Dear all I have been routing around for clips and catalogues advertising WMs in the UK for ages. I have attached an article from about 1985ish.

I've been trying to get hold of an old catalogue from the 70-80s but they are now so expensive on ebay. Do any of you have any pics or scans you could share.

Many thanks

Rob

Wow Rob,

This is wonderful material. How great that you are sharing this with us. Looking at these older models is like a trip down memory lane!

So many washers, so little time!!

Robert:

What fun machines!! This seems to be UK version of Consumer Reports. I love the little Hotpoint Twin Tub (complete with wood top), and was surprised to see Hotpoint top loaders!

What an awesome collection/description of machines! So many brands I've never seen or heard of. Who manufactured the Neff machines? Are most of these brands still in production today, or have some of these companies been swallowed up like they have in the US?

Keep posting these types of great pics and info. They really help us understand the European machines!!

Venus :-)

Makes in the UK

robm's profile picture
Thanks for your comments.

That particular Hotpoint toploader was made for a number of years well into the 90s. Alas it is made no longer.

I'm not an expert on makes but here goes -

Hotpoint, Ariston and Indesit are all now made by Merloni. If you look at the new machines they look generally similar, just with different doors and fascias etc..

The same is true for Zanussi, AEG and Electrolux. I have not seen Electrolux for sometime now. If you look carefully you can see that Electrolux and Zanussi are essentially the same in the above photos, even then.

Candy and Hoover have now merged and are a shadow of their former selves.

Creda did seem to merge with Hotpoint for a while but again I have not seen them for sometime

Servis are nothing like the machine above (I'm afraid I don't know much about them)

Bosch are still going but I don't think are made in Germany, whereas Miele still is.

Phillips is now made by Whirlpool and Asea changed to Asko and is now branded as Maytag.

Apologies and comments welcome if I have got this all wrong.

Rob

Wow! Thanks for scanning all those reviews - they are simple fascinating! Nice that back then Photoshop and computer programs like that weren't mainstream; so we get proper in-situ pictures unlike the ones nowadays! (the worst ones have to be the pics of Hotpoint washers with dryer drums inside and vice versa!)

I love the pictures of those Servis Quartz machines - that's the same model Darren has, and they look just beautiful, almost like commercial machines! Shame that Servis is in the state it is nowadays... :-(.

Venus - Neff is part of the BSH group; and is basically a division of the Bosch group which focuses on built in kitchen appliances - basically Bosch machines but with a different name stuck on :-).

One of the most amazing things about those ads are the prices!!! No wonder people were slow to upgrade to automatics!!

Brands

foraloysius's profile picture
Rob,

There used to be two Merloni companies. One is now the Indesit company (former known as Merloni Elettrodomestici) that owns Indesit, Ariston, Creda and Hotpoint. The other Merloni company called Antonio Merloni owns Servis as it's called in the UK. In other countries these machines are sold under different names, like Edy in the Netherlands, EBD in Germany, Ardo in Italy, etc. etc. Antonio Merloni also owns Asko. Asko machines are sold in the UK under the Maytag label (interesting to see how long that will last) and as Cylinda in Skandinavia.

In the above photos you might see a similarity between Electrolux and Zanussi but they were really different machines still. AEG was much later taken over by Electrolux, a while after AEG had sold it's appliance branch to Daimler Benz. Electrolux is actually the biggest company in Europe. They own a lot of brands, AEG, Zanker, Zanussi, Zoppas, Elektro-Helios, Electrolux (ofcourse) Marynen, Zanker and others.

The Philips label doesn't exist anymore, Whirlpool wasn't allowed to keep carrying the Philips label after they had completely taken over Philips' white goods branch in 1991. The double name Philips-Whirlpool was only used from 1989-1991, the two years for which the joint venture between both companies lasted. Whirlpool also owns Bauknecht.

The more expensive line of Bosch washers are still made in Germany. However, there are rumours Bosch also has plans to close down it's German factory. I guess they were inspired by AEG. Bosch white goods are manufactured by the BSH group (Bosch und Siemens Haushaltsgeräte). This group owns Bosch, Siemens, Constructa, Neff, Gaggenau, Thermador and a few less known labels.

