I kind of hit a wall. I have a stove I’m working on and the top is scratched to hell. My normal methods of fine sanding and polishing have not helped, in fact, made it look slightly worse.

My question is simple: I have a glass like surface that is heavily etched and scratched. Similar to a scratched up refrigerator shelf or etched glass. Before I press the nuclear button and 220 grit, I’d like to weigh my options.

Advice is appreciated.

Scratched Worn Porcelain Finish

The only correct way to fix it is to try and have it re-coated and fired at 1,500 degrees F, The next best ways to try and save it are to repaint with a good 2 part epoxy, you may also be able to sand it and clear coat which will look great but will not hold up to high heat any better than epoxy.

You fail to mention what stove top you are working on, maybe I or some one else has a good top for it.

Have you tried Bon Ami? It’s non abrasive and it does polish glass.

Send it to ....

Independence Porcelain Inc. Ask for Jeff Gaylord. Ask about having the part sent thru their kiln and having the porcelain reflowed. Comes out with a like new glass surface. They can also restore parts by stripping and refinishing factory porcelain coatings. I had a washing machine top and lid redone (removed old, added new) for not a lot of money. Excellent work.
