Friend called me re tub remained full of water and laundry. Would not pump out. I shop vac'd the water out then tried spin position and it did spin, could see remaining water in pump swirling around, tried it again couple minutes later, it spun until motor overheat, I assume, kicked it out.Tried low water level, no clothes and it agitated very slowly for brief time until motor kicked out again, hot smell. Transmission pulley and pump pulley with belts on motor both easily hand turned. Can we correctly assume, as used appliance seller told me, that it is most likely the motor going, maybe start windings bad? The local parts dealer quoted $200.00 Cdn. for motor and a jumper kit-whatever that is.A610 series1 #803980LP Assuming motor-used dealer/repairer said about $110. labour $200.motor=310.or so, he sells used direct drive Whirlpool/Kenmores for $329. including a 1 year parts and in home service warranty.same money just about. If motor is plug and play I would attempt install but jumper kit? scares me. Comments please and what would you advise.

Yay Vintage Maytag! -strange problem resolution

My initial posting neglected to mention laundry room lights would dim when agitation or spin would start, or the freezer turn on, or running gas dryer would stop when washer spin activated.Important CLUE as it turned out. Friend and I measured voltage at various outlets one side 105V,other 135V or so. Even stranger to me the laundry outlets are split duplex outlets wired with a single 14/3 cable-shared neutral white wire-red and black going to respective half of outlet and its own breaker in box just 6 feet away and both next to each other on same side of breaker box- and yet still the 105V vs 135V. Remembering hearing that an illegal grow-op or high current draw basement machine shop in residential area could cause electrical problems I called electric utility, a lineman was in area so 1/2 hour later he was there. Turns out a tree branch near utility pole was rubbing the line slightly loosening the connection- two hours later new supply line, electrics at 120V, and the Maytag once again smoothly and quietly running, a shining porcelain and steel tribute to American Appliance Engineering and Construction.Yes, a 1000RPM spin like my F&P would be nice but given it is well over 25 years old we will forgive that. I have't looked yet but anyone know cheap and easy source for the lid safety switch and polyurethane ball hinges? Plastic plunger wearing down, want to future proof replacement. Thanks, Walter.
