I say keep it....a little maintenance, and it will outlast just about anything on the market today.....
in fact, keep your eye out for the matching washer.......they are heavy duty machines.....

Yeah, I never got why my dad didn't like GE dryers. Even the newer ones are easy to repair when the front nylon drum glides wear out. Just get a new inner shroud with the new glides. A few bolts and all done. | ||

Belt replacement I was just given one similar to this, and it needs the belt replaced, as it squeaks. Any advise on how to do this? 1982, model DDG8280GELAD Thanks in advance. I've never done this before, and can't afford a professional. Thanks in advance. | ||

are you sure it was made in 1982? I just put in the details on appliance411.com and it's more likely to have been made in October 1989. :) | ||

 Pegster, Serial numbers are coded for the manufacture date. Model numbers indicate the year of market introduction, which doesn't necessarily reflect the production date. Some models may be in production for years. My parents have a Whirlpool wall oven that is a 1995 model-year but 2005 production date (that's an extreme example). Manufacturers typically repeat model and serial date coding on a rolling cycle ... 10 years, 12 years, 20 years, whatever it may be. The aesthetics of a given machine may need to be considered as a factor for accurate dating. | ||

Squeaky Belt ? It is not likely a bad belt, More likely the rear drum bearing, front drum slides, the idler pulley and even the motor it self is more likely than a belt making noise on a dryer like this.
Take the dryer apart and inspect, on an older dryer this is a good idea anyway to clean the machine and main motor, also inspect and clean every inch of your exhaust system for the dryer including the vent hood outside.
