So it had been a while since Phil and I spent a weekend at Jon's eating all his food, drinking all his liquor, exhausting his dog, and using up all his electrcity and since the ol' Focus wagon had survived winter storage, we decided to hop in the car and head south on Friday evening.
But we found we had a mission when we arrived - Jon wanted to work on his "Fringe Frigidaire" that quit spinning on him. He knew it was a clutch issue and figured it would need some kind of adjustment. Well, it turned out to be one of those 'fix, test, and fix again' cycles... But we had to try! |

Jon made us an amazing fresh fish dinner and cocktails. We didn't really feel much like working on washers after that... LOL

We started off the day Saturday with Jon's buckwheat & blueberry pancakes and me playing with some new toys I had picked up on our way down to Boston. |

Now, back down to the basement!
We tried to adjust the clutch using the Frigidaire recommended service procedure. It was very likely that whoever wrote the procedure never actually DID it...
The goal of the adjustment was to raise the clutch plate to higher notch that would enable the clutch to engage and get the tub spinning.
The 'special Frigidaire adjustment tool' didn't actually fit the clutch, so Jon and Phil took the clutch apart.
It wasn't obvious... I'll leave it at that... |

Fast forward to Sunday. We started the day with a vacuum coffeemaker challenge - the unused GE VS the Sunbeam Beehive top Coffeemaster. The GE won. My bias to GE appliances has NOTHING to do with that verdict. No, really...
Back down to the washer...
After a series of adjustments, tests, and re-adjustments, we did get the Fringe Frigidaire running again. So, we had to test it. We hauled it outside and test-washed a load of laundry!

However, sigh, the Frigidaire was still not quite spinning fast enough. It will probably need a whole new clutch alas.
Now, while Jon and Phil worked, I was videoing the process. I tried to boil down the process into this video. It looked good for a while there, but it was just not quite good enough...

After all that work, Phil was happy to get a chance to test-drive the Frigidaire Elite (a dream machine of his). It is a very, very cool machine indeed!! |

By this time, Canyon kept texting me to say he was lonely and Hubby kept texting me to say he was hungry so we loaded up the Focus wagon and headed north again.
Yes, that does look full, doesn't it?
Whatever was I whisking across the border this time?? |

Ta-daa! I am now the proud owner of a 1957 Speed Queen automatic (a machine that I have been chasing for what seems like forever)!

And finally, I got the '59 GE Princess dishwasher that I bought from Will last fall back to the Ogden Appliance Musuem. I need to do a full evaluation of it, but I am already thinking that this machine will provide parts to finally get my turquoise '59 Princess 100% operational. That only took 10 years now... LOL More on this and the Speed Queen to come in separate threads.
Thanks Jon! It was a fun weekend!! |

Is the same model that replaced our 55 Pulsamatic in 1969, and washed many many loads for nearly 18 years. |

I got a few text-pics of the Chicken A-la King, but it was too late for me to catch the noon plane to Boston.
Looks like you guys had a really great time, Artey loves company. I think I may have a whole new clutch and various parts for the washer in stock. Jon won't be without RapiDry for long, hopefully. |

Nice pictures, Paul! Looks like you all had a good time. That elite 1-18 looks amazing, stuff legends are made of. |

I'll admit it, it wasn't exactly a blind taste test - something more along the lines of one of my "totally unscientific washer (or dishwasher) tests"... LOL
However, the coffee from the GE seemed to be more mellow than the Sunbeam. I think that brewing in all-glass pot may have been a factor. Now, if I could just find the flipping stove unit for a later-model GE glass vacuum potI got last fall, I could do a better test. Stay tuned! |
