OK, get your minds out of the gutter--no this isn't in the wrong forum!

I've lived across from a golf course for several years now, and have a habit of collecting wayward balls from lawns and farm fields nearby. I can't stand golf myself, but am to the point where I've got so many of these things, I've got to start giving them away to friends and family.

Now many of these, especially if I got them from the farm field, are quite grungy looking. So how does a washer guy clean these up before giving them away?? You guessed it!!

Started out with slow agitation, then had the idea to throw in 3 bath sized car towels/rags. I think they were the key to cleaning out all of the hundreds of dimples on the balls. I decided to try fast agitation, just to see how violent it might be, and it really wasn't too bad, so I never went back. Normal agitation actually seemed a little quieter, too. I alternated some soak time in between about 20 minutes total wash agitation.

Anyway, this is the finished product, after I removed the towels. They cleaned up great, and about the only spots I found on any of them were permanent scuff marks.

Ironically, I got this idea from my aunt... When I was a kid, she had a large garden, and she would wash her potatoes in her washer. I was snooping in their basement one time and opened her washer to find clean potatoes. Of course I had to ask her about it!

No gutters in here.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having a dedicated ball washer.

Mom and a couple friends sometimes washed cucumbers in preparation for canning pickles back in the day.

I worked with a woman years ago that lived on a golf course and her husband did the exact same thing in their washer with two old towels.  Lucy brought me an egg carton of her husband's balls and they were very clean.  I believe she had a Kenmore direct-drive washer.

I grew up on a golf course... Several people (including the colf course) would wash all the stray balls in old wringers.. Only time i've actually ever seen a ringer washer work or in life... Maytags at that

My mom also used the delicate cycle to wash cucumbers for canning.

Launderess, are you outing yourself as an AC/DC fan? You're referencing a fairly early, rather deep album cut. Are you a headbanger, dear? 😀

Cucumbers in the Miele at our house... Stuffed in a pillowcase, of corse. Just as with LEGO.
My grandma still uses her washer as a salad spinner if she wants to freeze bigger quantitys of washed vegetables.

somwhere

along the way, I too grew a set.
Maybe it was when they were playing "My ding-a-ling" on the radio about 1972.
I didn't come out of my shell till about '77 though. I wasn't a crowd follower nor popular.
I'm not good at golf for sure. I think golf courses are nice though.
Maybe those stray golf balls could be sold at a roadside stand across from the course at a discounted price over sporting goods shop prices??
Bundle half a dozen up in nylon net bags for $5 or so. It sure beats hanging two tennis balls in one off of a truck trailer hitch.
