, coming from the motor city, it allowed many of our neighbors to bring their dollars out for appliances at Sears, Highland Appliance("Fifty Watts of Power Baby Cakes" - sorry, couldn't resist quoting an old tv ad), Montgomery Wards, and many other retailers. Ah, the good old days. Ok, not too old, watch it, watch it!

The console on a keyboard range is insanely complicated, composed of stampings and castings, plus wiring and switches galore.

Costing one out would be the perfect murder of a bean-counter, because nowadays, those guys would take one look at the figures and have a brain hemorrhage.

Maybe they can offer their heads to science - I'm sure they'd learn of a new strain of aberrant connectivity that should be avoided in the future(if we get that far).

Was this model offered in one width only?

Keyboard ranges were offered in both 40 and 30-inch widths.

The 30-incher (called the Spacemaker 30) had every feature of the 40-incher save two: It lacked a second 8-inch burner and the small second oven. Aside from those two things, you got everything the 40-incher boasted: Automatic Calrod (the predecessor of Sensi-Temp), automatic oven control and minute-minder, the electric meat thermometer, the griddle, the chrome inner panel for the oven door, the cooktop light, Tel-A-Cook lighted keyboard buttons (that lit in different colors for different heat settings), everything.

30-inch keyboard ranges are much harder to find than 40-inch ones; the 40-inch range was still the standard size in the late '50s. A Spacemaker 30 in Canary Yellow is below; this is also a photo Ben swestoyz posted to AW originally:

The forty-inch has presence that the thirty-inch doesn't quite possess. Colors do a lot for this stove, it's weird how the white is so different looking…maybe the colors bring out the details, a little more. Thanks again for sharing what is common knowledge for many here.

Remember that the shots I posted are also professional product photography - styled, lit and retouched to bring out detail.

A Craigslist photo shot with someone's camera phone just can't do that.

BTW, do you love the way the oven's propped on the Spacemaker 30, with that rhinoceros-sized turkey shoved over into one corner and all those twice-baked potatoes around two sides of it, to make the oven look as large as possible?

The 40-incher is also fun - a steamship round and two big Pyrex casseroles in the main oven, plus an angel food cake in the small one. It wasn't subtle - Momma was getting some room to spread out!

That's not a turkey, it's a Dinosaur and dinosaur eggs, stuffed twice. Those ads are interesting after seeing the retina display sharpness in ads in magazines today. I like the softer look, and in fact, many of the other older ads, for their softness..and other things going on.

Yes, the photos suggest larger oven sizes in side, especially the smaller stove. It suggests a bigger oven.

I wonder…anyone have this stove as a daily driver?

I like that Canary Yellow range a lot, but the placement of it at the end of the cabinet run is not good. Someone would be likely to burn their arm. One of my aunts had hers located like this, and I always had to be careful when going around that corner.

I don't think I've ever seen a turkey that big before - I wonder how many pounds it is?

Tom:

That bird looks to be upwards of 20 pounds.

So far as the placement of the range is concerned, it's all about product photography, not actual use. A photo of a range built into the middle of a run of cabinets diminishes the range's presence. Putting it at the end of a run gives the range more presence. Considering that these ranges were by-grannies expensive, it was probably considered to be of the utmost importance to make them look as impressive as possible.

That having been said, my own preference is to have a range at the end of a run. This is because ranges of a given nominal size (30 inches, 40 inches, whatever) will vary slightly in size between makes and models. If you build a range tightly into the middle of a run, it can be very inconvenient to find that its replacement is half an inch wider. If the range is at the end of the run, no harm done. I do not, however, have children to worry about, and I can see how that might make a difference.

Sandy, this one looks like an aqua twin to the yellow double ovens (and matching cooktop with controls including sensi-temp in the range hood) that just arrived from Salt Lake City, thanks to Alan... a beautiful set. In fact this set is tempting... so that I can rotate my kitchen between coppertone, yellow, and aqua!

