I have finally summoned up the courage to try and fix my 70s vintage Maytag Ga208 that needs a tub seal. I wanted to ask does anybody know what seal Kit I need and where to find it. Google seems to not tell me much of anything and doesnt believe the Ga208 even exists. Also which spannar do I need. Thanks all!

The model number for searching parts is A208.

The leading G is a code for the color.

This is the bearing kit.

This is the tub seal kit.

This is an example of the spanner wrench.

Use this mounting stem, it is the older and better design before Maytag went the to leak prone lip seal. Includes the agitator seal and ring.

Really amazing this guy has so many of them available, they're rare as hens teeth these days.

I noticed that on the ebay listing for the seal kit, there are a couple of spanner offers if you scroll down.

noticed that on the ebay listing

I get my best deals on Ebay.

Prices beat Amazon on most items (and I don't contribute to their
slave like working conditions).

Plus no sales tax (yet), often free shipping and easy returns. A couple of times the seller gave me a refund and let me keep the item rather than pay shipping back.

Good Shepherd, thank you for the Ebay listing on the tub seal. I think i may buy one and sit on it in case my seal ever goes bad. Which it probably will at some point.

When I replace the tub seal do I have to do the bearing as well? Is there anywhere I can look to see how to do this? Ive never done one before

Also, stupid question, which dirrection is the thread to loosen, is it normal left hand turn or is it backward. Somebody once told me they were reverse threads

do I have to do the bearing as well

You don't have to if the bearing is in good shape. The wicking in the bearing could be re-lubed with turbine oil cleaned it up and reinstalled.

However, it usually gets replaced if for no other reason as preventive maintenance.

Since the washer is mostly apart at that point, it's not much more work to put in a new bearing, plus it would suck to get it all back together and have the bearing fail somewhere down the road and have do the job all over again.

(Threads are left-hand. I.e counter-clockwise to loosen).

Left-hand threads---

jeff_adelphi's profile picture

are clockwise to loosen, counter-clockwise to tighten. And don't forget to remove the locking set screw in the tub mounting stem before removing.

Thanks Jeff.  That's what I thought.

To clear up any confusion for the OP, yes, it's a reverse thread.

Im having trouble getting the old bearing off, its really stuck on there. Any tricks to get it?

Post# 1008889 , Reply# 15   9/28/2018 at 13:48 (2,036 days old) by good-shepherd (New Jersey)

You mean the tub bearing I presume? They usually press out with foot pressure being careful not to bend the tub.

Could try large channel lock pliers to twist it loose.

Sad news folks. After spending a ton of money on parts and several hours of work I discovered a rust hole in the tub that is unfixable. So unless I can find a new tub which I highly doubt, the washer is DOA and I have a tools and seals to sell for a 50 year old washer....really bummed

Maytag Washer Tub Bearings

If it is in good condition just clean and relubricate it, I have never seen one fail unless the tub seal leaks and ruins the bearing.
