I've been looking for a Frigidaire Flair, preferably a Custom Imperial, for about 5 years. Due to their size I wanted one relatively close so that a couple hours in a pickup would retrieve it. In late October I located an RCIB-645 in MA that was only about 1/2 hour from a client so I made arrangements to see it, and ultimately bought it. Later that night at the hotel I thought I would check ebay to see what the spare parts market was like and found a second RCIB-645 about an hour from my house in PA. After some back and forth I purchased this one as well, intending to use it as a parts stove. Both are '61s, the parts stove is an early 61 with the two-handed drawer pull and the smooth side trim and the one is MA is the later version of the RCIB.

I picked up the parts stove in early Nov and went through the wiring, learning as I went. I surgically removed some janky bits of wires related to the conversion of the Speed Heat burner to an Infinite Heat burner and disabled it first, then powered it up. I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything save for the large oven element (missing) and the aforementioned Speed Heat burner was operational. The clock is intermittent as well so the timer functions aren't reliable but otherwise it was in pretty good order. Cosmetically it was beautiful, I don't know who cleaned it or what they used but it's shiny and unbelievably clean from top to bottom. It quickly became evident that the parts stove was in the running to be the main stove, however I still only had the one stove in my possession.

Last week I went back to MA to collect the original stove I had purchased, brought it home and started going through it. As I suspected the roles reversed and this stove will be the parts stove. Simply from a cleaning perspective there's no logic to trying to bring this one back. In addition, the finish on the sides and the cabinet is really rough so painting would be required. Luckily it did come with a working main oven burner so that hurdle is cleared, however this one also had the Speed Heat converted. At least it was professionally wired.

I had downloaded the Tech-Talk for the '61 models back when I first became aware of these ranges, which covers a lot of the particulars however I still have some questions I wasn't able to suss out. How does one tell if the Heat-minder is working correctly. The button is operational and the burner responds to the control knob however it's not clear to me exactly what the purpose is. The owner's manual describes setting it to a specific temp when using it as a griddle, what function does the button serve? Secondly, is the meat tender function dependent on the probe? The owners manual I have is from the RCIH-645 and it seems this way but the controls are different in the later model.

Finally, any suggestions (or offers) on where to find a temp probe? Is there a difference between the years? Also toying with the idea of re-fitting the Speed Heat setup if someone has known good working parts. If anyone has any other accessories for these ranges, roasting pans, rotisseries, etc, I'd be interested in hearing about them. I sent the spare clock to GEneral TIME RepairS yesterday, if it isn't a cosmetic match when it comes back I'll send the one original to this stove to be repaired as well. Looking forward to enjoying the range for years to come.

Thanks for reading!
Aaron

Beautiful range - congratulations on your find(s)!  I know nothing about Frigidaires, but your question about pressing a button in conjunction with using a griddle "might" work like the Sensi-Temp burners on the GE.  That is, when a particular button is pressed it locks the Sensi-Temp burner (front) with the rear burner to provide uniform heat under the griddle.  I've never seen a Flair griddle, so don't know if it fits over two adjacent burners or not; just saying this could be a possibility.

Great buy! I wanted to offer a tip on lighting up your Flair. Lift the oven doors just slightly (to the broil position or so) to block the flourescent fixture. They should stay up and if not are easy to adjust. It cuts the direct glare of the bulb and the glass doors subtly bounce the light back into the ovens and up onto the controls. I miss my Flair immensely and never ever had its lights off. I bought all of the accessories ever made (except the rotisserie) on eBay. The broiler pan (be sure it has the correct rack) was particularly effective if not a complete pain to wash after using, but I didn't mind. The heat minder burner works like an electric skillet (definitely get the aluminum "Kant-slide" griddle) to reach and hold a temp. When's it's broken, the burner becomes an on/off burner at any setting - great for boiling pasta water but not much else. I found out in the middle of a batch of pancakes that mine went. I ordered a temp probe but it didn't work for me and we ended up moving before I had a chance to investigate. I remember reading that they were often stored in the oven which ruined them. I really just wanted one to use the temp feature of the stove. My speed heat had already been converted to a regular infinite heat burner when I got it. I looked into converting it too, but didn't. Read the use and care manuals in ephemera, tells you everything about how to use properly, incl the accessories too. Congratulations!

Thanks for all the kind words. Tonight I replaced the neon element on the large oven for the bake function. It was far fainter than the others and since I have the spares, why not. Great info leefree, thanks for sharing. Any idea what temp probe's part number was, or where you got it? That's probably the one feature I'd like to have working the most. Although the main oven seems to be about 30° hot so I need to adjust the temp controller first. I also noticed that I don't have a gear drive in the back of the oven for the rotisserie, not going to lose any sleep over that one but will keep my eye out for the rest of the accessories.

No idea what the part number was for the temp probe, and I think they were made for other Frigidaire ovens of the era. Could be wrong or maybe that's why mine didn't work. Also note that the suggested temperatures on the meat tender will incinerate whatever you're cooking compared to modern cooking guidelines. And even to guidelines of the day if you ask Julia Child. Honestly, if you stick a temp probe in thats connected to an alarm when a certain temp is reached, you can be your own "meat tender" and turn the oven off yourself. Agree, not nearly as magical or fantastical as a built in funtion and I FULLY understand support your mission to restore it to operation. I hope you find one. They were all over eBay back then (where I got mine) and not expensive. My aunt is still using the Flair my grandmother bought when she remodeled that kitchen in the early 60's. When I was little I liked to sit in front of the KitchenAid KDS-14 while it thundered and roared the dishes clean. But the Flair was always lit that I can remember, and mine when I had one a few years ago, was too. (It provided the primary light in my kitchen most of the time!) Piece of art. Definitely get the oven temp calibrated. Best baking oven - Provides perfect, even heat.
