As a new guy to this website I can see the wealth of knowledge that you other guys have and I have to admit that I am rather jealous of your collections bit it has made me remember the machines I have used and seen over the past 22 years of my life so I decided to compile a chronological memory and list of every machine to share with you.

1982 my mum and dad marry not sure when 1st washer arrived as mum had her own house before she married. At a guess 1979

1984 born

1986 first memory of the machine my mum had which was either a Frigidaire or Kelvinator Automatic FL (cant remember) which at the time in the UK were both budget brands and would have been all mum could afford.
I think it was a 600rpm model and looked very similar to nicks ‘79 hottie but with a dial like a Hoover electron, im not sure if it was Hotpoint made and re badged with a different dial or what it was.
2nd memory is my great Nan used to let me stand in her 70s Hotpoint liberator twin tub. Empty and dry of course.

1987 about - my maternal grandparents had a Quartz ‘1983 model which absolutely fascinated me, every time we visited I soon learned and used to press the on switch and press the door button to open it, close the door switch it off and repeat the procedure until it was time to go home. It never once broke down in the 14 years they had it. A friend at playschool mum had this machine too and I got a slapped hand for trying to do the door thing at their house lol.

1988 I remember going to rumbelows with my folks and it was around this time they bought a grey Candy Domino 4 1000 rpm. It was a reasonable machine and did a family of 5s wash for a good 4 years but this machine was the curse of the devil to my mum.
Having 3 kids with quite mucky clothes and lots of knitted woolly jumpers from my great gran included my mum used to sort the load normally into colours but not fabric types. Then she used to set the wash dial to 95*c white cottons and set the vari temp dial to 40*c so that everything woollies and all had a long wash at 40.and we always used ariel too. Well most of the time. This carried on with every machine she had after insisting new machines had to have vari temp. The t shirts and other stuff she has ruined makes me cringe.

My paternal grandparents had a black Philco bendix autowasher which I am vague about which was replaced in 1992 with a white Philco like the one on the Tesco Value washing detergent packs. The liquid bottle has a better pic for those who shop Tesco .
In 2000 at the same time we got our candy their Philco went and they bought a Belling Wash Wize which was good and still in service today although my Nana passed away 3 years ago.

1992 the candy’s bearings went and mum ill being able to find/ afford a new machine she used to reach down the back of the machine with a hammer and knock the bearings back in before each new load. After about 6 months enough was enough and we got an Electra 1000 deluxe in blue panel trim (creda made Hotpoint) this did 1 wash before being sent back to curry’s. It had no vari temp. we had the candy in the garage waiting to go the tip and this was re installed until we finally got an Electrolux EWF 1171 or something. This was zanussi made but with a vari temp dial. It boasted jetsystem and a heavy soil button which funnily mum never used but always her programme A white wash set at 40. the programmes were set out odd. Prewash was prog R at the end of the dial with its own stop. After this was A white cottons B colour fast C non colourfast D rinses F softener G long spin

mum has also until recently never trusted softener dispenser compartments in drawers as she found the softener drained away before the right time but that was no doubt her over filling so on every machine until the LG she always used to run a separate rinse and fast spin adding conditioner then.

Sept 1995 I started high school and guess what was the home economics machine? Only a HOOVER LOGIC 1200! Which was conveniently at the top of the class room where we sat to do theory work. It was always great if the assistant had put it on and our lessons had started. Pure viewing pleasure, as I always sat at the front of the class and could never wait for the rinse cycle to start. Check out the distribution with water and I too love the 2 stage spin. Upto 800 for 4 mins then slow a bit AND whoooooshhhh UPTO 1200! The teacher used to wash the t towels on the wool wash E which was on the cottons side of the timer. So I got to see the whole of the cycle with it being about 50 mins long.

Does anybody know why the wool cycles have been changed to delicates side of programmers? On Hoover and Hotpoint’s they were given cotton rinses and fast spins. Although the wash was the delicate high water level end of the cotton wash. And what did the wool button on Hoovers do? Anybody know?

1996 my great nan had a fitted kitchen installed and chose an integrated servis rainwave which was basic. You know about these machines so im not elaborating. Pants it was I tell ya!

2000 FEB, well the electrolux died after years of true gruelling labour. If it had been used right on shorter cycles im sure we would still have it but alas.
It was replaced by another Candy the ACTIVA 1000.
WOW what a machine. Vari temp and a spin selector although it was never used lower than max 1000 anyway but it was novel for me at the time.
This used to fill with water but not via the dispenser. It tumbled normally for 5 mins then would go into distribute and the jetsystem jet would start to spray water over the load. At the same time another jetsystem flushed water from the tub into the dispenser to wash away the powder. It was a good system but it meant everytime you washed trainers the grit would remain in the bleach compartment and had to wash it out. It was a good one to watch but very unreliable.

