I was quite happy to find this! Last year before the slant top models.

It's still in my truck, I'll post more when I get back home!

What a great find!  I have one that I have never used that is branded "Philco".  I have ran it, but never used it to wash dishes.  You will love the sound of the motor when it starts.  Such a unique sound.  Also lot's of splashy sounds hitting the outer tub.  It does move a ton of water while washing!

Yours is in much better shape than the one I have.

Here's the ad for the previous year's DW-ITL model, the only difference I can see is that this one has no light switch.

Mine certainly is one of the last GM Frigidaires with a porcelain interior or one of the few with the Super Surge wash action and a porcelain tub! D&M porcelain is still much better than that blue Plastisol coating that Frigidaire used on it's other models then!

Very Neat Find Phil.

combo52's profile picture

It is amazing how much GM-Frigidaire got D&M to modify one of their [ standard ] TL portable DWs for the Frigidaire name. It is the first time I have ever seen a non-D&M wash arm and completely different racks in one of there creations.

Its too bad you will not be able to come down for the Wash-In next week as you could bring this DW down and we could run it next to the REAL FD TL slant top CI portable DW that I picked up a little while ago and compare overall performance etc. We are going to be using portable DWs to wash all the dishes on Saturday evening.

Everyone knows what a fan I am of D&M DWs, but overall I dough that there would much longevity difference between the real FD and your new D&M FD DW and at least you can find parts for your version, LOL.

John, I also wish I could go to the convention! It really bothers me to miss that.

For now. I'll have to play alone with that poor D&M, I'll try to compare it with my 1965 Frigidaire Super DW-STJ, an impeller D&M or with my later DW-INR Imperial slant top, the model below yours (and the only model that was available here in Canada).

D&M made this for GM?

Every Kenmore top load D/W I ever saw, and that was several, had a split upper roto-rack.
Not to beg to differ, but Ford also owned Philco then, but I suppose they could have sold things to each other.
I think Ford did use some Frigidaire axial automobile A/C compressors in the 70's.

Phil - what a cool find!  This is the first I've seen this panel/design.  I guess when you have a 1960's General Motors coming to you to make a dishwasher, D&M would probably do anything to get and keep that contract (I mean, look what they made for Sears!).

But I only count 4 cycles not 5.  I guess they consider "cancel" a cycle?  Still a cool machine.  We had the slant top model of this for a few years when I was a kid.  Loved the sound it made when you pressed the cancel button.  I remember ours having more buttons though - maybe a plate warm?  I think it was a "Custom Imperial" if that makes any sense.  Was a long time ago.

The Custom Imperial Slant Top model from 1969 had 5 cycles, no plate warmer but a pots and pans cycle with 3 washes. I have the built-in version of that dishwasher. 1969 is also the year when they introduced the auxiliary wash arm.

now I remember the Pots and Pans button.  Was a neat machine.  We got it when it was only a few months old from friends who didn't want to roll it around.  My Dad bypassed the sink connector and plumbed it in next to the stove.  We used it until '72 when we redid the kitchen and got a TOL Roper built in.  It then went to friends who never installed it and left it sitting in their garage for years and years.  Have no idea what happened to it - I suspect it went to the dump :-(

D&M made their own fluorescent starters even back in the day. Does anyone know where their plant, or plants were?

Wow D&M Florescent Light Starters

combo52's profile picture

It amazes me that they bothered to get a starter manufacturer to private label this part for them, D&M probably never even built a thousand of these TOL DWs for FD that even had a florescent light bulb, and there certainly weren't any built-in DWs with florescent lights, LOL.

John, that's exactly what I thought! And at least, Frigidaire probably thought they could sell  their rebranded starters through their dealer network (and I bet they didn't sell many either!). D&M didn't even sell their dishwashers under their own names, they were private labeling their own products to sell to other brands. I thought their only signature was the shape of their tags, not the name on it!

Note that the tag on the 1968 dishwasher lacks the CSA approval, it's there on my 1965 DW-STJ. It's strange since I got this machine in Canada and it's a model that was sold here.

No CSA Approval

combo52's profile picture

They probably couldn't get a Canadian approval on a DW with a florescent light and though no one would notice, LOL.

And you may have only one of three that were imported to Canada.

I just tried not to pre-rinse anything that went in the dishwasher to see how it performed (not something I am used to do!), the dishes came out clean and dry even if I shortened the dry cycle!

I got some fog in the camera when I took pictures of the clean (and hot!) dishes. Not exactly a full load though but I had plates that I couldn't even try to fit in the 1963 spray tube dishwasher!

Owner is concerned. *LOL*

Having to shift things off the top and back to load and unload is getting on my nerves.

If one can find a nice Miele 18" unit and one of those Ikea "built in to portable" kits, the GE Mobile Maid may not be long for this world. *LOL*

After living with a top loading dishwasher for better part of almost two years now you can see why the design faded out and never was brought back.

Some top loaders are a bit more complicated to load as their top racks either need to have a section removed or folded (and left empty so it could be folded or removed easily) to load the lower rack.

But this design allows to lift the top racks easily without unloading them. What I don't like about portable dishwashers is that they need to be rolled to the sink and connected to it and to a wall outlet to operate. I'll probably change that eventually and connect it permanently!
