Depending on the type of line used, it could indeed be corded.

I just won't roll on the floor laughing because of my leg, but it certainly gave me my at least 7-minute daily dose of laughs.

And I read this in the bathtub, I just didn't kill my cellphone because it's waterproof.

In Iowa these were a very common sight, in both town and country, including the house I grew up in.  Like the ones in the picture, most were anchored with cement to survive the Iowa wind and elements.

 

All our neighbors had clotheslines like this too and most still got use in the 70s.
