Not sure if I am placing this thread in the right forum or If it should go in the other forum (< 20 yrs). My Maytag dryer is Mod.# LDE9806ACE and by the serial no. 1996. It's had one repair that I can remember, replacing a broken belt and at that time I asked the tech. to clean and do a maintenance check on the innards.

About 2 weeks ago during drying I noticed the top of the cabinet felt hotter than what I remembered. So did some checking here and elsewhere into what can be the cause. Lint clog/restriction in the venting, broken cycling thermostat, broken/sagging heating coil contacting the housing, worn out felt seals. Narrowed it down to the seals.

Son pulled out the drum and the seals were worn out. Rollers and idler wheel look in good shape. The belt and glides while not falling apart show signs of wear, so ordered the 2 seals, 2 glides, and belt.

While waiting for the parts did cleanup of the interior. In removing the blower wheel found the front retaining ring was missing. As I moved the wiring to clean the base a black wire fell off where it was connected to the heater housing. In connecting the wire back on found that the female disconnect had no "grip" at all and at that point I saw that approx. 1 1/2" of the wire preceding the terminal had the black insulation partially melted exposing some of the copper. The other end of the black wire connects to the motor.

Did more checking as to how to fix this and found to cut back to good wire and crimp on a high temp. female disconnect. From what I had been reading the high temp. terminals are not easily found at local hardwares and the terminal need to be ordered. Decided to check an appliance parts place owned by a retired appliance tech. Told him about the burnt wire that connects to the heater and that I was looking for a high temp. female disconnect to crimp on to clean wire. He said he had the fix for that kind of problem and came back with what looks like the red wire and yellow nut in the link below. I did ask if the red wire was going to match the 14 AWG 600V black wire it was going to spliced to and he said yes. He said the terminal was going to be wider compared to the original but it would not be a problem. The wire and nut were not packaged so don't know if it is the exact same part below or not.

I had a heck of a time trying to strip the black wire, not taking out some of the copper strands along with the insulation. Finally got it done and when I compared the stripped ends of black and red wires side by side it looked to me like the red wire had more strands (thicker). I checked the red wire for the AWG but being a short piece it was not on there. Went ahead and connect the two wires with the nut and wrapped the connection with white glass cloth high temp. electrical tape. Been wondering how long the black wire has been like that and thankful that it didn't take out the heater/etc.

Now to the spring washers. When I removed the rollers the spring washers stayed behind so didn't see right away that one of the spring washers has two flat outer edges opposite each other as compared to the other spring washer which is round. Thinking the flat sided washer should be as round as the other, I don't want it to cause a problem down the road with the roller if I reuse it. If I had noticed it earlier, I would have included 2 fiber washers when I ordered the parts.

Came back here to do some checking on spring washers and found a thread where it was said the spring washers can be replaced with mylar washers purchased at a hardware store.

Hoping that someone can tell me if the mylar washers are found in the same area where the metal bolts/nuts/washers are located or in another department in the hardware store.

Those spring washers should be removed.

I have repaired dryers where the hardened steel spring washers cut thru the metal of the bulkhead, causing the roller and shaft to fall off. Maytag stoped using the spring washers a log time ago, and sends flat plastic washers with the new rollers.

spring washer scouring the bulkhead.

When I cleaned the roller shafts, I did see that there is some light circular scouring on the bulkhead.