They're very similar, but the clock and meat thermometer dials are different (dark on the Yellow version, light on the Turquoise), and the inserts on the oven door handles are different, too - metal-look on the Yellow one, black pebble-texture on the Turquoise.

Still, I have not seen either version before.

I'm thinking that those differences are from one year to the next - say, 1965 vs. 1966, or similar. GE's trim differences were from model to model, and those two ovens seem to have the same equipment, meaning they were not different models.

Post# 801628 , Reply# 81   12/30/2014 at 22:24 (3,413 days old) by moparguy (Virginia)

I was wondering if some of the trim differences were based on the color of the stove... but your thought of them being a year apart sounds more likely.

Sandy/Jeff/Tom: just reading your comments and great looking stacked GE's, I was wondering ….on the yellow stacked unit, there's a cluster of buttons(for cooktop) and there's none for the turquoise unit. I've never seen those controls on top of an oven for burners! How would that be a good selling point versus having the buttons nearer the cooktop in front, on wall if that's what they were still offering, or on top of the burner clusters?

If you haven't seen these before Sandy, imagine what else is out there, to be discovered. :-)

The photo of the yellow wall oven is showing a range hood sitting on top of the wall oven.  Two completely separate items.

Note the plug-in connector on top of the range hood, for connecting to the surface unit.  I've always loved this setup.

Lawrence is right... most cooktops had the controls either on the cooktop, or on a panel that was mounted on the wall or cabinet, but this is my favorite, and most difficult to find, with the controls in the range hood. And this one even has among those controls the sensi-temp control for the right front burner!

That refrigerator in Reply #95 is really sweet.  We had one of these refrigerators when I was a kid, and at the time I hated it.  I suppose it was because it was so small - as if we didn't have a REAL refrigerator.  But my opinion has come full-circle and now I think they are so cool.  I love the design of the handle combined with the logo across the front.  So clean and simple!

If it were opposite-handed, and white, and local, and free......

I uninstalled and picked up this DW today, it does indeed appear to be almost never used. It is actually a little newer than I guessed from looking at the picture. It is a SD400D4 model or TOL 1967 DW, it is the first of the side winder motor DWs.

I already have a SC800E [ Americana one model year newer and almost the same DW otherwise ] in the museum it was a convertible portable which I converted to a BI model, the 67 DW is in a little better shape so if anyone wants the SC800E it is here for the taking, otherwise I will take a few parts off and scrap it soon.

The Americana is avocado.

John - glad that DW got a good home and will be in a lot of GE appliance company. It's amazing, to me, that such appliances still exist in such condition.

John, I was wondering if it had the side winder motor when I saw the "new" extra wide wash arm.  "new" motor/pump design with the "old" control panel.  "Interesting".  what does the 800E look like inside and out?  How does it differ than this one?  I have a feeling it may be more differentiated than you think.  I'm glad you saved it.

Late 60s TOL GE DWs

Hi Bob, there are only a few differences other than styling that I see, the earlier model has a wetting agent dispenser that has to be set for each cycle if you want WA dispensed. They both have the gentile-wash option for Christal-China that air-rates the water to reduce washing pressure.

Interestingly they both have the little wash-arm under the SW basket, but on the newer E model DW it was NEVER connected to water FROM the factory, GE found out that having this feature connected caused some type of performance problems and whenever we serviced one of these early DWs with this feature we were to install a rubber plug under the SS arm to stop all water flow through it.

By the time the E model was assembled GE stopped hooking up the SS arm in the factory, BUT continued installing the silly little wash arm till the sales literature could be up dated and the feature deleted, you have to wounder how many people wondered why the SS arm was always in the same position at the end of a DW cycle, LOL.

Thank you John.  I kind of liked having to manually set the jet dry dispenser.  there are times I would not want it used and times to use it.

I'd love to have the fridge in post #47.. There was one similar to it for sale about 4-1/2 hours north of me and I almost got it but the seller sold it to someone else even thought I contacted her about it first. I was loading my truck when she called me back.. I'm still sore about it months later. :-(
