Bought from someone using it as a back porch decoration and fixed up.

The first picture is of my original fridge. (Next to the washer and dryer.) It was a 1967 Whirlpool. It was really well designed. It died earlier this year.
The second picture is its replacement. A 1964 general electric. It isnt quite laid out as well, but it gets the job done in style.

Dave that 31’ Frigidaire is magnificent! What an impressive job you did on the restoration. You should be very proud. Thanks for sharing the photos. I’ll bet it looked just like this in 1931.

David has a really cool collection (pun intended). I've learned more about those vintage compressors in a week than I have in my whole life.

your 64’ and 66’ GE’s are pristine too! I would love to have either one of them as my daily driver. I always thought that the swing out shelves on GE’s were about the best design feature ever thought of for a fridge. And those beautiful blue, enameled crisper drawers are something we’ll never see again in a modern fridge. Everything is plastic, plastic and more plastic now.

I so agree with you Eddie. Hopefully I'll get the '66 back up in a few days. The verdict is still out on the '64.

31 Frigidaire

Eddie, thanks for the compliment!  I was fascinated with the belt-dries after seeing a video of one on You Tube and talking to a fellow collector who has one in need of troubleshooting.

In my research, I learned that there are a few of them still working, but they are either "survivors" that just are hanging on by a thread; or they have been repaired by someone who is unwilling to share any information.

Thereby my quest began. With my travels for work, I had an opportunity to locate this one. In case you haven't had a chance to see the videos of the repairs, here's the part 1:

Neither the freezer or ref have ever even been moved out of the space I built for them and only the refrigerator has ever been repaired [ light bulb failed at year 17, replaced with an LED ]

Even the IM in the freezer has never missed a beat, the freezer keeps a very even temperature and the ref is set at 34-35 F I have never had so much as a leaf of lettuce freeze and even leftovers keep well over a month in the refrigerator.

Beautiful KitchenAids, John. I’ve always liked the format of a full-size refrigerator and a full-size freezer installed next to each other.

Hey, that's a very short little mini-fridge!  I bet it has an equally miniature compressor. I'm not very well versed with the Hoover brand. Did they re-badge this one or is it a fully one-off design?

if I ever get a vintage refrigerator...

...I'd love to get a big, old commercial McCall or Koch, with a matching freezer. Of course, even the smallest units (single section) are as wide as a residential French door fridge, as well as much deeper and taller. A double or triple section could dwarf a kitchen, lol.

I love these old refrigerators.  Ultramatic's 1966 GE is amazing with chrome accents on the front and the style accents inside.

I'd just hate to pay the cost to run it.  In 2010 I took advantage of the federal energy rebates going on and bought a WP that is an estimated 343 KWH per year.  But boy is it ugly and cheap looking, inside and out.

How much more power do these vintage models use?

Energy Use

... Back in the 1930's, energy cost was a lot higher than it is today. I have heard figures from 5 to 7 TIMES as much, counting for cost of living adjustments.

The fridges from the era were sold with energy efficiency as a selling point. Frigidaire had their "Meter-Miser," GE had their "Thrift Unit," International Harvester had the "Tight Wad" and so forth.

By today's standards most of them would be in the middle of the highest tier of efficiency.

As vintage as what was "just a cheap box to keep things cold in" could get:

At our apartment we'd lived at up until 10-years-ago, and that's the only pic...

Sorry, that I didn't bother to get the dishwasher (it was only one knob, (Also GE) with a slider switch for heat/no heat, I think) and with that would have been the counter with the stainless steel single-bowl sink across from it...

Yes, now, my mind is reeling with "What Memories!"... (What I was listening to back then, I am enthralled (BÖC that missed to in my Heavy Metal collecting stage) with as well...)

I found this little guy sitting on the side of the road a few years ago with a free sign on it. It is a fridge and freezer! It lives in our Family room, keeping the adult beverages cold. I'm not exactly sure of its age, but I would guess 70's if I had to..It was designed with a non adjustable thermostat, but seems to keep everything just right!

That turquoise Frigidaire brings back memories.
My parents had a nearly identical one in white, and my sister actually had a turquoise one for a short time.

1985 Kenmore Kitchen-Mate! Some of you may remember my post here on AW when I found her. It has been a pleasure to have!! This was Sears's Top of the line fridge in 1985! It was the last to have the Porcelain/Plus interior! It also features Moisture Miser, Crisper and Humidrawer,2 Handi-Bin's, and an Automatic Ice Maker! This is a Kenmore 20 series, at 19.6-cu.ft., with a freezer that is 13.72-cu.ft.

My model is white, and according to the 1985 catalog, retailed for $969.99, Plus the Barton Hickory wood panels, which were an extra $149.99. Which brings me to grand total of.....$1,119.98! In 1985, that was a lot of money! But I would have spent it on this unit! Definitely!
I did replace the upper panel with that piece of vintage wallpaper, that wallpaper was once hung here in my home, so I used it as a piece of remembrance, and I just loved the pattern! Now let me stop jabbering on so, and I'll post my pics! Enjoy!

Purchased new by my Grandmother in 1954. Gram, fridge came to live with us in 1963.
Still works great. Had to fix it once. Thermostat developed carbon short to ground, tripping the breaker. (I had installed a grounded cord previously). That was 20 years ago. She’s a great performer!

I love that little Sanyo side-by-side!  If I could find one of those I'd make a platform that would elevate it for easier access.  It would fit perfectly where my dead '57 Combo still sits, awaiting its thus far elusive revival.

I wonder if the Sanyo's temperature adjustment is made by turning a screw in some inconspicuous location.  That's how the adjustment was made on the globe shaped monitor tops, which were designed for use in rental units.

Here are pix of my '57 back at our previous house, taken during clean-up after it arrived home, and later after it had been moved into the laundry room to serve as our overflow/drinks fridge.

I have a '48 GE single door. A neighbor was relocating up north and was tossing it out. I snapped it up. It does run, but needs a new door gasket (which I have). I don't need its extra space right now so it's been siting in the storage area of the work shop for the last 10 years or so. Eventually I'll replace the gasket and get the door re-painted (it's got some staining on it). I love all the metal inside, though. Beats that plastic crap all to hell. And the thick insulated walls probably mean it's reasonably energy efficient.

Found some photos!

GE Artistry

I had repainted this (was black) for my kitchen remodel as a backup in case the Philco (posted above) restoration didn't work. As much as I want to keep it, I just don't have the room in my garage so it's going to the ReStore.

The kitchen has never been remodeled. My G.E model 15 was made the same year the house was new..and is a perfect fit for the space. Most of the other Monitor tops would be too tall for he space. As well as many modern refrigerators