2000 May the candy died and GIAS were not prepared to fix it. The model was discontinued and mum was told by Gias to go to a shop and choose a Hoover machine as they were more reliable and costs would be met.
So off she popped and came back with a Hoover Quattro 1300 express.
PANTS PANTS PANTS.
Had Power jet TM (jetsystem) but that’s all. Boring no distribution washes no nothing.
The only thing was the rather excited distribution phase on the woollies final spin. Nickuk your spec edition Hoover is the spittin image of this machine but ours had vari spin dial.

July 2000 I started work as a trainee chef at a local pub. The kitchen t towel washer was a Zanussi aqaucycle turbodry which was great. Best WD ever used. Still working when replaced with aquacycle 1000 separate washer and vented Zanussi dryer which were bob on and coped with 4 95* washes 2 60* colour cottons and a 40*delicates cycle for the cleaners dusters a day.

DEC 2002 after 2 brush changes the Hoover went the tip and mum cut her losses on it. It was replaced with a 2nd hand (perfect exterior and drawer insides) Hotpoint WM62 which turned up while I was at work unknowing. On entering the back door that night the moonlight illuminated the door shape and I had to double take. A HOTPOINT in our house, I nearly fainted! Guess who made an excuse to boilwash my chef white that night. Glad we had some persil and comfort in by chance too.

This was the first machine that mum used without complaining about no vari temp and the wash times were short too. It did a great job on everything considering they were rated C for wash performance.

It did 3 years stirling servce for us before the LG came in Dec 05.
Mum now washes most things on synthetics as you can set the Lg to a 1200 spin on most cycles. Which when she washes stuff is the cycle I normally use anyway so no harm done to my bloody expensive next t shirts!

2004 I got my own rented place with a whirlpool AWM 1200 which was ok but nothing special, moved into a houseshare which had indesit W123 pants again. Moved back home to my Hotpoint baby.
My great Nana passed away.

2005 moved in with my ex fiancée we had a Zanussi Quick and Clean washer with vari soil dial. Boring but very reliable, this was a top end Nexus I think.

This packed up at 9 years old when I started my regular boilwash scheme and the landlady replaced it with a Hotpoint WF000 indeshite made. It was an ok machine with the wool distribute wash and a high water level on all rinses half up the door but was only the 1000 rpm entry level aqaurius.

2005 december bought house with ex fiancée and bought the Zanussi 1400 timeline jetsystem like lavamatjons mums old one but had a dial in the center of control panel. Great machine and when the door locked and unlocked it made the click dink dink sound a quartz makes with its electronic door opener.

Well that’s me finished and I feel better for sharing the washers I have grown up with. Any questions about any of the machines just ask away.
Apologies it’s a long one but ive typed with a smile on my face all the way through!

Nick

little bit more lol

just thought i would also describe myself a bit seeing how we are getting to know each other.

i have got pretty decent cam phone (Nokia N70) with pics of the LG in action and as soon as i work out how to put pics here i will as well as maybe 1 of me but until then......
can anybody shed any light on how to do this?

am 5'9 ish i guess and all i can say is my friends reckon i look like Daniel Bedingfield?????? thats it. since i split with my ex i have lost nigh over 3 stone (was 17 stone)which is a massive achievemnt i think in 5 months or so. its great to be able to nearly wear size med clothes again.

not really been up to much since i left catering college and have now given up being a chef due to the rubbish pay.
Tesco actually pay more at managerial level than head chefs here earn for double the hours work.

other than washing machines, music and comedy are my lifes saviours.
name any artist from 1978 to virtually present and i bet i have at least 1 cd with one of their songs on and my music heroes DONT LAUGH are...... The Beatles
i had a Duran Duran period at college but that was probably the vodka intoxicating me to think i was Simon Le Bon.
and recently i seem to be listening to 90s brit pop type stuff. oasis, supergrass, dodgy, space, and the Bluetones. oh i forgot blur too. love the sinister sound of The Universal.

comedy as far as im concerned Bottom, the Young ones, League of gentlemen, Little Britain, Titty bang bang, the simpsons, red dwarf, and 2 pints lager all rock and usually have me in stitches, sad i know.

come from family of 5. mum dad me the eldest at 22 sister 20 ickle brother 18.

cant think of anything else. lifes been a bit boring lately

i would love to discuss women and their ways over many pints of beer but we split due to relationship faults of which 70percent were me. Winks at Jon ;-) but she did have loads of annoyin faults that contributed to how i felt and im convinced a split was the best thing. I got the chance to look at myself before pushing into a sham marriage.

Great story--thanks for sharing! You've been through a lot of washers for being so young. My parents bought a Kenmore Model 80 toploading washer in 1960, when I was an infant, and it was still in use when I came home after college. My mom died within a year and I replaced the STILL WORKING Kenmore with a new Whirlpool TL'er, which I had only a year before moving to take a job.

That was 1986. On my own, I've had a White-Consolidated-made Frigidaire TL'er, a White-Consolidated-made Frigidaire FL'er, a KitchenAid TL'er, and now I have an Electrolux-made Frigidaire FL'er again.