Not all Miele products are made in Germany. Their toploaders, washer-dryer combo's, their built-in washers and dryers and their Little Giants are manufactured in the Czech Republic.

More comments welcome, I haven't covered it all by far, but that is quite difficult, there are many brands on the European market.

Louis

Coppertone

foraloysius's profile picture
As a matter of fact coppertone was very popular in the late seventies and early eighties. Almost every brand needed to have a coppertone model in it's line, otherwise it would cost them a part of their market share. There were some other colors as well, but coppertone was by far the most popular color for appliances for a while.

Thank you so much for that information. It's great to speak to someone who knows what his talking about.

I had a look at your photos on your link and they are fantastic too. I am going to try and do the same and have started an album on yahoo.

Re-prices. It's amazing to think that 20 years on the prices are virtually the same.

Thank you Rob, but I think there is a lot more than I wrote down. There is a lot that I don't know!

I don't know if you have started yet, but there are better albums than Yahoo. Yahoo doesn't show the pictures full size. One of my favourite albums is Webshots, but there are others. For Webshots you have to download a little programme on your computer. Here's the link to my webshots album.

Yep, but due to inflation even though the washers are the same price or cheaper; they certainly aren't up to the same quality as they were 20 years ago :-(.

Louis thanks for the comment on Webshots. I'm a little concerned though as I want to copy a number of brochure pics and don't want to break any copyright rules. Mind you the brochures were free and are years old.

Rob and Louis,

Thank You both for the information. The "Who's Who" and the pictures gave me a great education and it was interesting to see what was stylish 20 years ago.

Thanks again,

Joe

Rob, I wanna thank you for posting these. Very fascinating to me. I get the sense, as here, so many of these brands have been absorbed through mergers & acquisitions and are no longer "available" just as here. That Neff 5041 looks like a dishwasher. Bob

Here's another one. This dates from 1983 but has no prices. Electra and Creda must be one because they look very similar.

I have Washer and Dryer catalogues from all-over

I have some unusual items in my washer and dryer literature collection. I DO HAVE many American, and Canadian from the late 50's on. I also have Japanese, British, Dutch, French, German, Australian and NZ catalogs from the mid '70's to the mid '80's. When I last traveled to Europe 1984-1989, and Japan in 1986, I naturally brought back as MANY catalogues and detergents as I possibly could carry. Could you imagine how Heavy my bags were with all that stuff?? Aside from the MANY automobile catalogs AND-another total vice-HEAPS of CD's and records I bought, I ended-up becoming a "two-legged transporter" of my beloved goods!
When I visited South America in 1988, I did NOT bring any appliance catalogs back with me. It seemed that they weren'nt as freely available in stores as elsewhere. Too bad!

Thank you Rob for that last picture. Apparently Electra labeled dryers from several brands, dryer A and B are Philips dryers.

Thanks Lee, but I think American washers and dryers are pretty neat too, especially the older ones.

Jason, you've got to set up a website with all that material. I would love to see some scans of those brochures!!

Electra was the Electricity Board's own brand, and they rebadged from several different manufacturers. They had Hoover, Philips, Creda and Merloni washers and dryers, and Candy, Philips, Zanussi and Merloni for dishwashers. They also rebadged Lec fridges and freezers.

The first machines I remember from my parents were both Electra machines - one a rebadged Hoover 800 with no detergent drawer and a slide switch to unlock the door, and the second a rebadged grey and white Creda much like the 17001 in one of the sets of pictures at the beginning of the thread.

For

Hey Guys! Thanks for the acknowledgement! I may be "bragging" about my collections, but it IS TRUE what I have here. I must be honest, though, some things I DO NOT YET OWN are my own computer and related hardware, and a digital camera/camcorder. It's gonna sound "stale"(especially since I should've recorded this), but it's SO FREAKIN' EXPENSIVE here in NYC 'burbs! I am lucky I was able to travel years ago. I don't want to alienate any new possible friends with my complaints! I would just love to share my treasures with anyone who's willing to visit me. For now, that's the only way. Cheers! Jay
